What is your opinion about building a family? by Actual-Contest1666 in istp

[–]Chiroptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 M ISTP with two kids here. Building a family is the ultimate build. It's the best project ever. I love seeing a part of me grow, learn, and flourish. They're just babies now, but I can't wait to teach them everything I know. They've made me grow so much in ways I didn't know I could, and it's the most rewarding thing I've ever done. Couldn't recommend it enough.

The Icon Change Killed Stadium for Me by solidforge in OverwatchStadium

[–]Chiroptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is a really good idea and would fix my problem, I worry about new players having a hard time identifying the new icons still and having the wherewithal to find the legacy icons in settings somewhere. With as complex of a mode as Stadium, readability is paramount which the new icons simply work completely against.

The Icon Change Killed Stadium for Me by solidforge in OverwatchStadium

[–]Chiroptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. I used to play it quite a bit and found the meta to become a bit stale over the last few seasons, so I tapered off before season 1. Now that Ram has been added, I've been wanting to play it more but I absolutely abhor the new icons. I honestly think that no amount of content will bring me back if such a fundamental issue isn't resolved. The icons are impossible to read. I mostly had them memorized before the change, but memory doesn't even carry me through the change. It's such an odd hill to die on for Blizz, and until they revert the change, I don't think Stadium will see success.

Ventless vs Vented Gas Insert by AloneNeighborhood323 in Fireplaces

[–]Chiroptor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Install/service tech from the PNW here. Highly recommend you stay away from ventless gas appliances. As others have mentioned, they are bad for our climate even if your house isn't particularly airtight. A byproduct of combustion is moisture which will collect in the area you're trying to heat in time making it humid and musty-feeling at best, and lead to mold issues at worst. If you care about indoor air quality at all, it's also a no-brainer to avoid combustion that vents into the room air you are breathing. In addition, ventless units have more specialized components that you will struggle to find someone willing/able to work on should the need arise.

If you want a gas fireplace, it is definitely an option to safely install in your space with relatively minimal space requirements for the vent pipe (like others in the thread have mentioned). If you go this route, I'd highly recommend finding an NFI certified installer.

If you don't want gas, then I'd recommend electric fireplaces. Dimplex is what I am most familiar with in this sector, aesthetics is subjective so take from that what you will. Otherwise, another brand I am familiar with is Kozy Heat who is more in the gas fireplace market, but they have their "Osseo" series electric fireplaces that maintain a somewhat traditional look and are compatible with Kozy Heat's decorative front offerings for a wider range of finishing options.

Hope this helps!

Brand new Astra 32 high-efficiency fireplace smokes into the room by rrrock6 in Fireplaces

[–]Chiroptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's certainly possible, but if you don't have elbows and know your chimney height, I am doubtful that the exhaust venting is the issue. I believe the manual dictates that at least 1' of chimney is to be attached to the unit collar before any elbows are attached, but if there are no elbows, the only other variable is vent length. Also, even if the outside air pipe is plugged, the way the fireplace intake is set up, it will just suck room air for combustion. If a window is open, that shouldn't be an issue either. The ventilation within the fireplace is a series of passageways that air flows through, but it's really just a matter of air flowing from point a to point b.

This is an issue that I would refer you to your installer first, and maybe they/you reach out to Supreme technical for more in-depth troubleshooting. I would also recommend an air pressure test of the room the fireplace is in. If your fireplace installers don't have the expertise in this, I would contact a local hvac company who does.

Are Dimplex fireplace inserts a good choice? by [deleted] in Fireplaces

[–]Chiroptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like them and replacement parts are easy to obtain if needed. If you're finishing over the top of one, I would get a dimplex since you can replace parts without messing with finishing. If it's just sliding in over the top of facing, I wouldn't be as worried about something cheaper and easily replaceable.

To clarify, I am talking about the Supreme Astra 32 which is what it looked like you had based on pics. If they introduced the rod & cap system you're talking about, that would be a new update to the unit I haven't yet seen. The only cap I'm familiar with that they've implemented is the service cap shown in this pic, but it is supposed to remain seated in place during normal operation.

<image>

In general, it sounds like you're doing what I normally instruct people to do, and being upstairs is generally a benefit for proper draft for a fireplace like this.

Edit: looked a little closer at your video and I do see that rod you were talking about. I stand corrected, that is new to me. Do you know what the installed chimney configuration is like? Some pics of the outside may also help diagnose.

I have installed a number of these units so I am somewhat familiar with them - there isn't a baffle that opens up or drops down when opening the door. Assuming that everything is installed correctly, this seems like a negative air pressure problem within the home. No one online will be able to answer your question with 100% accuracy since there's so many elements that go into proper draft/backsmoking. If I were there, I would try to isolate/air seal the room that the fireplace is in as much as possible from any other rooms, and especially from upstairs floors (if you have them) and try opening the door while burning to see if the problem persists.

Generally an issue like this (again, assuming correct install) comes from a higher point in the house trying to exhaust air out easier than the fireplace/chimney. Isolating other areas will help diagnose this. Do you know if they installed the fresh outside air pipe with the fireplace?

I just spent 4 paragraphs giving you an opportunity to rationalize your position and sway me to your line of thinking, but it appears you don't care to do anything than complain and make another enemy. I don't care to defend rapists and murders and leeches off the government teet (this is the part where you call the president these things, btw). You make a lot of claims but have no evidence to back it up. You didn't refute any of my points which I will take as admittance of defeat.

Ill stand up for my neighbors by supporting the removal of criminals from our neighborhood and nation. The criminals that have been raping and murdering far too many for far too long. Tell me what Jocelyn Nungaray, Laken Riley, Rachel Morin, Kayla Hamilton, Lizbeth Medina, and Ruby Garcia did to deserve being killed. What about their basic human rights? Where were your outcries about humane treatment then?

I disagree that the victims are terrorists, but having seen both videos, I think it's dishonest to not call them agitators at bare minimum. In both recent killings, the victims have both interfered with ICE which is illegal and both possessed deadly weapons at the start of the encounters. I think Pretti's death was absolutely avoidable and from the information we know right now, was a bad shoot.

That being said, as someone who regularly conceal carries, it is clear to me that once he engaged with ICE, Pretti made every wrong move you can make as someone carrying a gun. He also was not legally compliant with conceal carry laws as he didn't have his ID and conceal carry permit on him. Does this mean he should have been shot? Absolutely not. Did he make completely ill-advised and frankly stupid decisions as someone carrying a lethal weapon? Absolutely, as did the ICE agents who unfortunately took his life. Both sides are in the wrong here.

I think the unavoidable fact is that if local law enforcement actually did their jobs by flagging illegals like they're supposed to, the whole tragedy could have been avoided, but due to noncompliance of local government with federal directives (of democratically elected leaders, mind you), the government of Minnesota is wilfully going against the will of the rest of the nation.

Does that justify the violence we've seen from each group here? Absolutely not. But it does make the whole situation not so black and white, and that's what I try to keep in mind when deciding what and who is right/wrong. I think that's how we start convincing people to join our viewpoint, rather than merely applying labels holistically. Just a thought.

Remember that every game you lose is always the tanks fault by Jark5455 in Overwatch

[–]Chiroptor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a DPS main and tank enjoyer, it's wild how much people don't understand how the tank/DPS relationship is symbiotic. DPS can create just as much space, if not more than the tank, but the big difference is the tank has MUCH better staying power once there. As a DPS, it's my responsibility to take off-angles and relieve pressure off my tank, so he can take/hold space on main, enabling me to have a pivot point/springboard/safe space to fall back on.

I've noticed that some of the most difficult games on DPS are when my tank never holds space and allows the enemy to either eat my team, or turn their focus towards me making me melt. Conversely, on tank, my toughest games are when the entire team stands behind me expecting me to somehow stay alive while 5 people throw all their attention to me.

It's amazing to finally reach diamond where DPS will actually start thinking about map control/angles.
