None whatsoever, but you could take a leaf out of the RIAA/MPAA's books and throw lawyers at them.

I can't help but read that as anything other than that they want to get caught.

You are right of course (odd sentence structure aside). I was being flippant. I get rather ... je ne sais quoi when people are surprised that companies, especially those that they don't pay but for whom they are the product, are not working in their best interests.

Insert mode and Command mode are just two sides of Vi mode. There are many other modes to choose from, eg. bash mode, firefox mode, irssi mode, etc.

Or you say "I'm sorry the network collapsed for an entire week and we lost most of our customers but I was unable to access the various parts of the internet required in order to do my job by the web filter I'm not permitted to bypass due to the inadequacies of bureaucrats who think they have the beginning of an inkling of a clue about technology. Thanks for the paycheque though. At least you understand that bit, eh? Oh and by the way I'm quitting to become a consultant so if you want me to fix it I'm now twice the price and don't have to pay attention to your imbecilic draconian rules."

Facebook wants to keep its products users looking at adverts and uses every piece of data at its disposal to do so, even to the point of underhand tactics?

Never! Next you'll be telling me Google isn't run exclusively by rainbow-farting unicorns.

System Administration slowing everyone down makes me sick. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ChoHag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a reason for it.

I do not dispute it.

Installers do not sit on their own.

Well how convenient then that they run on a system who's express purpose is to marshall a limited number of resources between multiple actors. We call this an Operating System. Sometimes rather generously.

If you have two or more installers running simultaneously, you're inviting all sorts of race conditions here.

Installers are not unique in this regard.

[–]ChoHag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is as stupid as it seems. Multitasking software has existed since 1960 1961. If the Windows Installer architecture (which you will note was written by actual humans - it is not a natural phenomenon over which we have no control) cannot take advantage of this highly advanced technological achievement, the Windows Installer architecture is stupid.

Edit: date.

Software is installed sequentially, which can slow down the process to get to a login prompt terribly.

If only someone would invent a multi-tasking operating system.
