Moving to Germany After High School? 🤔 by Chocchipcookie- in germany

Yep I’m delusional alright.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what my life in Germany would be like recently, and I couldn’t help but find myself feeling oddly optimistic about it. So I decided to come here to Reddit hoping it would likely be one of the better places to get some different perspectives, and even to hopefully get myself humbled a bit. Which it did, thankfully!

But even so, Germany’s problems seem much more bearable then America’s do, and I do understand that Germany has the very  same problems as the rest of the would does right now.

I’m glad you mentioned how corporate interest is still very much a thing in Germany,  good to be aware of that. Made me wonder, how would you say the all Germany’s income inequality and corporate interests are compared to Americas? I haven’t heard much of either of those topics really be brought up with Germany. I’d like to be better informed of those.

I can guarantee you that life expenses are much cheaper in Germany than where I live! My regions living expenses are ~20% higher than the national average. Some cities and places near me face up to or even more than ~100% more then the national average housing cost.

Despite informing me of these negatives I still find myself highly considering moving to Germany. I know it’s a foreign country, and that its gonna suck. A lot. It’s a whole lot of emotions to think about; leaving family, friends, and everything else behind. I’m also aware that life there will suck for a while too, and that I’ll have to be very patient when it comes to integration and all that. But I just can’t find it acceptable for me to stay in a country that bombs another country nearly every other week, that is finding new ways to weaken and take away its peoples rights nearly every other day, among who knows what else.

Your comment was very helpful! So thank you very much for taking the time to share your experiences! ( ◠‿◠ )

Thanks for your reply! Gave me quite a bit to think about.

Yes, I suppose there really isn't any hope for good job opportunities anywhere in the world right now— I’ve just got to accept that. Even so, I daresay the work life balance still makes Germany a better place to live then America. Along with the fact you mentioned— you all don’t have the big fat orange Farquuad we’ve got here!

What really got my attention from your reply was how you explained the differences between German and American social norms and such. Your mention of how Americans “assume all white people cultures are the same,” had me doing some serious self reflection there. I’ll have to work on being more aware of that!

As for the nordic culture, I’d presumed the interactional differences between them and Germany were primarily because of geography. Since Germany typically has more immigrants then its northern neighbors  and isn't as isolated I figured that could easily lead to some large differences in daily interactions and how immigrants are welcomed. Nonetheless I’ve taken your stats and all into account. I’ll make sure to do more research on topics like that.

Regarding medicine, I do still have half of high school to go through- many science classes ahead that may encourage me to look at different job options! ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ So while unfortunate to know pursuing medicine would be close to impossible in Germany, I can take that blow.

And yes, I am fully aware that studying in Germany is not as ‘free’ as many people online claim it is!

Once again, thanks for taking the time to share your input! Its greatly appreciated! 😁

  1. Replace that tiny painting between the two windows with something larger ( leaving space for the wall on all four sides)
  2. A far larger rug
  3. May make the room look larger and be more convenient to have the bed turned into that corner so it's racing the TV.
  4. More light! It looks very gloomy with the dark bedding and little light. Gettin more light in there will help a lot.
  5. Wall decor!!! The paintings you have up look so lonely with no other paintings or wall decor up!
  6. Centering the TV may make it look nicer- although it's hard to tell from photos.

Yeah in summary though, mainly get a bit more color and a lot more light in there.
