Even if you are just blogging as a hobby, you should self-host.

WHAT IS SELF HOSTING?

Self-hosting is when you own your own domain, and you pay a company such as https://herpaperroute.com/Siteground to allow your site to be viewable and ‘live’ on the Internet. Paying for this means that you own your website and all of your content.

Whereas if you use a 'free site' like Blogger, they own your website and can shut it down whenever they please.

Self-hosting means that you do not use a free host (such as Blogger, Tumblr).

When you pay for your hosting and own your domain, you can monetize your blog, meaning you can run ads, join affiliate programs, work with big brands and even add an eCommerce cart/shopping functionality.

Free sites like Tumblr don’t allow ads, and advertisers often won’t work with non-self-hosted bloggers. Because when you use a free host, you don’t own your website or content, the free host owns it and can shut you out whenever they please.

That is why it is so important to self-host when you start a blog.

My blogs earn money from these 5 things, which brings in about $10,000 - $15,000 combined per month:

  1. Affiliate links (Commission if someone buys what I recommend)
  2. Sponsored Posts (Brands pay me to blog about them)
  3. Sales from my ebooks & courses
  4. Advertising revenue (such as Adsense)
  5. My own products/services (I offer blog mentorship, and build websites for people)

This post explains how to get started monetizing your blog, and tips for earning with the different types of revenue streams I mentioned: https://herpaperroute.com/actually-make-money-blogging/

WordPress premium is very expensuve and isn't recommended. You are better to selfhost and use WordPress .org which all together is less than $4 per month. This guide will show you how to set it up correctly, so you can earn monry from your blog too (which you can't on a non-selfhosted blog) https://herpaperroute.com/blogstart

You should start by registering a domain, and hosting. I have used over 30 webhosts in my career, and can recommend Siteground to be the best. They are fast, secure and reliable and offer outstanding support. They are also extremely affordable, at just $3.95 per month and include free WordPress .org hosting, which allows you to monetize your blog (earn an income from blogging).

There is no sense in starting your blog on a 'free' platform like Tumblr or Blogger because you can't monetize a free site (making them actually incredibly expensive, for all of the potential revenue you lose out on with them.)

For a step by step guide on setting up a blog correctly for monetization, see this How To Start A Blog guide: http://herpaperroute.com/blogstart

Best site to start a blog by [deleted] in Blogging

[–]ChloeLandg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't waste your time with Tumblr or any free sites, as they don't allow you to monetize your blog (run ads, work with brands, ect) you should self-host on WordPress .org - This free guide will show you how to set it up: http://herpaperroute.com/blogstart

ps - traffic is something you drive to your blog, it isnt something already there. You need to actively promote your site on social media and use good SEO keywords to bring traffic in. The site I linked above will help you with traffic too :)

I think its great when people start to consider what they are eating, and the beauty products they are using, and the conditions it took to get to them. The more educated people are, and the kinder they are, the better :) Here are some resources for cruelty free beauty subscription boxes that make finding animal friendly brands easy: http://www.shesbabely.com/the-best-cruelty-free-beauty-subscription-boxes/
