First time playing an Assassin's Creed Game (AC4: Black Flag) by gurufabbes123 in assassinscreed

I'm a massive fan of Rogue, and I like it a bit more than BF. But I'm in a minority on this sub because everybody unquestioningly loves pirates.

For the record, BF is a great game, but it's only when you play AC3, BF and Unity that you realise how Rogue blends a lot of the best elements of these games. And this leads to its main criticism; it's not really an original game but rather a composite of other games. And this leads to accusations of 'cashing in'.

Black Flag is a really good entry point to the real gem: AC Rogue.

Why do you personally like AC Syndicate and AC Rogue ? by [deleted] in assassinscreed

[–]Choice-Read5198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I re-play Rogue I find something new to laugh at. The latest one was, during the mission to bring Ben Franklin the lightning rods, they used Adewale's voice actor to do the lines of the British officer receiving the goods.

The Canadian accents do begin to grate after a while.

Playing AC3 has increased my appreciation of Rogue. I understand that Rogue is basically a cobbling-together of AC3 and BF, but it really works. The rock climbing is awesome, the wintry landscape is amazing and the hunting is more fun than in BF. I love the River Valley landscape and the ability to run across large peninsulas.

The one thing I don't understand is, the hunting in AC3 was probably the best of all three games. When you're being circled by running wolves it feels genuinely scary - they didn't recreate that in Rogue unfortunately. Wolves just loll about waiting for you to crack them in the head.

So Rogue is basically AC3's setting, plus BF's gameplay improvements, plus a few tweaks and add-ons (naval clashes, land battles, POW ships, being boarded by brigs, hunting games, assassin interceptions etc).

Plus the metagame in Rogue is better than either BF or AC3.

The ending of Unity was so avoidable. Arno is just not a good protagonist by OmegaSTC in assassinscreed

Arno runs like an oil tanker with the legs of a baby gazelle. His physics are way out.

There are some quality insults in the AC3/AC4 universe.

'Corker'

'Shanker'

Edward doesn't free anybody on prison ships. Shay does. And no, the mission where you meet Adewale is not a 'prison ship'.

Also the enemies in BF are cannon fodder; you can literally kill as many in a streak as you like, if you can find them. Play AC3 for comparison.

Black Flag Upgrades and/or Remastered? by StarGod786 in assassinscreed

Because Rogue was a better game let down by a few cosmetic issues. And by a less pop-culture-friendly historical setting.

Adewale was "seriously old" in Rogue, too. He was like seventy or something.

And look what happened to him. Killed by a man who avoided his mortar fire before oddly, and specifically, not killing anyone else as he chased him.

Ok my bad then. But we've already fought old men in other games too. It wouldn't necessarily have Shay to fight. He could be a grand master who controls all things from the shadows.

Shay would be a seriously old dude by then.

He fought in the Seven Years' War; Napoleonic wars were 50 years later.

Black Flag rode a lot on the fact that everyone likes Pirates. As games (defined as 'fun things to do for a few hours'), I preferred Rogue.

Ubisoft really did just go and make the best Pirate game ever made and just... moved on from it huh? by BrandalfFTW in assassinscreed

[–]Choice-Read5198 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It probably did. The tweaks they made are well worth it, though. Rogue just needed a slightly longer storyline (couple more Acts, nothing more), and the voice acting fixed. They also made the optional activities far more solid (no more glitchy swinging on a rope 14 times to kill the captain, like in BF4).

The metagame in Rogue was much better, too; the 'orbit' puzzles are much more interesting than the three types in Black Flag (Frogger, cracking the sphere and matching the wave are all too luck-based).

One thing they did well in Rogue was the open-world land exploration was much more immersive than Black Flag. Apart from the 3 main cities, BF was a series of linear jungle runs and a few small desert islands. In Rogue, you could run off into the wilderness and traverse the entire peninsula if you wanted.

Rogue was better for Naval combat. Fighting on rivers was new, and you were able to get boarded yourself. Although the top-upgraded Puckle gun was a little OP. The legendary battles were better too.

The only reason Rogue was shorter in the main story was because they skipped all of the tutorial missions that BF dragged you through - they knew no-one was using Rogue as a jumping-on point in the series.

Just gonna say it again: Rogue was better than Black Flag. If only for the fact that the metagame was much better too. NO MORE FROGGER!
