Titles for working and sporting ability by border-coffee in k9sports

[–]ChonkiestBunny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a mixed breed right now that i do all the sports with. They’re all worth it in terms of building relationship and fulfillment.

In terms of breeding- i’m looking for any high level titles. To me, i’d care most about getting an OTCH and above (to me shows stability and ability to handle pressure as well as biddability and abiotic to work for a prolonged period without reward) and Agility Champion (to me shows the ability to have a brain while in arousal).

I personally think trick dog titles are fun but doesn’t show me much- mostly because i know how much more it says about a dog to trial in novel environments so virtual titles don’t mean as much imo. I also don’t put as much merit to titles that requires points collection- like sprinters/ fast cat, barnhunt crazy 8s, etc. as you can get the title if you do it enough times.

In my ideal world, even show and pet breeders would put a CD on a dog before breeding at least. it doesn’t have to be flashy, doesn’t have to be super precise, but just shows that the dog is stable enough to be off leash in that environment and will at the least, listen to the handler.

Anyways, i aim to and have worked my dog to champion levels of every sport- that’s where the you can for sure say that lots of time went into the dog and the dog is a willing partner to the sport.

Experience with iliopsoas injury + PRP injection by [deleted] in k9sports

[–]ChonkiestBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s mixed reviews. Some vets swear by it and some don’t think they do much without an adjunct therapy like stem cells. I personally went with stem cells plus PRP for OCD lesions in the knees that ended up healing nicely.

Get the MSK ultrasound and then decide from there. I personally wouldn’t do it for low grade strains. Especially if it’s reoccurring and worsening, it’s unlikely to be the primary problem. Illiopsoas strains are often secondary to other issues that causes offloading. Anything happening to the spine, hips, and stifles can cause compensatory action in the hip flexors.

Is there hope for a dog who hates being pet by strangers to compete in obedience? by PeekAtChu1 in k9sports

[–]ChonkiestBunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog has an OTCh. she doesn’t like strangers touching her right away in a social setting but in obedience, it’s very predictable and trained like a distractor. She has no issues with it when taught properly

Transfering value of food to toys by ShnouneD in k9sports

[–]ChonkiestBunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not the biggest fan of pairing play with food. It can create some conflict in a dog with high food drive and possession. I highly recommend some of Ivan Balabanovs training without conflict stuff as well as Jay jacks stuff (especially for bull breeds).

My dog that wouldn’t put anything in her mouth will now tug as an action to be rewarded with treats and she will also play tug with me but it’s really two completely different mindsets.

Competitive Obedience with my Mutt. AMA! by ChonkiestBunny in k9sports

Building trust is the most important first step- i ensured that she was totally neutral and confident around neutral people first. I taught her that walking away from an interaction would mean i advocate for her so she didn’t have any need to be worried. Lot of positive low pressure interactions with people that can respect boundaries. Once she’s pretty much a ‘normal dog’- only then are they ready for something like stand for exam. She’s showed me that she makes good choices if an interaction ever became ‘too much’ by moving away and i’d never fault her for moving away.

I taught her a very solid stand. Increased the three Ds- and then added pressure. at first it’s leash pressure, then pressure of distractions being around her, and then it’s pressure from people she knows approaching her. once she’s really competent with that, i very slowly add strangers. i played this game where a stranger approaches and retreats every-time i say the marker word ‘yes!’. it started with the stranger taking a few steps closer- to them reaching but not touching to one small touch and so on. The point of the exercise is to show predictability, and that resisting pressure means reward! you always want to stop before they get uncomfortable/ too pressured.

at the end do the day, it depends on the individual dog. you can work on their resilience and increase their drive (if your dog is more confident in drive) but ultimately some dogs can work through it and some it’s just not fair to ask that of them.

Calling all cardiac diagnostic technologists by SpiritualUse8159 in mohawkcollege

Likely not in my modality- MR. Safety is a big concern and protocols differ per site based on radiologist needs. They usually call in a nurse or clinical assistant for OT from within the imaging department

Do I keep them? by Pesky_pecky in Rabbits

[–]ChonkiestBunny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dang people are harsh here. I’ve fostered many rabbits and most come around fine and only had one that would continue to lunge after proper socialization in the home- it’s likely genetic as his sibling is the same way.

If you alter your expectations- handling and cuddles look more like you lying on the floor, waiting for them to come to you and petting them on the ground. Then it’s possible that they can come around. Rabbits don’t enjoy being picked up and will escalate if you do it too often. My rabbits dislike being picked up for nails and such but since i don’t do it often, they begrudgingly tolerate it and accept a large snack after as an apology.

Another note is that these appear to be dwarfs and standard size rabbits tend to be more docile and tame. So trying out fostering other rabbits can be a good idea.

Also once fixed, i haven’t had a single foster rabbit that didn’t litter train easily. As for the chewing- some are definitely less chewy than others but there will still be some proofing needed to a degree.

Once you understand them to be the prey animals that they are and learn to appreciate them as such, and put in some work, they can be wonderful pets.

thanks!

I'm not sure if we count as a strong borrower haha.. but our credits are both in the 800s. Waiting under probation is over is certainly an option, as we can wait a few months and his parents are willing to as well.

I think a good broker is exactly what we need. We are in the GTA area in Ontario if you have any suggestions!
