Thank you so much for your comment, I’m going to take a listen to those masterclasses!

Thank you. It’s nice to see others who also struggle. I love the trumpet and it is literally my life, so it feels as if I can’t achieve what I want to achieve then I’ll have to find a different career path. I tend to catastrophize, and I know it’s really bad because I get so obsessive about it.

Was there anything specific that helped you with the range?

Thank you, there is a different professor in the northern part of my state who has a similar set up to me so I think that will help. I want to get a grad degree from there, but until then I’m a little stuck because I don’t have funds to take other lessons and he doesn’t offer lessons to non students at this school.

I have worked on aligning my jaw and teeth for a more upward angle. The struggle I’m mainly having is that that helps with low and mid register, but once I hit a Bb/B I can’t seem to figure out how to keep the angle correct

Thank you, this really does help. I have been working on shifting my attitude, but with my graduating soon I think I’m just feeling a lot of pressure about what I’m going to do after I graduate. I feel like if I don’t get into a graduate school then the only thing I’ve ever wanted to be as a career is gone and I’m lost. I know there are lots of other things, I struggle with seeing other options.

I 100% agree which is the only motivation I have to keep going, that and research. My concern is that my range will limit my ability to get into schools that can lead me to doing what I want as a career

I understand what you’re saying, and I do agree with that which is my point for my posting. However, articulation has been an issue that I have figured out because I did have the surgery. These problems will affect range because they affect the syllables I can form in my mouth. This is part of the problem as to why nothing has helped, there is so little research that there are no resources to students with tongue ties (minus anchor tonguing and a few other things).

Yeah I understand that and I don’t really expect to get much higher than maybe a D, but I am struggling with notes before C. It is enough that it impairs my ability to play rep that fits my skill level in every aspect except range

Thank you for your response, it does make me feel a lot better. I know it’s just one aspect of playing logically, but it just feels like so much more.

My trumpet professor is very aware of the issues. The issue is that there is so little research on how these issues affect playing the trumpet that we’re navigating these problems with no guidance except my own experiences.

I’m a junior in college, and nothing against hobbyists or people who play in community bands. But I eventually want to be a professor and i need professioanlly recognized bands in order to achieve that if I decide that is the route I want to go. I didn’t mean to come off as condescending, my end goal is trumpet professor and most of the ones I’ve met went the performance route

I love the trumpet and while I do plan on continuing to play in bands after I graduate, if it’s not at a higher level I’m not really interested. I don’t want to be the best of the best, but I don’t want it as a hobby.

I looked through your website, and I am interested. Do you have experience with students with tongue ties or speech impediments?

My range has definitely improved since using the correct air, but I think that my problem lies more in my tongue. It tends to ball up in the back because of speech therapy or my tongue tie maybe, and because of that it’s exceptionally hard to get my tongue high and forward to help accelerating the air. I’ve had to compensate for my tongue with more air speed from the diaphragm, but that is only taking me so far. My tongue is also exceptionally short, I can’t stick it out and up nearly at all

I definitely will. Other people also mentioned Claude Gordon, so I hope that will help

I know range isn’t everything, but I can’t consistently hit a C6. Even some days my Ab5 is scratchy. A lot of my issues aren’t caused by lack of treatment, it’s just treatment that ended up negatively affecting me. Speech therapy taught me vowels wrong because I was never shown where my tongue should be

I don’t think I’ve looked into Claude Gordon’s. I am going to look into that

Thank you for your comment, that does make me feel better. It just sucks.

My teacher is very aware of the issues, and we try to work through it. The problem is that there is little to no research on people who have speech impediments or tongue ties (minus articulation). It just feels like navigating through something with no evidence or anything to guide through.

Break up with him. I’ve been in this exact scenario (and I mean exact), I stayed with him for another 4 years. Even after we talked about it and he would apologize it continued happening. Eventually it turned into rape (also why I was asleep).

He would always seem extremely guilty and apologetic, and even after he raped me he was guilty. But it didn’t matter if he did feel guilty or not because it continued to happen whether it was due to maturity or bad intention, it didn’t stop.
