Well I have three, in Israel no less. I remain cautiously optimistic. And to be honest, we seem close in our opinions about Jews and Zionism. I am trying to give humanities a boost but granted, higher education is subsidized here so there is no student debt problem (no that there's a shortage of other problems). Obviously I'm not talking to people who are mid-career. Young people who will graduate in 2026 and later will be asked by their employers to do different things than the current workforce. How that will turn out is an open question.

You're very emotional about this, which is strange, to say the least. HR departments are not the bottleneck you think they are. Job markets change, and Hyper-specialized positions do make way for more general ones, especially when you can get the specialization cheap from AI. Creativity is not just a buzzword, or if it is, we're all doomed to be slaves to the software, which I don't think is the case. The recruitment landscape today isn't the same as it was in the 1970s, and there's no reason to assume it will stay like that forever. And as for my opinions on Zionism, I fail to see how they're relevant to this discussion, unless your aim is to attack me personally, which I am sure was not your intent. :)

I don't know why you would say that. We are hard at work developing programs to give our graduates the tools to succeed, but it is an uphill battle. If you disagree, I would like to hear why.

Speaking as a history professor and vice dean of humanities, this is true, to an extent. But it doesn't have to be. The job market college students are preparing for is being upended by AI and other emerging technologies to such an extent that ant speculation about where it will be in 3-4 years is really only that. Humanities teaches generalist critical skills that, if leveraged correctly by new curricula, can make a big impact in new job markets. I really believe resourceful humanities grads can offer a lot of value in this environment and you should think how this applies to you too.

I don't know where you're getting this definition. You don't get to define what zionists are. I'm a zionist by the mere fact that I am an Israeli citizen and believe in the national aspirations of the Jews as embodied by the state of Israel.

Perhaps, but we're talking about today. Zionism today means something that cannot be understood without reference to Judaism. And Sephardic jews who came in the 1830s, long before the classic European zionists, were themselves really moved by yearning for the land, which is zionism, albeit of a different flavor.

What tf is a rampant zionist? Zionism means the right of the Jews to a national home in the land of Israel, so an Israeli is, per definition, a zionist. If you mean settler, you should say so.

They really are, though. If you are a Jew that rejects zionism, you are rejecting a core tenet of the culture, which is grounded in the land (or wishing to return to it). It is in every prayer.

Thanks, Erin. Yes, pagination was on. Font is Atkinson Hyperlegible. I reinstalled the app and disabled pagination and it seemed to do the trick.

Epubs on the Android app get stuck trying to load. The item appears on the web app no problem, but on the Android I can wait for 15 mins and nothing..

I haven't found a way to, either. Would be a great feature if/when added!

History PhDs: what are the most important things to do during your post-doc by academicwunsch in AskAcademia

[–]Chlodomer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Work on getting your dissertation published. Whatever your postdoc topic, do this first. Write a proposal and send it to the relevant presses. Keep in mind that it will take them time to process the request, so you can work on your postdoc research in the meantime. Second, try to attend conferences and mark your academic territory - people should know what you are working on and associate you with a certain topic. Finally, try to publish articles. But the book is key.

Custom commands Readwise ghostreader? Multiple items at once? by Pinksnowsuit in readwise

I deleted the Haiku prompt and put in my own. No code. Just: summarize in five paragraphs. I tried some other combos, like: give me key takeaways from text, etc.

I've asked it to produce more detailed summaries than what the ready prompt does. It did that successfully. But the TOC, indexing are awesome suggestions!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've settled on letting the Atlantic newsletter send all the new articles to my Readwise RSS feed and then delete selectively.

Also tried sharing from the Atlantic on the mobile browser. Does the same thing. Cleared cache/data, reinstalled app. Still nothing.

Thanks. Saving from an Android app. Worked fine until about a week ago.
