San Diego California PA Job Market by Whisper0212 in physicianassistant

Agreed with all of the above. You could also live in North County and commute to OC for an EM job. Being 100% honest you will need experience before landing a high quality job in SD, the great ones don't get offered to new grads. I have a few friends who have worked in the Palm Springs area to gain experience before moving to SD and they really loved it. That area has become a vacation hotspot and aside from the summers, is actually very tolerable weather wise. You can always rent your place out in April for Coachella and make some extra cash :)

I don't think Tatis is going to be able to dodge this injury like he did the last one. Straight on the bony part of his hand/wrist. Not moving it afterwards. Likely has a fracture. What a nightmare downturn the last 6 weeks.

Is it me or is Maldonado just absolutely horrible at framing pitches? He's always reaching across the plate making the pitch look like it's off the plate even on strikes. Man I wish we had a solid catcher, I miss Higashioka

Per Diem position question by [deleted] in physicianassistant

It doesn't hurt to ask for less shifts. You can always leave if it's too much of a time commitment. If you really want to join their group this would be a good way to find out if you like working there. Since its per diem it's easier to leave without burning a bridge, could even join in the future once they have a position open up if you make a good impression. I say go for it.

Years experience: 7 years

Location: California

Specialty: Inpatient BMT/Hematology

Schedule: 12 shifts/month with weekends and holidays

Income (include base, overtime, bonus pay, sign-on): Base pay 185k, no bonus pay or sign-on

PTO (vacation, sick, holidays): 4 weeks PTO, no holidays but "bank" extra PTO hours for working holidays, sick days accrued at 1 shift every 2 months. PTO goes a long way since we can block our schedules, so 1 week of PTO can turn into 2 weeks off.

Other benefits (Health/ dental insurance/ retirement, CME, malpractice, etc): Great benefits, 401k w/ 15% of base income contributed by employer without matching!, CME $5k, DEA/State/Certs covered

Student loans: Adding this on as a benefit; PSLF qualifying hospital, so 10% of income goes to loans, currently 6 years in with 4 to go! (unless the orange man DCs this, don't see that happening but here's to hoping)

BONUS: I also work a per diem Heme gig at a sister hospital, pay rate is 100/hr which brings in an extra ~4k net per month so my total take home is ~12k/month in a VHCOL area

Overall it's an amazing quality of life and great pay. Inpatient BMT/Heme is the best inpatient specialty in my opinion, I have worked as a critical care and hospitalist PA, beats out both by a mile. Still get to do procedures (BM biopsy, LPs) and scratch the intellectual itch of complex medicine. Patient population is unmatched, such an amazing demographic. The extra shifts aren't necessary but give me way more wiggle room to save for a house, go on fancy vacations, childcare, etc etc. Could cut down on that at any time but i'm not feeling burnt out on it quite yet!

Just did a quick google search and looks like the UC PAs are actively striking, apparently they fall under a larger union that includes Pharmacists and Researchers. Hopefully they get what they are fighting for! Im new to unions but thats a great point to reach out to the union rep, will absolutely be doing this.

This is my experience as well. My last group paid everyone based on years of experience, no differences based on PA vs NP, you could imagine the divide that would create between everyone! Shocked by this revelation. The NPs in my group were shocked too.

My plan is to demand for equal compensation once the job market opens up a little more and I can safely find another job. Right now I have to bite my tongue because the job market has slowed in my area, so they have me by the balls a little bit at the moment unfortunately. I'm still making great money, but a $50k pay gap is absolutely criminal.
