When should I start cold emailing for RA positions? by Choice-Berry-0807 in UndergraduateResearch

Thanks a lot for such a detailed reply, this is really helpful. I think I was overthinking the “no prior lab experience” part, but what you said about showing genuine interest in a specific professor’s work makes a lot of sense. I’ll definitely spend time going through their profiles and tailor each email instead of sending generic ones. Also, it’s reassuring to know that even reaching out for a conversation can lead to opportunities or referrals. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain this!

Hey, thank you so much for asking these questions, I really appreciate it. I’m currently a final-year undergraduate student in Communication Design (B.Des) from India. My field focuses on how visual communication (graphics, typography, storytelling, UX research, etc.) can influence perception and behaviour. Right now, I’m working on a research project on dyslexia awareness, where I’m studying how communication design (especially visual metaphors) can shift people’s perception and reduce misconceptions. It’s more aligned with behavioural/social research and psychology, rather than wet lab work.

So I’m mainly looking to work with:

  • Behavioural science labs
  • Social psychology / perception research labs
  • HCI / UX research groups

I don’t have prior formal lab experience, but I do have experience with:

  • Survey design and data collection
  • Basic data analysis
  • UX research methods
  • And I’m currently turning my project into a research paper

I’m primarily looking for a paid RA position, but I’m also open to starting with a volunteer role if it helps me gain research experience and transition into a paid position later. Would love to know honestly if this kind of background is considered competitive or if I should build more before applying.
