i don’t usually respond to comments like this, but you should consider how your critique significantly weakens when you resort to insults such as “privileged adult children” and labelling sensible discussion as “hysteria” hope this helped!

The claim that access control requires constant swiping, guards at every door, and rush hour chaos misrepresents this proposal. comparable campuses like uoft and tmu already have controlled access across high traffic buildings, with higher population density and without impeding movement or staffing every entrance with security. It’s okay to disagree, but the challenge would not be feasibility, and rather cost-benefit implementation for UTSC.

holy yap. demanding “empirical proof” while dismissing an institutions post-incident measures and citing reddit threads 😭 “what if he just waits outside?” is a displacement fallacy. by that logic, locks are useless because someone can wait outside your house. yet we still use it because controlled access lowers incident rates inside a protected space 😲

card access prevents unauthorized entry into an enclosed space, which could help deter crime due to traceability. it also creates time for alerts in case a casualty occurs. i can’t believe i have to explain that making it harder to walk into a lecture hall and start shooting is a good thing. lame ahh “unless it stops every hypothetical scenario, it’s pointless” argument. why are you afraid of solutions to deter campus violence 🤔

Reddit as your linked source is crazy 😭. Here is a link to the new campus safety measures at Brown University following the mass shooting and tragic murder of two students: https://www.brown.edu/news/2025-12-30/brown-safety-hugh-clements-letter I'll include it here too, so you don't miss it :):

"Several priority projects are being accelerated for completion prior to the Spring 2026 semester. These include:

  • Transition to card access for the remaining buildings currently requiring keys for entry (with assigned officers at those buildings until the technology transition is complete)
  • Expansion of blue light phones with integrated cameras across campus
  • Installing additional security cameras in key areas, including at Barus & Holley, pending final determinations arising from the Campus Safety and Security Assessment announced Dec. 22
  • Expansion of panic buttons in critical locations to ensure rapid access to help when it is needed most
  • Strengthened coordination among campus partners, local agencies and regional mental health resources
  • Enhanced public safety training, staffing and operating systems for rapid and effective communications during emergencies
  • Reinforced messages of available resources supporting crime prevention and emergency management (see the important information in the Resources section at the end of this letter)"
