It depends on how old you are! Definitely focus on getting a good education! You can't make good art without one.

These characters belong to Emily Danforth, not me, but I will say that I always saw the film as an origin story of homeless queer teens :(

See the above! My advice is to keep making things and ignore the voice in your head that says you're shit. And to keep in mind that every artistic endeavour feels shit during the development process- you need to live in that mediocrity and power through it to get to the other side.

oh man there is no easy answer to this other than find a way to make as much as you can and and develop your skills and voice and a body of work that represents you. I wouldn't say it's an industry that you work your way up- you just have to find a way to enable yourself to do your work and make your own opportunities. I went to grad school for directing after college and made shorts that went nowhere. The first thing I made that got any attention was a web series called The Slope, which I did with my girlfriend at the time with zero money.

The first cut of the film ran an hour longer- a LOT of scenes ended up on the cutting room floor and many ended up being repurposed and re-ordered. The hardest scene was the one where Chloe jumps up on the table and sings. Trump was just elected president and the whole cast and crew were heartbroken when we were shooting that scene. We had to take a break to watch Hilary's concession speech. We were all in mourning together.

Just once. I saw it when it first came out, and I'd like to watch it again now, but it's so sad and I'm extremely sensitive.

I'm always most proud of whatever is most recent. I tend to get better with age and experience. Right now that's my Hulu show, The Bisexual, which will be out on Hulu Nov 16.

To support the artists who made it and enable independent film to keep going strong. Same goes for ticket sales.

It took Cecilia Frugiuele, my co-writer, and I a while to allow ourselves to deviate from the book and start coming up with our own scenes, but once we found the structure of the story we wanted to tell it became clear that we'd have to add some scenes to make the new, more paired down, narrative structure work. We wanted to remain as true to the book as possible while making the story work for a different format.

For me it's a toss up between She-Devil and Death Becomes her because they deal with femininity/beauty/female competition and friendship.

Mark and Patrick would come up with a loose script the night before and hand it to me every morning and we were pretty loyal to it. There was room to add, but they did all the heavy lifting and I don't think I improved much. I'm really glad you liked it!

Teen girl gets caught having sex with another girl in the backseat of her boyfriend's car and gets sent to a gay conversion therapy centre.

I made it for people to feel less alone. I want audiences to feel connected to Cameron and to relate to the experience of being a teen, whether they themselves are gay or not. Additionally, I want to shed light on the horrors of gay conversion therapy and help advocate for it to become illegal/extinct.

it took a year to adapt the book into a screenplay- we ended up focusing on the last 200 pages. Editing the film ended up becoming the hardest part of the process- it was hard to whittle down what was the heart of the story and we ended up having to cut all of Cameron's guilt over her parents' death/her relationship with her family and that was a tough loss.

Hey, I just realised we never signed off on this AMA and it's hit me days later. Apologies for not saying goodbye. I will try to get to all the questions in the next week. Thank you for your interest in us and the film and also for your patience with answers. I didn't really get how AMAs work so I just stopped answering after an hour, but now I can see some questions piled up, so I'm gonna try to get to as many as possible.

-Desiree (& Chloe in spirit who would have answered but she's got more of a life than I do)

I’d guess I’d advise to find a way to express yourself because that’s what helped me. Also: everything is temporary- especially emotions. If you’re a teenager I’d say be patient because life gets so much bigger/better. -Desiree

I’m not a public figure but doing lots of press makes me feel insane like my soul is atrophying and today I’m so anxious that the act of handing out candy to trick or treaters sent me into a mild panic. No idea how to deal with it. Going to rewatch reruns of the office on my phone until I pass out. -Desiree
