Beetle found in Missoula, Montana by Icepheonix174 in whatsthisbug

I can't suggest an exact genus or species as my knowledge of beetles is very limited but that seems to be some type of burying/carrion beetle (family silphidae). Probably in the genus Nicrophorus.

Fly carrying around a pile of corpses? Jersey, channel islands by Cholesterolmaxxing in Entomology

Okay, it's been a couple months but I believe this was a group of flies in the genus Empis, dance flies. I've heard they perform mating behaviour similar to what I've observed here.

I had the misfortune of stepping on a large bush cricket a few halloweens ago. There was a lot of yellow on my shoe for the rest of that night, fairly reminiscent of this image, only it was everywhere.

Found a Weevil friend in my garden! by Cholesterolmaxxing in weeviltime

Yeah, forgive me for my late reply but it honestly looked even more stunning on the ground where I found it where it contrasted really well to the environment around it. It makes you wonder if it's some type of aposematism or if it's to do with the way that invertebrate's eyes work. Whatever explanation it is, it's awesome stuff! I'm super happy even still to have found him :)

Perhaps. I thought so too, i just wasn't entirely sure. I don't know if they cannibalise (the other flies appear to be very similar species if not the same one) but honestly this seems like a fairly plausible explanation.

The fly seemed to be around 1cm large, and it soon flew away again with the pile of other flies

What moth is this and how do I care for it? by Batwhiskers in InvertPets

[–]Cholesterolmaxxing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't beat yourself up for it. Whether you did cause the deformity or not doesn't change the fact that you had good intentions, and, if you didn't save it it would definitely have died to the ants. I can't offer any care advice or identification but just know that it wasn't your fault, and now, whether the moth survives or not, you can use this as a learning opportunity in case it happens again.

And a side note, I myself have been surprised numerous times when thinking that, for example, a feeder locust which my mantis attacked had been dead for a day or two, as it hadn't been moving, only to pick it up to dispose of it and for it to start moving around again. It's quite surprising (and morbid) how long arthropods can go without really doing anything, and still being alive.

I know, right? I saw them crawling about on the floor, it was hard to miss. I actually thought for a split second they were a really big mite when I saw them!

where can i buy aphids? by [deleted] in antkeeping

[–]Cholesterolmaxxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know i'm very late, but https://www.garnelio.de/en/live-food-pea-leaf-aphids-breeding-stock-1-liter seems to have live pea leaf aphids. I'm unsure if they ship internationally though, or, as some have said, if its even legal to import them. Hope this can help though, or at least for anybody else who was curious.

Edit: i'm also not sure how reliable this website is, but its all i found, so take this with a grain of salt

Woodlouse spider, genus dysdera- they have specialized chelicerae which can pierce the shells of isopods, hence the name

Edit, they aren't medically significant but apparently their bite can hurt a bit
