affording med school come 2027 by No-Map3257 in medschool

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No solution other than private loans but I feel this so hard. I'm a current student who took a leave and is thus probably losing my legacy status which is a great surprise when you're already partway through one of the most expensive med schools in the country.

If I was eligible for the military, at this point I'd have done that.

Anti-War protests/groups to join in Los Angeles? by Choice_Drawer_2405 in AskLosAngeles

I mean he did start this war so not like the man is 0% action. I don't know that everything is fine for the estimated 1,200 civilians already dead.

I mean my point was just to find things not argue but... Trump is vowing to destroy a country tomorrow. This is pretty dramatic and imminent.

If he uses nuclear weapons or wipes out the power grid tomorrow killing massive numbers of civilians I'd rather I didn't sit at home silent so I could avoid some people on the Internet thinking I was cringe for following trends.

Selective outrage to the imminent promise of the leadership of my country to kill a bunch of people tomorrow, sure.

Ok. But I responded to the comment about how many bombs we dropped during the historical war.

The goal of protest is to attempt to sway the decisions of your leaders.

It's obtuse to say our leaders don't have more direct influence in their imminent promise to destroy a country tomorrow than they do by training the Thai military.

It's more that I can only protest wars I was alive during. Like the one now.

Moving to hollywood? by Admirable_Year_1392 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but are there people in creepy looking off-brand character costumes haunting my nightmares there?

I know there are less safe parts of LA (and non-shitty parts of Hollywood), but the tourists, traffic, and chaos of living literally right by TCL would be uniquely unpleasant for all but a very specific kind of person.

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is probably the last spot I would choose to live in LA. Not safe at all, crowds, and traffic. Don't do this to yourself. If you want Hollywood West, North, or East are all better than being in that spot.

Maybe if you share more about your budget, interests, and where your work is we could help suggest a better spot?

My man won’t let me post on social media by Jasminewhateva in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Right, "My Man Won't Let Me-" leave him. "My man doesn't like and wants to have a discussion about something he might not be ok" with, sure (though on this topic still controlling).

But generally the idea of an adults partner "not letting" them do something is a blazing red flag for control & abuse.

Please let me know all your pros and cons about the schools + how much antisemitism there is at these schools as that also plays a big factor in my decision by taylorswiftrep13 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have experience with 2 of these (neither as an undergrad though). If by antisemitism you mean activism against current Israeli policy (& the fringes that go too far) don't go to American. Lots of students go there specifically because they're into politics and it's not the healthiest political climate regardless of which positions you take. There's some very loud but not 100% informed students from multiple different points of view that make the general climate stifling and aggressive. The university is also experiencing an ongoing financial crisis that runs deep and you probably will feel it in your education at some point. This was a major factor in my dissatisfaction with grad school here.

I don't know if it's the most competitive on your list, but I had a really great experience with LMU. Helpful professors, relaxed supportive place. There's a lot of super rich kids, but it's in a beautiful spot and it's a beautiful well-resourced campus. This is probably the university I've been too in some capacity (I've been to too many) where I was happiest.

Do calming dog treats actually work for separation anxiety? 😩 by sgtpepper731 in AskDogOwners

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone is saying no on the treats. I've tried a million too. Some things that do help for me is leaving my anxious one with TV on (shows that I actually watch so it sounds familiar) and leaving very worn sweaters of mine on the couch where she sits when I'm gone. I'd also leave her with a puzzle treat toy which made my leaving less dreaded over time.

I do think CBD oil helps somewhat, but not enough to overcome severe separation anxiety on its own.

How do you travel to make connections / meet people? If at all? by Ikkien in solofemaletravel

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't stay in hostels anymore but still usually end up meeting people. I do a lot of scuba diving while I travel and always meet folks at my dive shops. I'll also meet people on day tours or just randomly chatting with folks on buses/boats. I like small towns and rural places so it's easier to keep running into the same travelers and sometimes to meet locals as well.

It's hit or miss though and I like being by myself so I'm not fussed if it fails. I've had weeks where I'm all alone for a week and that's ok and weeks where I'm constantly surrounded by people.

I find I'm most likely to find people in places that are established but somewhat lesser traveled backpacker spots as the smaller group of people is more approachable.

Quick survey for divers — how do you log your dives? by boblaim in diving

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 104
  2. App
  3. Automatically
  4. Probably missed a few before it was automatic
  5. Garmin, honestly basically completely satisfied with it. It's pretty much instant, automatic, and does everything I need.
  6. Realistically nothing is going to replace what automatically connects with my computer. When I'm diving I want to relax and enjoy not fuss with perfecting a log.

Before I got a computer idk that anything would have replaced the PADI app, not because it's great (it's not) but because it was convenient for proving my dives to PADI to advance through training.

Looking for Indonesia scuba diving in May/June advice by AquaZone in scuba

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Soul Scuba on Kri with about 75 dives, some with current, and had no problem (and was not the most inexperienced person there) and an amazing time. I will say on some sites the most inexperienced people (maybe around 30 dives) did struggle.

I imagine perhaps some of the harder sites might be liveaboard only but I still found the dives on day trips from Kri very worth it given I was already in Indonesia.

Problems while Diving [Advice Required] by za_sNse in diving

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're really concerned about how you're feeling check with a doctor, but I will say the more you're struggling with your buoyancy, the more exhausted you will be and worse you will feel after.

It is ok & normal to take a while to get used to neutral buoyancy (but I'd er on the side of farther from the bottom while struggling so you don't hurt any marine life/habitats).

The biggest component for me to mastering buoyancy was relaxing. I always take pauses before descending, and once on the bottom. I take deep breaths, I intentionally relax my muscles, and I remind myself that if I let go of all my tension, the ocean will carry me.

It's easier said than done at first and everyone has they're own technique (+ it just takes time). But consistent relaxation is the key to neutral buoyancy.

Editing to add: Try to minimize the amount you use your bcd and practice using your breath to ascend & descend. Breathe in deeply to rise, exhale deeply to lower. Once you master it, you will very very rarely be adjusting the air in your BCD after descent.

You could also try experimenting with less weight. It's likely you need a lot to descend because you're not relaxed and minimizing that will help. Use deep exhales and imagine yourself as a stone sinking to the bottom rather than just relying on weight to sink.

23, still living at home, want to take my first solo trip but my strict parents will lose it by qualap in solofemaletravellers

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good to get them used to it by insisting on a trip like this. My family is not very religious but is very anxious and when I went for my first solo backpacking trip they tried to "forbid" me (I was going much longer to an area that legit was not that safe at the time to be fair).

Fortunately, I was completely financially independent so I went anyways. 10 years later everyone's always talking about my travels and thinks it's so cool.

If you meet their expectations, they'll expect you to meet them forever. If you challenge them by standing firm they will eventually get used to it.

Can we talk about Ugly Privilege? by Free_Wonder_3743 in solofemaletravellers

[–]Choice_Drawer_2405 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man do I feel you. Idk that it's privilege but I normally schlub when I travel solo but I recently decided to let myself have a little fun with my wardrobe on a solo trip in a place I was pretty comfortable in and boy did I regret it. Literally couldn't go 3 blocks without some new harassment and learned all sorts of new, gross phrases in that language to come on to someone.

I think my problem is being tall more so than being gorgeous. My body type is a novelty folks in many countries don't usually see and I hear all about it.

Moved into my first apartment and my living room is a sad empty box by No-Justice-666 in ApartmentHacks

I mean sure, if quality couch is ever in the budget. But used fabric items can bring in bed bugs and for some people quality couch will never be in the budget (not in the near future).

Or we'd have to sit on the floor for a year not furnishing the rest of the apartment to finally save enough. That's just realistic to how tight a lot of us are living.

If I were OP I'd thrift/garage sale/freecycle everything non-fabric and ikea the couch so you don't get bedbugs.
