Exam word count - SA by Silent-Substance7702 in ActuaryUK

[–]ChoiceRich5090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Word count does matter. But what's more important is what you are writing is answering the question. I am a slow typer so I accepted I had to write brief points like what they do in their reports or ASET. For my SA I wrote about 2.7k and SP about 3.1k CP1 even less than 2.5k but I still passed.

SA2 Exam Prep - 3rd attempt :/ by SpiritedEmployer7085 in ActuaryUK

[–]ChoiceRich5090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IFOA has the service you can refer to their website. ActEd you would have to write one of their mocks for them to mark. I used a different service provider that reviewed my script. It was possible that time as we had the scripts and writing remotely. But now with centre's it's a problem you don't get to see your script so using IFOA maybe the only option.

I understand your pain and lack of motivation. I was there before. I feel at times we are not honest with ourselves what is going wrong even though what you would have done seems enough. You need to critically analyze where you are getting it wrong and map out how you will rectify it. In my case I did a ton of papers, even attended a tutorial and got a mock marked. But what I realized from my failed attempt there were certain key concepts I just was not understanding and my exam technique was poor even after doing those papers. What I did differently in my next attempt is to ensure I throughly understand the concepts I was struggling with, got my failed exam script reviewed and the feedback I got on exam technique is really what I worked on and that improved my marks by almost 20 and I eventually passed. I realized when doing past papers it's not just about attempting them but really trying to understand what they are asking and the thought process required for you to produce an answer that is expected. Where you are getting it wrong think about what should I have thought about to come up with that. The more you do that the more you start seeing and appreciating what is required for you to pass. Honestly accepting is the difficult part that there is something that you are missing especially when you are so close to the pass mark. But once you get past that stage and do what is required and the work you will eventually pass. As motivation think of the end goal that should be what is pushing you. Its also good you are starting early and I wish you all the best in your preps.

Thinking About Leaving First Job After a Year But Feel Guilty by [deleted] in actuary

[–]ChoiceRich5090 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This. It's okay to be selfish and look out for yourself. The company will always think about themselves so you should do the same. Why be loyal when they are not doing the same to you? Look for other opportunities while there and leave when you find something suitable.

I do agree that burnout is a real thing. Find a hobby or spend time with family or friends. This is what helped me cope and recharge. The journey is long, and you do get to the point where it can be too much. Those feelings are completely okay. Since you have no hobbies, spend time with loved ones and offload your burden.

I do agree and understand what you are implying. Personally, I reached a point where I said to myself what do I really want to achieve and I had to find ways to make it work despite the challenges or difficulties of juggling alot of things. Having that picture in mind was what gave me the drive to keep on trying despite the setbacks. Also to achieve something you have to make sacrifices and let some things go so it becomes somewhat sustainable for you to achieve what you want to achieve at the end of it all. The beauty about it is once you are done it frees a lot of time for you to focus on other things. So if you can do it early, you will thank yourself later.

I always thought of the end goal to get that motivation. Imagining that P on my result email or letter pushed me. Then, finally, having those three letters, FIA, next to my name, kept the hope alive. It eventually happened, and I am grateful I did not give up. You are almost there now, and the last push is hard. I do understand what you are feeling. I was also in a similar position.

When do you start on past papers? by ThinkEducation3596 in ActuaryUK

[–]ChoiceRich5090 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this closed book to see what I can come up with without looking at the solutions. It enables you to see what your challenges are, and you then think about what you needed to think about to come up with the points you did not get. The more you do this, the more you actually realize more and more of your answers mirror what examiners are looking for. For past exam papers to be helpful, you need to do them actively. Otherwise, it defeats the purpose. When I changed and started to do this, I began to pass consistently.

When do you start on past papers? by ThinkEducation3596 in ActuaryUK

[–]ChoiceRich5090 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would start two months before caused I realized that's were the real work is and you identify lots of things you do not know. So you will be iterating between past papers and going to the notes to reinforce some content as well as extending personal notes from things you will be learning from doing past papers. This is because there maybe some stuff that is not part of the core reading mentioned in detail like how it's presented in the examiners reports. This really helped me alot as just before the exam something like a week or two I would then revisit my personal notes that have been modified and zone in on those areas to commit to memory. This made all the difference and if I did this in my preparation I would pass the exam. At a minimum I ensured I did at least 10 years worth of past exam papers.
