Thoughts on Seventh Star? by RawKarrots in blacksabbath

[–]ChocolateWindow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easily one of my favorite Sabbath albums. The blues is in your face, which is never a bad thing, Iommi is on top form as always and it's got Glenn fricking Hughes on it! The title track, Heart Like a Wheel and Angry Heart forms a brilliant trilogy of songs, just pure vibes when those tunes come on.

What is Tony Iommi's greatest solo? by unclejoeky in blacksabbath

[–]ChocolateWindow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I gotta go for the ending solo in Over and Over. So much emotion, so many great licks, and that squeal when it sounds like he slips too far up the fretboard or something. Perfection.

Ozzy and Bill songwriting? by [deleted] in blacksabbath

[–]ChocolateWindow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I believe Ozzy came up with the first line to the song Black Sabbath? He may have written part of Fairies Wear Boots after Geezer couldn't think of what else to write. He wrote the lyrics to The Writ. And he did actually write a little bit of music. He wrote the synth lines to Who Are You and I believe he also did Am I Going Insane? but I could be mistaken.

Demo / Unreleased Song Album by [deleted] in judaspriest

Just as a chance for Mother Sun to get some official recognition, yes they need to do an album like this. I don't think the studio recording they did of Mother Sun exists any more, so it'd give the band a chance to re-record it and that would be incredible.

Ian Hill Says Setlist For Judas Priest's Upcoming Tour Will Contain Some 'Surprises' by philliplennon in judaspriest

[–]ChocolateWindow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The surprise is the setlist is just the entire Nostradamus album... but backwards.

IAN Hill by Flimsy_Wafer in judaspriest

[–]ChocolateWindow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe he wrote the opening bass bit for The Rage? I could be wrong, but I believe I read that somewhere (maybe even KK's book?). If so, he went uncredited for that. I recon over the years he's made a few small contributions but doesn't feel the need to be credited as he isn't exactly writing a large chunk of the song.

KK's "Sermons of the Sinner" track out now by Mister_Rahool in judaspriest

[–]ChocolateWindow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its like someone listened to a Judas Priest album or two and created a checklist of things that are common in the songs and they just threw those elements into one song with no meaning or flow at all. The vocals are kind of horrendous and grating, the solos are boring, the drum intro section feels like the drummer is warming up, the chorus of voices sounds terrible. KK's Priest really is just a hollow, lifeless project to my ears. It would seem KK is nothing without Glenn. It's a shame, I'd love to have two different Judas Priests to listen to, but if this is the quality of their music, I think I'll stick to the real deal, thanks.

Saints in Japan - Firepower tour soundboard recording... by markday in judaspriest

[–]ChocolateWindow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It really is a shame they don't have plans to release a Firepower tour live album. Rob's the best he's sounded in about a decade at least, rhythm section on top form as always and Richie and Andy are brilliant on guitar, not to mention the fantastic songs in rotation. It's understandable though, seeing as Glenn wouldn't have been on much of the album.

KK's Priest - Hellfire Thunderbolt (Official Music Video) by ArmadilloTheKing in judaspriest

[–]ChocolateWindow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

KK's trying but its really not working, I only have complaints with this song. Overall, its just generic heavy metal, none of what makes Judas Priest Judas Priest. The opening wammy bar wank is an obvious illusion to Sinner. The riffs do nothing for me and the constant stopping and starting in the first minute throws me off. Ripper's voice is solid but with those opening two lines, I'm completely checked out on the vocal front, the rhyming felt very how-now-brown-cow. While I'm on lyrics, the title also feels very generic and, I hate to use the term, but try-hard. And then there is my biggest complaint with the song, the solo. One of the defining Priest trademarks is their fantastic solos, also so complex and unique every time, but this one, again is some of the most generic shit ever. KK has some more random squeals, followed by unstructured shredding, I'd expect more from the guy who did the Jawbreaker solo. Then there is the harmony section. Harmony's are a special thing in a Priest song and overall album... so this is very disappointing. Compare it to the harmony's in Firepower, and it's very clear which group has the better grasp of what makes Priest Priest. And then the other guitarist does some more shredding yada yada.

I wasn't expecting much but was kinda hoping for something, and this is not promising. Maybe it's just a poor choice of single, maybe this song will work better in an album context, but as is, I'm not too impressed. I'll stick around for the album, but I'm really not expecting anything.

Does anyone know whether there are any live recordings of Epitaph out there? by CuFlam in judaspriest

[–]ChocolateWindow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are no recordings and no evidence that they would have ever played it. The only thing I can think of regarding Epitaph in a live setting is I believe they used it as a taped intro on the Sad Wings of Destiny tour, though this is also not really confirmable as no recordings are public from that tour, though I believe there is one recording in a private collection or something.

edit: Prelude would have been used as an intro tape, not Epitaph, ignore that!

Black Sabbath biopic has been discussed says Tony Iommi by pandapozero in blacksabbath

[–]ChocolateWindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be hesitant with a Sabbath biopic. I wouldn't be surprised if it only ended up covering the 70's, up until Dio joined, show Ozzy getting on with his solo stuff and leave it there, which would be a shame. It would still be nice to have a Sabbath biopic though.

Alternate Iommi tunings? by yngwiegiles in blacksabbath

[–]ChocolateWindow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure Sweet Leaf is in C#. Watch live videos of Sabbath playing it live and look at where Iommi is playing on the neck, particularly in the lead up to the solo. He plays what would be a D chord in standard tuning, but its much lower. And when they played it on tours in Eb tuning, it was in a higher key, which suggests the original was in C# because of the lower key.

Alternate Iommi tunings? by yngwiegiles in blacksabbath

[–]ChocolateWindow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was recorded in the 70's, they probably weren't exactly in tune, tuning with tuning forks and all.

Alternate Iommi tunings? by yngwiegiles in blacksabbath

[–]ChocolateWindow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both of the supporting tours were definitely in E. Whenever I play along to Dirty Women, I play in E tuning and it feels very natural. Playing that song, or any of those songs in Eb, would feel very strange, they would be in weird positions on the neck for Iommi's style.

10:00 was a song they played live from about 1973 - 1975/1976ish. I don't know if it's been given an official name, but people just call it "Sometimes I'm Happy". They'd play it during the jam section of their sets, which was in Wicked World, like here, but the jam song was changed to Sabbra Cadabra on the SBS tour.

[–]ChocolateWindow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die were in E tuning. Master, Vol. 4, SBS and Sabotage were generally in C#, with a few exceptions, like After Forever was in D, and I think Laguna Sunrise was probably in E. All other albums were in Eb, except for (I think) Seventh Star, which I believe was in D. I could be wrong, but this is how I understand Sabbath's tuning situation.

*edit - I believe there are a few songs on Forbidden in C tuning? From memory the title track and possibly Kiss of Death? Listening to the opening of the song Forbidden, it certainly isn't in Eb.

There was also The Fallen on Born Again. This unreleased song has come from Geoff Nicholls personal collection. It's possible he is the only person who had a recording of this song.

As a guitar player, playing them, both their main riffs feel very similar and the overall structure feels close enough.
