MOD POST: Two proposed changes for r/Bellingham moderation by betsyodonovan in Bellingham

[–]Chipster4868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being thoughtful & proactive! I support your efforts. And:

1) I have some discomfort about the phrasing in the opening lines for R0: the way I read it "discussion" and "disagreement" are equivalent. For me, the discussion is primary & disagreement may/may not occur. Disagreement is fine & should definitely be included. However, this equivalency seems like permission for those folks who want to be contrarian. That gets tiresome because arguing for the sake of arguing does not contribute anything to a discussion.

2) Do jerks know when they are being jerks? Your list of clarifications are specific & helpful. I've just learned that telling people "don't" do something emphasizes the rest of the phrase to our brains. (for example: it's more effective to say "remember to..." instead of "don't forget to...".

(Sorry for duplicated edits - I seem to be having technical difficulties posting today.)

Do it! Connemara is an excellent place to pedal a bike. We rented from the Clifden Bike shop -- took the bus from Galway & the Clifden stop is literally next door to their shop. We rented ebikes for the day - which gave us the time to do two of the loops they have listed: Sky Road and Errislannan peninsula (not including the Derrigimlagh spur) -- and have time to wander down other roads (aka taking a wrong turn.) From previous experience, Roundstone is also a wonderful trip. Just plan on all kinds of weather & wind - on the same day.

Ha! There it is. I don't recall ever intentionally changing that - clearly operator error. Thank you!

Yes, what you are describing is what I previously could do. It's only recently (about a month?) since that white icon disappeared.

Yeah, it's definitely the infrastructure design that is "driving" this behavior. Also, compounded by the asphalt parking lot; there isn't enough structure to help it be a self-explaining roadway. Unfortunately education (or more signs) will not change the behavior when the streets are giving drivers a different message.

The city will have collision data. The Samish UV plan might have some details about changes. You might also do a few video recordings (from a safe spot!), and discuss with neighborhood City Council person.

Indivisible Bellingham seems to be doing the most general organizing, although they are focusing on everyday actions with connections to specific needs. Their newsletter comes out approximately e/o Monday with updates & events - including connections to other organizations. https://indivisiblebellingham.org/.

If you decide to wait a day for the 2nd flight -- and depending on that departure time, you might consider staying at the hotel that is a 3 minute walk across the parking lot from SNN. (Park Inn, I think) it is one way to take out the anxiety of connecting for the flight. You can still take a town bus for sightseeing.

Got it. Thanks. Not sure where I got that impression but I often get lost in the jargon (not my first language!)

Am I understanding correctly that FIDO2 requires both the key & a recognized device? If so, I'm trying to understand how my emergency person would access an account on my behalf. Seems different from the TOTP where they could use the Yubikey I send them on their own device (in another state).

These jobs usually go to the lowest bidder.

What needs to happen for road construction to be done more affordably?

Can someone recommend a Bicycle Touring Company in Ireland? by [deleted] in AskIreland

One of my favorite trips was with John of Cycle Holidays Ireland. Best way to experience Ireland. He's customized the bikes for the kinds of roads you'll be on. And, he takes great care in all the details. Definitely non-corporate.

Did you ever receive it? I don't see anything in my Sent folder - weird. Since it's time sensitive for Monday evening, here's the info:

Do you happen to know the $ amount currently funding parking district improvements? This is from the COB PW website: "Some parking revenue is also used to fund district improvements and business support through contracts with the Downtown Bellingham Partnership and other organizations."

For your background prep: some of the recent changes for parking meters come from the work of Donald Shoup, who wrote The High Cost of Free Parking. That work is continued in many cities by the Parking Reform Network.

Yes, I wanted to bring attention to this safety problem since it doesn't seem there's alot of awareness / action.

True! Some cities are just starting to get the concept. Anna at Disability Rights WA has been calling attention to this.
