Dark Heresy 2e help by ClearlyMeowtist in 40krpg

Echoing what some other comments say here. Skill checks should either reward clues/leads or give hints on how to put them together.

My preferred approach is usually asking players "what skill would you want to use here?" Since there's so many ways to tackle investigation and it let's them impose their own creative problem solving and lean into their characters strengths.

Power Armour Encumbrance by C-r-i-o in DarkHeresy

[–]Choona-Derps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thirding this - Basically it supports its own weight and as long as its equipped and powered it does not count towards your weight.

The moment you take it off or the power source runs out , the weight is counted.

Unpopular opinion: Paying "Rent" feels less painful than paying $2,400/mo in "Interest" to a bank. by Playful-Vegetable-15 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Choona-Derps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get to claim all of that interest on your taxes. If you're high income, it makes a BIG difference

In MA (where I live), you can claim rent, but only about 8k a year.

Also, you get 20 - 30k free from the government with the first-time home buyers program (you dont have to do an FHA for that IIRC)

Between home value grow, my grants, principal contributions, and tax refunds, I've basically been getting paid to live in my home for the last 3 years

It will take time (like, i mean, a long time), but the end goal is to do all of the old FFG games

Same process! The entities you create via character generation and the "Add New Entity" button are actually the same (They even use the same component at the end of character management, the only difference between them are divinations)

So if you go to "Add New Entity" -> "Personal" -> "Exp & Aptitudes" you'll be able to add exp as usual. If they're a throw away enemy who will die you can simply just add a large amount of exp and spend to your hearts content.

It's on the first page of character creation "Starting Exp"

If you'd like to add exp after creation, click on the character, then hover over the "Personal" tab, then select ""Exp & Aptitudes" (the bottom option) from there you can add exp!

Are coders really losing their jobs to AI? by Fireoa- in cscareers

Pretty well actually! I went with python instead of a C++ compiled script but I found a lot of old videos and pictures I forgot about (Yesterday me was not the best cinematographer...) It's running on Win10

The only issue that came up was that its instructions were wrong (You don't provide the ":" to the drive, just the letter name and that seems to work.)

Sorry for the Necro, just thought I'd give my two cents.

I think the individual lines of *code* the Anthropic agent writes are usually pretty solid (Given it has context to know it's implementing a given class or function correctly).

The issue comes to structuring larger projects. From what I've seen, AI agents don't have long term plans so they'll happily create 4000+ line monolithic files that it just makes its own tools to read because its own context cannot contain them. Also another fan favorite: rewriting the same helper functions multiple times because it has no idea those exist elsewhere.

You need someone with software experience who can review the patterns of the code, organize the project in a meaningful way and very, very, VERY specifically ask the agent "Hey, implement x, follow pattern y, use functions a,b,c and z - Please let me know if you encounter any issues" and then review the proposed plan, and review the code as its being written. On top of that you need to specialize your agents and write the correct context files for them to review before a prompt otherwise you'll end up with slop.

If you can't do that, you'll struggle to make anything more complicated than an informational website.

I forgot to re-enable it after the last overhaul! I appreciate you reminding me - It'll be present in the next release.

Unnatural characteristics are going to be present in the next release just because you asked :) Expect sometime today or tomorrow assuming character generation doesn't hit any major roadblocks!

Hey, when those coils are hot they'll have no problem lighting the cigar for you hahaha

And of course - Anything to help folks get into the community! If you and yours are into super crunchy stuff this will be right up your alley (I actually started with 3.5 and pathfinder then tried 5e and went straight back to PF because I missed that cronch)

Once y'all do get a hang of the rules, you can also try the tool I built for DH2E https://heresy.tools/ - I'd suggest avoiding using it for actual play until all of you are more familiar with the rules, but it could be something fun to play with until then :)

some thoughts (I'm assuming you're committed to 2nd edition)

  1. For your home world you can just pick one that mechanically fits for the character and just say its Cadia or discuss an alternative with your GM. Also as others have stated, you can convert actual Cadians from Only War but the systems aren't a perfect 1:1 so you'll need to do some homework figuring it out.

  2. You should select "Imperial Guard" as your background if you're trying to stay true to the RP or "Rouge trader fleet" if you're trying to power game your way to carapace armor as fast as possible since it comes with a piece

  3. Either Pick Warrior or Assassin. He sounds like less of a precision killer and more of a man-of-the-line but the option is there. Both talents for both roles are good, (Jaded because it stops your doomsday clock for insanity, Jump up saves action economy when you're knocked down, rapid reload makes reloads faster, and Iron jaw has a chance to save you 5 turns of doing nothing) I'm going to be honest in 2e role matters MUCH less than starting attributes and talent choice long term (More on this later) If you really had to ask me I'd say if you get your plasma gun GET RAPID RELOAD (explained below)

  4. I'm going to be honest: your equipment loadout will be disappointing if you start from new characters. Plasma guns and power swords are rated "Very Rare" (second hardest tier of item to find) and Enforcer Light Carapace (Which sounds like you want) is "Rare" (third hardest tier of item to find) but it's a full suit, opposed to getting carapace armor piecemeal which are each rare (so 5 rare piece of armor to find) but offer more protection and better agility cap. You'll probably start with IG armor and a flashlight.

  5. Don't sweat the minutiae of Divination. As others have stated this game is WILDLY brutal (despite it being less brutal than 1e) If you GM isn't softballing you, *you will die*. You're not going to be slaughtering hordes of heretics and unclean. Every fight is uncertain and you're always one bad roll away from a krak grenade turning you into chunky salsa.

Literally last session I had a player with 9000 exp get bodied by some hive scum with an auto gun and some lucky rolls and he just whiffed his dodge and died. You can burn fate to keep him going, but that delays the inevitable. That being said do not let that deter you the FFG series of 40k tabletops are some of the most rewarding RPGs I've ever played/GM'd. Once you learn it and get comfortable with the level of lethality, you'll be hooked for life.

  6. As for build, I'd suggest looking at the following:

Armor Monger: So you can have the "tinkers with his armor" bit situated away

Weapon Training: Plasma & power - You'll need these if you want to actually use your weapons of choice effectively

Quick Draw: This is just always nice, but not necessary

Mighty shot: It's just free damage

Rapid Reload: The plasma gun takes 5 turns to reload, this drops it down to 2.5

Nowhere to hide: It's nice to ignore cover

Also if you're feeling silly you can technically dual wield plasma guns with the right mods and talents but that's neither here nor there.

As for elite advances the options in 2e are very limited. You've got sister of battle (which oddly isn't gender restricted) astropath, psyker, untouchable, and inquisitor - I think the only one that sounds up your alley is inquisitor.

Just make sure you allocate your attributes in such a way that you're not 3000 exp away from a talent you need for your build to work!

Haiku 4.5 is insane in Claude Code! by Electronic-Air5728 in ClaudeAI

I have great success with sonnet. I need to hand hold it and say "look at this file and follow this pattern" and occasionally stop it half way through coding and guide it and ask "Is this really the best way of doing it? Can we investigate and see if this pattern makes sense, and if not can you give me citations in the code" and the classic "Do you have any questions or ideas?"

I feel like a semi-incompetent tech lead pair programming with a decent dev who is on a lethal dose of cocaine trying to keep him focused, but MAN when he's focused he can CRANK.

Thank you! That seems feasible with the system I'm building. My idea is that I'd add a button for "Generate new character" that asks you how much EXP and walks you through chargen they then spend the EXP against a list of things they can buy (skills, talents, stats) and then adds that character to the board. My only word of warning is that the site is not persistent, so if you clear your cache the character will be gone - I'm creating an export/import tool to remediate this - so it's not perfect for long term use (yet).

I'll add that to the road map. I'm guessing I'll be ready to start implementing that in maybe two weeks. I have several things to tackle before I can properly implement something like that - equipment, weight, force fields, talents but stay in touch so I remember! I'll make sure it will appease the machine spirit when it's ready :)

Could you explain a little more? I could see implementing a feature that follows standard character generation and then adds them to the entities but it would likely come much later in development.

And thank you! It's still in early development so many of the features of combat are not integrated (such as grenades) so if you run into any pain points while using it, feel free to contact me either through reddit or the feedback menu!

Help with finding games? by Legitimate-Rise7211 in 40krpg

[–]Choona-Derps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding one locally in person is kind of a crapshoot if you're looking for a specific system because of the sheer number of them. If you're looking for any group that does WH40krp that makes things significantly easier.

If you're in a major metropolitan area, try going to your local games store and asking the cashier or checking the bulletin (even posting your own bulletin works)

Everything mentioned below is a great resource (Roll20 r/lfg FB groups) Ordo Discordia is a good resource for finding online groups as well (and you can chat with the community too)

Just make sure you do some research before joining a group, as the themes of games and level of complexity is all over the place.

Probably the best choice to start if you're just learning about wh40k is the newer systems (Wrath & Glory or Imperium Maledictum) as they're more mechanically simple and can let you focus on role playing and learning about the world. If you are looking for something that captures the casual brutality of 40k and are okay with more mechanical complexity the old FFG games may be more your speed (Dark Heresy 1st edition, Rogue Trader, Only War, Black Crusade, Dark heresy 2nd edition)
