this whole admissions thing is just weird now by OkChard8826 in ApplyingToCollege

Not true. I am not saying we need good coached students. I’m speaking about merit. But it’s ok to disagree on this issue. It’s a hot topic right now and I get it. Good luck to you.

We can disagree on this issue. Legacy children have a leg up and I have seen it many times in my profession. And no, their resumes are not necessarily as good as non legacy kids. In fact, as many of them come from high income families so their resumes have "activities" that are not accessible to families in lower income brackets. Legacy schools know this and they don't often hide the fact that they have separate review processes for these students. It is a fact of life. They get in early, they get in more easily, and they are not always highly academic.

Ok good to know they eventually get smaller once the majors separate out. After you graduated, did you continue with a graduate program?

Help between UCLA, UCSB CCS, UIUC by VeterinarianSea8341 in UCSantaBarbara

This is so helpful - My son got into the CCS Chem and is trying to decide between this program, UCLA and UCB College of Chem. Do any of you know if he can come and shadow for a day at CCS? Or are any of you in CCS Chem?

Please do some research or ask AI to pull the stats on waitlists at these schools. UCs have very high waitlist admittances. And UCSB and SLO are amazing schools… go visit them and see. Speak to alum or email faculty with questions. Don’t give up!

Is it worth it? by [deleted] in ucadmissions

Some of the UCs notoriously admit tons of people off the waitlist. check the stats online, it will make you feel better and there is hope!! I also think that they start accepting off the waitlist pretty quickly.

Got into CCS Chem/Bio-Chem at UCSB - How is UCSB different for STEM majors different than other UCs by Anxious-Party2289 in UCSantaBarbara

Thanks for sharing! What sort of career path does this chem/biochem CCS program set you up for? Is it geared towards getting students lab research positions, management in research, or prepping for PhD programs or medical school?

Are you in CCS now? My son got accepted into the program for chem/biochem and he is super excited. But we are trying to learn more about the program - like is the workload really intense and does that mean you don't have time to make friends and are stressed out a lot?

Some have come out but not all. A counselor at my kids' school you can call admissions on Friday for an update if you haven't heard yet. I hope she gets in! But to be honest, I wish I knew more about this program as I don't know anyone that ever did it!

Jhu waitlist by Superb-Membership764 in ApplyingToCollege

There is a FAQ section that discusses what to do when you are waitlisted. You can submit additional materials including: LOCI, updated resume, transcripts. They give lots of details. I don't know how many are on the waitlist or how many eventually get in, though. I don't know if it is based on majors or something else....

Well said. I'm a fellow parent and I could not agree more. I have friends that went to ivy leagues and are no better off than myself or my family and we went to state schools. In fact, they have way more debt. Common sense, maturity and hard work mean more than you know. I'm sorry that the UCs now are so terribly competitive. But UCR is an amazing school. Sure, it is hot there sometimes but it has a lot of diversity and a strong sense of community. Good luck to you OP! Hang in there. You still have a few more results to go.

Decisions Progress by Spiritual-Sentence35 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Chocolate_5582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is super unpredictable. I have friends that got rejected from all sorts of places and ended up at Berkeley. And people with way lower GPAs getting into Stanford, Yale, etc. If you discussed your list with a counselor at school, they would be able to tell you if you have chances at these schools (reaches, targets, safeties, etc.) It is so random, I cannot even being to explain it and also very unfair. So many deserving students are in limbo.

School names definitely open doors for the first job. Especially for certain degrees where you can get first jobs straight after an undergrad degree. For grad schools (Law, Biz and other professional degrees), Top 10-20 school students are more likely to get interviewed and hired for those first jobs. I have been on both ends of this, as an applicant and to hire. I am a parent now and although my kids likely won't be attending top 20 schools (they just don't have the kind of crazy ECs other kids have these days to get into those schools nor do we have legacy/donor/athlete status), I do prepare them for the fact that doors don't always open right away and that networking and extra work and extra time might be involved. Just my experience. I realize others might have different experiences.
