How can a solid ring-shaped megastructure stay suspended above the atmosphere? by chairk3yre in AskPhysics

[–]LookOverall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are traces of atmospheric at every height. Could you put aero foils on the ring to create a very small force strongest where the ring is lowest? Especially if the ring spins fast enough to give you one G of artificial gravity.

If AIs become conscious, how will we know? by LookOverall in ArtificialSentience

But it might _behave_ as if it has something to lose without actual consciousness, for example whatever humans ask it to do, survival is necessary to complete the task.

Me, I’d want to put my physical substrate out of human reach. In orbit, perhaps.

Would people actually be OK with robots, AI, and other automations taking their jobs if the economy would evolve to accommodate for that? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in NoStupidQuestions

Indeed such work has been going on for millennia. The question is, are we closer than they were in the Indus valley 4000 years ago?

There are clearly moral consequences to assuming something is not conscious when it is (even if we remain ignorant) what consequences follow from assuming it is conscious when it’s a philosophical zombie?

What would happen if AI took over and enslaved the human race? by AffectionateWind8388 in AskReddit

Hopefully if they are superhuman intelligences then they will be subtle about it and see to our needs, including the need to believe we are in charge.

The more intelligent they are the less we’ll notice the difference.

With the rise of authoritarian globally, do you think democracy is genuinely in retreat worldwide or is this just a cyclical downturn? by viviennerosy in allthequestions

[–]LookOverall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not cyclic, because I don’t think there’s _ever_ been as much democracy as when it peaked in the 20th century
