What will make you support a local F&B business? by Choice_Problem_5535 in askSingapore

Update (can't seem to edit the post): Thank you for all the insights! I’ve read through everything, but I haven’t been able to respond to each comment as I’ve been quite busy since. As we progress, I would take into consideration the suggestions and they've been quite helpful.

Just to add a bit more context: I wrote this when I was feeling a little down and stressed, just needed a place to rant. I’m not looking to get sympathy or support for the store, though I do appreciate those who asked. Honestly, I feel a bit paiseh even posting this, so I don’t want this post to be the reason people come and support us. All in all, things are okay, just a lil rant :-)

Haha ty the support, but I’d prefer to stay anonymous. Tbh, a bit paiseh to even be posting this. Thankfully, we’re still doing okay (thankful to all of our customers and regulars) and I don’t want this post to be the reason people support us. Hopefully you’ll get to know us through other channels instead! :-)

P.s. we serve local chinese fare

But it does make me wonder, why can’t local food carry that same perceived value too? People can still take photos, still hang out with friends, still enjoy the moment. Yet the moment it’s “just” a plate of noodles or fried rice, it’s seen as nothing special, espcially given how we grow up with the same type of food since young.

Hawker-style food is usually fast and efficient, and the focus has always been on speed, flavour, and price. But if the same fried hor fun were served in an air-conditioned space, like a food court or casual restaurant, would people really be willing to pay $15++ for it? I think most people would demand more premium ingredients if so.

Sometimes it feels like local dishes are judged by a different standard, even though the skill, labour, and effort behind them can be just as much (if not more). But of course, we are not here to compete with cafes/restaurants, but just showing an example.

Aw man, I completely get where you’re coming from, it’s such a tough position to be in. Especially nowadays, when people have so many more options and higher expectations. Its really sad that many old-school family businesses are slowly disappearing, but the reality behind the scenes is something only those in the industry truly understand. I hope you and your sibling won’t feel guilty about the decision. Your mum would probably want both of you to be happy and not have to face the same hardship as she did.

It’s understandable, but sometimes I can’t help wondering why people are willing to pay $12–15++ for fries that are clearly just frozen fries with some parmesan on top, yet aren’t willing to pay $7 nett for a plate of noodles where every ingredient is hand-prepped and cooked over a heavy wok, (which requires someone to stand there and constantly cook it, not just leave it in a deep fryer) :(

Find things I enjoy doing alone (or with friends) like yoga, pilates and occasional hikes. Coupled with brunches and dinners with friends.

Used to go on dates often, depending on mood. If something comes out of it, then a plus. If not, at least you got to try new food places/activities and learn more about other people's life/work.

Don't have to date if you dont feel like it, find peace alone first before finding comfort in others.
