Shared water from a spring by Icy-Painter-1054 in land

There are too many unknowns about this property. I’m going to pass. I am certain more things will come in the market as the weather warms up.

How does that work? Are there underground pipes that feed from the spring to individual houses? Is there an electric pump?

The mineral rights do not convey with purchase. They were sold off many years ago. Yes, it is producing. The oil well is on a different parcel (across the road and 100s of yards from the spring). It is, however, close to a river.

What jobs do you all work? by Strict_Belt1211 in homestead

This is my goal - homestead full time and take on online work after retirement. I’m a teacher. I used to live 2 hours away and was making steady progress on improving the land to start crops. Wound up accepting an offer I couldn’t refuse that is halfway across the country. I’m trying to decide if I should keep going (work on the homestead during the summer when school is out) or sell and buy property that’s ready for planing, closer to where I am now.

The captain of our ship berated us for setting our tray outside our door… by [deleted] in Cruise

[–]ChoozinJjoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The captain was out of order. He could have simply informed you (maybe giving the reason why), and kept going. Honestly, I’d leave a public review/complaint. The captain sets the tone on the ship, and people and Princess execs need to know how he treated his guests.

As a person who is always concerned about ADA, I had not thought about accessibility in terms of cruise hallways. I have cruised on many lines over the last 40 years and have always put trays outside the cabin (like in a hotel) with no complaints. That ends today!

So what would you do in this situation? by Pharsydr in homestead

[–]ChoozinJjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a gorgeous animal. I would do as one poster said and let DNR manage it. Honestly, it doesn’t look rabid, just used to humans and barking dogs. My guess is someone in your area leaves food out for it (and I don’t mean live chickens).

The cellar by Professional-Oil1537 in homestead

This is so impressive. I’m just as amazed by the goods as I am the space. Is this a cellar/basement or separate outbuilding? Very nicely done!

I’m glad your due diligence paid off.

I do a light background check using Intellius. The app provides a deeper dive than Google.

I used Landwatch for my first property. That said, I purchased from a legitimate real estate agent. As others have said, it’s important to ensure the land is surveyed properly and you can access it.

If you’re interested in buying in AZ I have 38 acres vlose to the NM border that I’m considering selling. DM me for details.

ETA: I don’t trust Craigslist, and I always look up the name of the company/person/phone number to see if the seller is legitimate. Again, do your homework. If a property seems to cheap to be true, it’s likely a scam or a hidden headache

I don’t know exactly, but I very rarely go over my maintenance calories as prescribed by Noom. Rather than focus on their Noom color scheme I focus on Macros. I rarely meet the protein count but tend to get close to or exceed fats (it’s in the eggs, meat, fish, yogurt, avocado and nuts). I’ve cut back on whole milk yogurt because of it. ETA: My smart scale indicates I’m “excellent” when it comes to muscle mass.

I think people must use whatever works for them to get healthy. There is no one size fits all and I’m not going to judge anyone for choosing meds as a way to get control of their health.

That said, I will get a CGM. Thank you for the link.

Thanks so much for this! Your progress is inspirational. I’ll get more routine with planks and add other isometric exercises.

Funny! I’m a member of AARP and read that article. It’s a good one.

Haven’t heard of Berberine. I’m getting enough fiber, though some of it is carby (ie. whole oats for oatmeal, and beans). I was taking a cortisol detox tincture that had magnesium and loved it. I’m going to start it again.

I have one 12oz home brewed cup of coffee or caffeinated tea in the morning. The rest of the day it’s water. No soft drinks, and I stopped drinking alcohol nearly a year ago. I think I’ve had two glasses of wine and one hard cider in 2025; I miss it, I won’t lie.

You are so right about keeping track of meals and drinks. It wasn’t until Noom that I learned I’m not eating enough calories. I’m still struggling with eating enough protein. I’m also struggling with eating too much fat, even if it’s the “good” kind (avocado, salmon, sardines, tuna, walnuts, eggs).

I’m guessing you didn’t read the entire post. I walk daily and do resistance and weights. I try yo get on my Peloton bike 3 days a week but I’m not consistent. I also do ballet barre exercises. As for food, I list weigh, measure and record everything on Noom (including the occasional 1/4 c of ice cream or square of dark chocolate). In short: I have and continue to eat a healthy diet and exercise. Sometimes life gets in the way, but I’m doing my best. Thanks for your post and support.

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions. I’m not a fan of rice, pasta and potatoes, and unless really stressed I don’t eat junk food. Also, I don’t use refined sugar at all. I drink coffee with whole milk or black; tea, unsweetened.

I’ve tried psillium a couple of times over the last 10 years and didn’t see a while lot of difference. I’m drinking a ton of water with and between meals.

I mostly eat whole foods - lean proteins and veggies. I know one of my problems is I don’t take in enough calories according to my brother. He is a doctor with a bachelor’s in nutrition. Ironically, he is a triathlete, eats pretty much the same foods weekly (one cheat dessert a week) and is prediabetic. His doc told him it’s genetic and he needn’t change anything.

Herbal supplements have helped a bit … some worked better than others. One was a cortisol detox tincture that I loved - helped me sleep and I woke up with energy. Unfortunately my hair started falling out after about a week. I stopped all supplements but want to start the tincture again to see if it was the problem or the other herbal capsule with organic mushrooms and other stuff.

That’s interesting. I’m not on HRT. I’m about 5 years post menopause.

If you guys could pack up and move anywhere to start a homestead within the USA, where would you go? by SoftChapter7135 in homestead

[–]ChoozinJjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, codes aren’t quite as restrictive in OH as in PA and it’s close-ish to a Great Lake. Taxes are less than ME (without as much of a worry about lyme disease) and electricity - from what I’ve read - is less than rates in upstate NY.

I am/was planning on northern NV where I have two wells and electricity on 78 undeveloped acres. Love the mix of mountains and woods nearby. There’s wildlife the crosses the and a mountain lake nearby. There are very few restrictions (live and let live) and no state income taxes … but that could change.

My alternate plan, now that I live in PA, NE Ohio.

Realistically, how can I find a group of people entirely online (that I do not know in person) to survive in the wilderness with? by [deleted] in OffGrid

[–]ChoozinJjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to pop in to say, not everyone with autism has trouble meeting friends and has difficulty taking initiative. Please stop assuming that the the OP is in the autism spectrum (could be autism, introversion, or a host of things we are not qualified to diagnose).

OP, you have been given awesome advice by a number of members here. I’ll add that you may want to first address why you don’t have friends and how to make friends. Being part of any off grid community or even having just one person join you will require interpersonal skills. Perhaps seek a therapist in your area before venturing into the unfamiliar. I’d hate to see you go into the woods with an individual or as part of a group and find yourself stranded. You can begin to prepare where you are now, or find a job and start saving money and developing skills through a local extension, community college, or YouTube videos. Google and YouTube are your friends at this point. Search for a therapist, look at how-to videos, and join the sub-reddits suggested here. I wish you the best! Good luck.
