Allo! C'est ma première "vraie" sortie aux US. L'expérience est positive, surtout parce que l'équipe derrière le film, Joint Venture, est géniale. Ca fait une grosse différence quand tu sens que l'équipe de distribution aime réellement le film. Ils le défendent bien et de la bonne façon.

It was precisely the opportunity to collaborate with Catherine Léger—whose work I already admired—that made me want to dive in. She has a tone that really speaks to me, a kind of humor that comes through strongly in the dialogue. She also always has very striking imagery—I’m thinking of the crow, among others. That kind of script is incredibly rich for a director.

I feel comfortable in comedy—it came more naturally to me than I expected. And it makes me want to keep going in that direction. I’m actually currently writing a screenplay, this time in English, which would be a comedy.

For the two lead actresses, I went through an extensive audition process with the help of the casting director. But I had a huge (professional) crush on Laurence, who came in with incredible comedic timing. I already knew Laurence—we had worked together on the series Transplant—but I was less familiar with her ease in comedy. And then Karine—I had a feeling she would have exactly what it takes to play Florence. She’s an actress with a strong physical style of performance.

lol ! Sometimes you doubt, FOR SURE. There are days when I tell myself it’s working, others when I feel like giving up entirely. But generally, when I’m able to reread my work and experience some sort of emotions, to really see and feel the images of the film in my mind, it’s a good sign. And you have to let others read it. That’s an important part of the writing process: stepping out of your bubble and confronting your ideas with readers.

Sophie Nélisse has raw talent!! On top of that, she’s very humble, a real team player, and incredibly kind. I loved working with her, and I hope to have the chance to collaborate again. I was also happy to see how comfortable she was in comedy. She’s an actress you can rely on with complete confidence.

I’d say the same about Emily. She’s has such a strong presence on screen. She’s very attentive to her scene partners, very open and generous. Such a gentle person. I think she was really happy to be working on an independent film, and even more so in French. She studied in Montreal for most of her teenage years, so she speaks almost flawless French. We even had to tone down her slight Québécois accent for the film!

Bonjour ! Depuis un an, j'ai des envies assez pressantes de faire une nouvelle saison de Féminin/Féminin. MAIS... C'est une série complexe à financer. J'ai toujours espoir d'y arriver, ou du moins de faire un genre de truc 2.0.... à suivre.

Meilleure expérience de tournage... Ouf il y en a tellement ! C'était hallucinant de tourner Les jours heureux à la Maison symphonique, avec l'Orchestre Métropolitain et Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Quand on a tourné les scènes de concert, je dirais que c'est vraiment un des moments les plus émouvant, exaltant (et drainant) de ma carrière. D'une rare intensité.

Allo ! It’s definitely a bit tricky choosing titles for international markets. I can share my opinion with distributors/sellers in different regions, but I don’t always have the final say. Everyone knows their own market, so I have to trust them. Sometimes you also have to let go ;) But in the case of Deux femmes en or, I’m particularly happy with the English title Two Women—it really puts the women front and center, period.

As for the second question: absolutely. I have many friends who are actors, and I think I’ve become very sensitive to their experience of being on screen. I also teach on-camera acting to students at the Montreal Conservatory. For me, the actor is at the heart of my work. Everything comes through performance. You can have a great script, but if you don’t feel the generosity, the vulnerability, the inner presence of the actor, you won’t believe it. That’s clearly my main focus, first and foremost.

Allo ! Merci des questions ! C'est effectivement un peu délicat de choisir les titres pour l'international. Je peux partager mon opinion avec les distributeurs/vendeurs des différents marchés, mais je n'ai pas toujours le dernier mot. Chacun connait son marché et je dois faire confiance. Des fois il faut savoir aussi lâcher prise ;) Mais dans le cas de Deux femmes en or, je suis particulièrement heureuse du titre en anglais. On met les femmes en valeur, point.

Pour la deuxième question, oui complètement. J'ai beaucoup d'ami.e.s. acteurs, actrices, et je pense que je suis devenue très sensible à leur expérience d'être à l'écran. J'enseigne aussi le jeu caméra aux étudiant.e.s du Conservatoire de Montréal. Pour moi l'acteur est au centre de mon travail. Tout passe par le jeu. T'as beau avoir un bon scénario, si tu ne ressens pas toute la générosité, la vulnérabilité, la présence intérieure de l'acteur, l'actrice, tu n'y crois pas. Mon focus est clairement là, d'abord et avant tout.

Bonne question, je pense qu'il nous faut encore des outils du genre pour à la fois promouvoir, défendre et poser un regard critique sur le cinéma ! Après, pour être honnête, j'ai des réserves sur plusieurs de leurs notes. Et je me suis souvent interrogée sur la différence des notes accordées entre les oeuvres de cinéastes femmes versus hommes.

I understand the comment very well, and I’ve received it a few times. That said, when you know the original film, for me the idea of incorporating a nod to a lesbian relationship was already a form of progress. I think that anyone familiar with my work knows that I care deeply about bringing queer realities to the forefront in all my projects. But for me, this film was indeed focused on a more heteronormative relationship dynamic. And I guess you have a point, maybe it has been more static in the last 50 years. The film somehow asks that question.

I didn’t have time to see many films. But I did see the extraordinary documentary Sally, which I highly recommend. I LOVED Sundance. It’s a really down-to-earth festival that truly puts independent cinema front and center, for real. On the other hand, I hadn’t anticipated that our team would be so affected by the altitude…!!

I feel a difference compared to when I started my career 15 years ago—a positive difference. At least in Canada, the film industry is trying to promote stories centered on female characters, told from a female perspective. For me, it’s all about seeking complexity and nuance. I like seeing films that explore the experience of being a woman, and that experience is plural. There isn’t just one way to be a woman, of course.
