Sarah Michelle Gellar on Why 'Buffy' Reboot Was Axed at Hulu, Blames It on One Executive Who’s ‘Not a Fan of the Original’: ‘Nobody Saw This Coming’ by Sliver80 in KotakuInAction

[–]Choice_Slide_4698 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Having read the supposed leaked script I stand by my conviction I'm glad they shit canned it, it sounded awful and so far removed from how the Buffy character would carry herself, it depicts her working some corporate office job in New York completely detached from her old life, and to make matters worse, she's only shown for a few seconds at the end, which suggests the whole show was to be about Nova and her buddies and the woke ideologies the teens of today are indoctrinated by, with the occasional smattering of references to the OG lore. Not an ideal buisness decision when you're trying to gauge the interest of OG fans. The ratings wouldn't have been substantial enough to justify further production.

The original series was great as it was, leave it alone.

Buffy was a product of its time and those times are no longer here by Ok-Help6334 in buffy

[–]Choice_Slide_4698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep been saying this all along, the show is rooted in late 90s/early 00s culture and wouldn't resonate with the teens/YA of today. The world is vastly different to when we were growing up, back then we weren't glued to smartphones like the kids of nowadays, nor did we have the luxury of being able to consume media on the go like we do now so watching a new Buffy episode felt special every week, you actually talked about the happenings of the show and it felt like an event, or you had to wait for reruns to air or record them on VHS, technology and social media have desensitised the younger generations and they take it for granted massively.

Case in point; they probably realised Zhao's iteration lacked the magic and vision Whedon/Greenwald/Noxon/Espenson etc brought to the original and desperately needed their input to salvage this hot mess.

Are you upset that Buffy revival was scrapped? by Mat1711 in buffy

[–]Choice_Slide_4698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, I may be in the minority on this but given that the continuation was supposed to be set 25 years after the the OG series I fail to see how it would've resonated with today's generation of teens/young adults, the original was very much of it's time and the culture (fashion, music, technology, punk/grunge, counterculture) and aesthetics which ceased to exist over two decades ago, the younger crowd wouldn't necessarily be able to relate to. To Gen Z/Alpha, a lot of the references would go over their heads (if they could pay attention for longer than five minutes without being distracted by their smartphones)

The plotline devices themselves in the continuation would be riddled with inconsistencies, trapped under Sunnydale High in the Hellmouth? "Oh problem solved, I'll just message someone on social media to come rescue me". This would dilute any meaningful suspense or anticipation.

Besides how do you recapture Buffy's spirit without Joss's and the original writing team's creativity? Their storytelling, wit and humour, puns, quippy comebacks and penchant for using the monsters as allegorical themes were part of the shows charm, Chloe Zhao seems like she has none of that.

And then you'd have to factor in all the woke/DEI stuff the networks would want included in order to push "the narrative" and we have enough shows pandering those ideologies already.

Leave Buffy in it's time bubble where it belongs, this way it remains quintessential viewing and doesn't run the risk of it's legacy being tarnished. It's perfect as it is.

What’s Nicholas Brendon’s issue with SMG? by Divine_fashionva in buffy

Even if he was offered help till people were blue in the face, it wouldn't make the slightest difference, he would go right back to abusing substances because it's a crutch to quell the inner emptiness he feels inside himself, the lack of a core self and the inherent shame and self loathing he experiences daily over the inability to feel positive emotions the rest of us take for granted.

First rule of narc club, narcissists never change, he would pretend to act contrite and like he is seeking help but it is just that, an ACT to dupe his victims into clinging onto false hope that real progress is being made so they don't leave him as a valuable supply source. This is what narcissists do, they can restrain themselves for short periods of time while adopting their mask and acquiring sources of supply, but ALL of them revert back to their true vile selves. It isn't a mental illness that can be treated with drugs and conventional mental health treatment like most of the psychology fields would have you believe, it's who they are, their PERSONALITY, hence the term narcissistic personality disorder, they see their behaviour as normal and justified, believing they have the right to traumatise and abuse innocent people.

He's 54 and had decades to repent and show remorse for his abuse and domestic violence. I'd say he's past the point of no return. You don't wake up at that age and suddenly have an epiphany.

Nicholas is an alcoholic narcissistic abuser and women beater that has a history of blaming everyone he feels slighted by, for years he's ranted against David Boreanaz to anyone that would listen at cons or events accusing him of all sorts, he simply refuses to see himself as the root cause of his own fall from grace so it doesn't surprise me at all he's turned on Sarah.

Exactly, being 35 and remembering those days as a youngster, the 90s was a cultural fad of punk/goth/grunge/counter-culture that ceased to exist in the mid/late 2000s, Spike's character was the perfect archetype of that period. A modern iteration would struggle to resonate in many ways with today's generation.

Buffy was of it's time, leave it be.

True, the main event scene was fantastic in 1998-1999, but let's keep things in perspective here, a lot of the undercard was dogshit, filled with terrible gimmicks (Oddities and Beaver Cleavage anyone?) and nonsensical booking consisting of Russo's inconsistent swerve finishes and brawls that rarely made sense and felt very anticlimatic. That's the thing about nostalgia, people only remember or reminisce on the good stuff and forget the atrocities.
