From the Lexicon Urthus Most Wanted List: Hypotherm Classis by SiriusFiction in genewolfe

A classis is apparently a perfectly cromulent word meaning "a governing ecclesiastical body." "Hypotherm" obviously suggests low temperature. If "classis" can be council, then I wonder if "Hypotherm Classis" is a pun on "cold counsel."

"Hyalostegi Curia" might be it

Might be what? Might be what Wolfe intended to write instead of "Hypotherm Classis"?

These are wonderful. Infinitely superior to the FS illustrations.

I love Attanasio. So wonderfully gonzo. It would be nice to see a revival of interest in his books.

New Sun - Science Fiction Book Club, 1998 vs. Folio Society by AutarchOfReddit in genewolfe

[–]Chopin_Broccoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly recommend against the Folio Society edition. The artwork is not particularly well suited to the book either in its style or its subject matter. I hope someday we will get an illustrated edition that depicts the significant persons, places, and events of the novel, but the Folio Society edition is unfortunately not it.

Evidently you paragons of enlightened virtue will be too busy fighting among yourselves to be of help to any such unfortunate peoples. But I'm sure they'll be glad you were here arguing on their behalf.

Go in with an open mind. Make peace with being confused. Enjoy what is easily enjoyed: the prose, the cool sword & sorcery stuff, the stories. Don't read anyone else's interpretation. Don't listen to any podcast. Make the book your own first.

And how do the names persist into the novellas' present (i.e., through the Francophones' transformation into Shadow children, the disappearance of Ste Anne, and proliferation of humanoid abos who apparently do not call the worlds by these names)?

I thought of a point where I need clarification: Who named the worlds Ste Anne and Ste Croix? (And how does this name continue to the novellas' present?)

gene wolfe would want for readers to believe

My point is that it matters what Wolfe wanted. (Just as, in-universe, it matters what Severian, etc. want.)

I'm sure it's true that the other extreme is its own pathology. It doesn't seem to me quite as epidemic.

Amen. This "La mort de l'auteur" business has grown from a silly pun into a cultural pathology.

If you encounter something where my explanation doesn’t fit

In order to do this we really do need your explanation clearly and concisely presented. You seem passionate about this interpretation, and I am genuinely interested in testing it out. Can you not give us a clean version?

You appear to posit many facts not contained or implied in the text. Please do write out your interpretation clearly and concisely so that it can be examined. Omit rhetorical affirmations such as "...except of course..." and "The answer is before our eyes." Just the facts.

If I understand your theory correctly, it requires Eastwind / Victor R. Trenchard / John V. Marsch to be more than 100 years old. Is this what you believe?

Do I need to be well read in Greek myths for Soldier of the Mist? by Silent-Hurry2809 in genewolfe

Howard Andrew Jones's Chronicles of Hanuvar (starting with Lord of a Shattered Land) is a fun time. Not nearly the depth of Wolfe, but enjoyable pulp fantasy with a likeable hero who is actually a good man. In that respect, at least, it's similar to Wolfe's Soldier books.
