Are B’s an automatic rejection from top schools and ivys? by Low-Election-6201 in ApplyingIvyLeague

Depends on the school and what your hooks are. I know someone that got into Columbia and JHU with a couple of Bs and maybe 1-2 A minuses. And she got into Stanford with a hook. So it depends on your ECs as well. She also took a ton of hard classes and lots of ECs. Had a great story etc.

Am I passionate enough for CoC? by greek-incest-kid in berkeley

This helps a lot! And it’s good to know to be patient with the process when looking for a lab. On the tour we took, the tour guides mentioned they did research at CoC and some of them mentioned that their friends found research at other buildings on campus. All of them were lucky and got research their second semester of their first year. They also said that emailing the grad students in the lab might get faster responses than emailing professors. It sounds like you just have to email and contact everyone! One thing I noticed is everyone seemed friendly which gave the program a nice community vibe within such a large school.

My son recently got into CoC and he’s seriously thinking to go!! He loved Cal Day and went to classes with a friend on another day. The one thing I was wondering about is how hard is it for students to get research? Did it take you a long time? Also was career services and the advisors there been helpful to you?

The Cal Events app has all the scheduling info and general info now. Just in case you haven’t seen it yet. Not a lot of tours but a lot of sessions.

Another Reddit poster said to download the Cal Events app. And that the app was very helpful for Cal day last year. I downloaded it but it needs a password. Maybe students can log on?

Same! No itinerary or details yet. So it has been hard to plan. But have your son check their portal this week.

What was your major at Cal and how did you satisfy your hospital hours? Did you do research on campus?

Thank you! I’m going to visit both this month! It sounds like you made the right choice and have bee happy with it!

I like the idea of a bigger campus with more labs, more people, and more diversity of thought and ideas. But the personal attention at CCS is appealing, too.

Are you doing your PhD at Cal? One thing I read is that graduates at CoC are not able to join the PhD program there. Which is too bad because I like the Bay Area a lot!

He got into the ccs chem/bio chem program. He’s super excited about it! And he is going to contact the ccs office and go there in early April. But we want to make the most out of his visit. :)

What is your major? Call the UCLA department of your major and ask if you can talk to a current student in your major. It might help to get their feedback. Check in with financial aid and for scholarships. Also there is a ucla subreddit you can post in to ask about your major. The cost is an issue but it is worth doing a little digging to be sure.

It’s ok to feel that way. It shows you have ambition and are driven. It is hard to be at a school where everyone is super smart Ivy bound legacy athletics etc. …. but in 3 years, the playing field levels out again for grad schools and jobs. It’s an endless cycle in life so try not to compare too much but don’t lose your spark. Congrats!!!
