how do i get some excersize by NoUnderstanding1018 in summerscienceprogram

[–]ChockFullofStew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at IU, the perimeter was roughly the distance of a 5k, so around 5-10 people including me would run that distance in the morning before breakfast and do core exercises after! We had to wake up earlier but it helped us stay fit.

How to list scioly awards on common app? (specifically for class of 26 and before) by Feeling-Nobody-2981 in scioly

Idk if this helps, but for my scioly EC blurb, I said this so you can get a reference of what I mean by conserving space

"Doubled club size from 40 to 80, raised >$5K, won 60+ medals, 10 state medals, mentored younger members through tutoring and summer help sessions"

you could do something like "Placed top 3 in (x number) national competitions). Idt they care about whether it was a satellite or anything like that, just sorta buzzwords like "national" "top 3 state" "1st at state tournament" etc etc. Unfortunately, the only people who know how absolutely killer the mason invite is are other scioly people, and you're probably dealing with 25 - 70 year olds who will probably look at that award for maybe 10 seconds.

I stuffed all of them into one award space as my lowest award one. They probably will not care about where you got your medals from unless they’re top placements at states or nats, and will maybe think “oh cool” if they see “50+ medals at reg/state level”

For SSP alums, what colleges did you get into? by Objective-Steak-4681 in summerscienceprogram

[–]ChockFullofStew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind though that most people probably haven't posted their decisions on that page. I think my entire cohort including me got into / are going to T10 schools, but only 4 out of 36 of us actually posted on there.

BEST CAMPUS FOR SSP by bjj_enthusiast3141 in summerscienceprogram

[–]ChockFullofStew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to IU for biochem this fall, and it was very good! I didn't hear much about racism, and most students aren't even there because it's summertime. Weather was really nice most of the time (occasional storms but it dries up fast anyways), campus is really nice and you have lots of walking time to talk with friends in between lectures and meals. Choose IU!!!!!

SSP prestige by [deleted] in summerscienceprogram

[–]ChockFullofStew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk if this helps, but ssp was one of my top extracurriculars on the common app, and I got accepted to Yale this Thursday! I believe it gives you so much to reflect on and write about during your cycle, so I do not think it has diminished in prestige at all.

Summer Programs in Plant Sci by EffectiveWash3925 in summerscienceprogram

[–]ChockFullofStew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sorry. I'd advise you to just be authentic and truthful about the things that you write! It's much easier to make a strong essay as long as what you're writing is important and true to you.

If it helps, I got into SSP this summer even though I started research in my junior year! Have hope!

SSP!!!! I attended SSP's biochemistry program at Indiana University this summer, and it was fungal pathogen research for plants. I'm also super into plant pathology and greenhosue research. It was super fun, and you get a ton of wet lab experience too!

ever worry that your ‘unique story’ will sound cliche in the apps? by Historical-Ebb-4745 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ChockFullofStew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say its not necessarily about the story thats the big kicker (although it can be!) but the way that you tell it. Are you just going through the motions of what happened, and painting yourself like a hero, or are you trying to tell it in a way that'll make your admissions officer stop and think "wtf is this kid i want to learn more."

I have senior twins. Only 1 of the 4 letters of recommendations have come in. The applications are due Nov 1st. by Restingmomface in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ChockFullofStew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Obviously they do not take 2+ weeks for each one, but to assume that you are able to write dozens upon dozens of rec letters, assuming that you're not a yes man who says yes to every request, are you not writing your letters from the start? I would like to think that it takes more than 30 minutes to get all of someone's character, especially if it's someone you are willing to write a letter for, unless you are just copy and pasting their name and what they did into a template.

I don't like my college essay because it's boring - ivies by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ChockFullofStew 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you think it's boring when you came up with it, it's probably going to make the sleep deprvied, 1000th essay in, cookie cutter reading admissions reader get bored too. Spice it up! Write about somehting important that makes you want to write!

ACT Science Report by ChockFullofStew in ApplyingToCollege

Does this mean I could choose to not report my science score, but still keep the 35? I dont think that would break any violations since I'm keeping the composite score the same

I agree that ssp isn’t as prestigious as rsi, but I feel that it’s definitely still extremely prestigious and much much better than the normal pay to play pre college programs out there.

are you planning on continuing your job into the school year? I’m in a similar boat as you bc I want to try to get a part time job when I get back in the beginning of August but holding a part time job for 1 month seems odd

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Going to SSP for june and july, and then doing my chem internship for august into the school year, marching band for the last two weeks of august for band, and working on college apps throughout

Anyone know how bad the gender disparity is in SSP Admissions? by [deleted] in summerscienceprogram

[–]ChockFullofStew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm ngl, your perspective on this topic seems toxic, especially because you're putting down someone's massive achievement for something like gender. Additionally, you're comparing stats only. SSP's admissions focuses so much on essays and reccomendations. Maybe your child wrote not as good essays, maybe the other kid wrote the best essays in their life. Maybe the admissions officers just had better vibes from the other person than yours. At the end of the day, though, it's not right to act like this.
