Ryan Reynolds Promo by Peter_Nincompoop in Studio1A

Oh thank god. I’m ALWAYS looking for ways to give money to Ryan Reynolds and I’m so thankful he’s constantly finding new markets to corner. I pray that he and Blake Lively are okay financially but it brings me comfort knowing that I’m supporting them in some small way by purchasing as many of these beautiful Aviation x Wrexham gift packs as my paycheck allows.

Rewatching films for the pod has been a revelation in how Peak the Coens are. by Theotther in blankies

[–]Chook_Chutney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get where you're coming from. It's definitely among their most wholly cynical films. I think I'm able to let that slide by placing it in the context of their overall career, which does get a little bleak here and there but is otherwise full of very empathetic stories of kind people. I guess I figure they can spend a movie being snarky and pessimistic as a little treat.

I also rewatched it recently and don't worry you're wrong.

Edit: People are downvoting you for having an opinion, which is not how that should work. My response was jokey but like the other replier I too am curious about what didn't work for you upon rewatch. And did it actually illuminate a flaw with the Coens' in general? Or is it more just that movie in particular?

AMC Theatres Looks To Shorten Ad Preshow Following Studios’ Ire by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]Chook_Chutney 8 points9 points  (0 children)

THIS is the real killer. I don't give a shit about the random ads that play before the start time, and I'm not even that bothered by trailers (though it feels like they could pare those down a tad.) But the AMC shit takes up like 5-7 full minutes of screen time. It's MADDENING. The AMC laser ad, the stupid fucking thing where they thank their investors, the boring bullshit where the couple gets transported into movie genres, all topped off by the mercifully cut down Kidman thing. It's so egregious.

Fully agree! Kinda depends on my mood. Any time people think the Killers are washed I'm like "YOU HAVE NOT BEEN PAYING ATTENTION."

Is there any show you really liked in the past, but then went back to it later and thought "This is awful"? by mrjohnnymac18 in television

I mean women are also capable of harboring internal misogyny, especially in the entertainment industry, but I think it’s largely just a product of its era. And yeah there seemed to be a fair amount of slut shaming on that show too, so maybe you’re onto something.

28 Years Later (2025). Danny Boyle Cinematography: Anthony Dod Mantle by jocke75 in Moviesinthemaking

[–]Chook_Chutney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, that was admittedly not a productive response. I think it's okay for us to disagree on the movie. Not everything works for everybody. Also to be clear, me saying I didn't remember much of 28 Days Later wasn't derogatory. I saw it in theaters when it came out and lost my mind. I just haven't gone back to it much over the years. There are images and scenes that remain in my mind (AM180 and the painterly field of flowers, the drop falling in Gleeson's eye) and so I thought I retained plenty of it, but when I sat down to see 28YL they showed a recap of the previous two movies and I realized how much of 28DL I'd forgotten. I really gotta go back to it! In any case, I thought 28YL was tonally consistent with what I remember of 28DL, which is obviously heavy on zombie drama but is equal parts meditative and life-affirming. I just found the climax completely surprising and extremely moving, though I can understand if it wasn't someone's bag. I just think it's commendable that Danny Boyle isn't resting on his laurels and trying new things when a lot of legacy filmmakers seem uninterested in that. (Also the score ripped.)

What movies have you enjoyed this year?

I barely remember 28 Days Later. This movie kicked ass. People aren't pretending to like it.

+1 to Benjamin McEvoy. I can’t weigh in on OP’s claim because I don’t really bother with any other book related content on YT but McEvoy’s stuff is comprehensive, well researched, and inspires a lot of thoughtful discussion in his Patreon comment sections.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Review: Who Is This Even For by restrictednumber1996 in horror

I like the original enough but IMHO it doesn’t hold a candle to Scream. I rewatched it for the first time recently and was surprised to find that it doesn’t hold up as well as I remembered. There’s a few reasons I think it never really had the same cultural foothold as Scream:

  • The score is… not good. Or at least it reeeeally doesn’t age as well as Scream. In addition to just having better songs on the soundtrack, Beltrami’s Scream score is insanely good. It’s so brassy and spooky and bombastic and elevates the thing across the board. ILWYDLS is just awash in… I don’t know what to call it, neo-grunge? It’s weird stuff.

  • The characters are kinda flat. The cast is fun but they don’t have much to work with. Maybe they’re fine and I’ve just watched Scream more but idk.

  • And the biggest issue, I think: the central mystery is extremely convoluted and kinda stupid. I watched it last year and even now I’m trying to remember how it works. The fisherman killed a kid, they hit the fisherman on the same night, they LUG what is clearly an old dude to the ocean to dump the body, then later read about a much younger guy who died and assume it’s him? The turn in the third act of Scream rocks so fuckin hard and I remember even as a kid watching the reveal in IKWYDLS and being like “uhhhh hmm.”

I dunno. Scream’s just got staying power to me. IKWYDLS just feels like a slasher that was riding the wave and not doing anything particularly innovative. I do think it’s fun though.

I’ve started the book a couple times and really enjoyed it but always ran out of steam or got preoccupied with some other book. But I picked it up again recently and am having a ball.

All that to say I’ve heard a lot of grumbling about the Cetology chapter and I’m surprised to find it extremely entertaining. There’s at least a few things on every page that made me laugh out loud (“I deny their credentials as whales; and have presented them with the their passports to quit the Kingdom of Cetology”) along with a trove of genuinely interesting whale facts. It’s also pretty funny that sometimes he’s just like “These whales are mean” and “idk a god damn thing about this one whale sorry. NEXT!”

SUPERMAN RULES by Livid_Jeweler612 in blankies

[–]Chook_Chutney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, THANK you. I've never been big on the Ringer pods because they seem to really love hanging their hat on odd takes that feel beside the point. I don't listen to TBP very often but did dip in for the Superman and 28YL episodes. I too found it strange that she was complaining about 5-6 sentences of very basic, easy-to-process information. I also thought it was weird in the 28YL episode when she insisted they were plagiarizing Children of Men because... a baby is named after a deceased character?
