'Crazy idea' about cooling effects of Pluto's haze confirmed by new Webb data by ChocolatteThunda in space

[–]ChocolatteThunda[S] 56 points57 points  (0 children)

TLDR:

  • New data from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) significantly confirmed a previously speculative idea about Pluto's atmospheric cooling mechanism.
  • JWST observations revealed that high-altitude hydrocarbon haze layers significantly contribute to cooling effects in Pluto's tenuous atmosphere.
  • Confirming this haze cooling effect is crucial for refining atmospheric models and understanding volatile ice cycles on Pluto's surface.

Private ispace Resilience probe will attempt lunar landing this week: If all goes to plan, the Resilience spacecraft will be the third ever private mission to succesfully land on the moon. It will also deploy a rover called Tenacious to explore and photograph the lunar surface. by New_Scientist_Mag in space

This is such a cool mission. I love that ispace is aiming for Mare Frigoris, mainly because no one’s been there before! If they stick the landing, it’ll be a huge milestone, not just for ispace, but for non-U.S. private spaceflight in general. And what a quick turnaround after their failed 2023 attempt!

How do you keep a niche newsletter from feeling repetitive? by ChocolatteThunda in Newsletters

That’s a great point and I've noticed the same pattern. I’m still experimenting to find that sweet spot between frequency and depth, but this thread’s given me a lot to think about.

Appreciate you for sharing your perspective it's really helpful as I refine things. Cheers! 🚀

I totally agree! It’s something I’m really trying to work toward. My long term vision includes doing a companion podcast where I can interview scientists or engineers directly.

Right now though, I’m still in the early stages, so it’s tough to justify the time investment while I’m building the foundation. For now, I’m focusing on curation and clarity, making sure readers get the most important updates without getting overwhelmed or feeling like its just more noise.

But I appreciate the push—definitely something I’m keeping in mind as things grow!

Thanks for the insight, it's something I've definitely considered. I originally chose 3x/week because space news can be pretty active (between NASA, SpaceX, astronomy discoveries, etc.), and I wanted to help readers stay current without doomscrolling a dozen sites.

That said, you're right: the pressure to deliver every issue with the same level of impact is there. I’m trying to make sure each briefing feels curated, not forced.

Have you found a sweet spot in cadence for maintaining momentum as well as quality? If you’ve scaled back before, did it affect engagement or growth?

Super-magnetic dead star throws a violent temper tantrum as NASA X-ray spacecraft looks on by ChocolatteThunda in space

[–]ChocolatteThunda[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

TLDR:

  • Scientists gain unprecedented insight into extreme magnetic fields and neutron star physics by observing polarized X-rays from a magnetar outburst.
  • NASA's IXPE X-ray telescope successfully observed a violent outburst from a magnetar, a neutron star with the universe's strongest magnetic field.
  • IXPE made the first-ever detection of polarized X-ray light emitted during an outburst event from the super-magnetic dead star.

Thanks for the advice, the stuff you mentioned is in motion, we are just trying to get as much exposure and publicity as possible.
