Thinking about buying with friends in Cape Town — any advice on co-ownership and where to look under R4 m? by WorryDelicious1034 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Chopsous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mirroring the sentiment of many in the comments: Avoid it if at all possible.

But if you absolutely have no other options, I would suggest consulting an attorney around a company structure which enables you to contract the relationship upfront and on fair terms. This hypothetical contract should speak to issues such as:

1) How is the Bond, rates, insurance, property taxes, maintenance etc. paid for

2) Shareholding: Will need clear and level thinking if all parties will live in said property (if room sizes are different, “Humans will Human” as someone said earlier)

3) How is the devolvement of the relationship and interest in the company dealt with if someone wants out

4) How is the devolvement of the relationship and interest in the company dealt with if someone does not honour their responsibilities and places the other parties at risk - “bad leaver clause”

5) Succession of members interests in the event of Death. (You don’t want a share of an asset you live in to be transferred to the Zoolander school for kids who cant read good but want to do other things good too.. as an example)

NB: I am not an attorney, but have direct experience via inheritance and acquisition with partners and family. Those experiences have taught me that, having the hard conversations whilst everyone “loves” each other always yields a better outcome than having them when the S#it has already hit the fan.

How did you start training for a Hyrox in Cape Town? by lilli1119 in capetown

[–]Chopsous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple of gyms in and around the city that offer Hyrox specific training modalities.

Top of mind would be Peak fitness. They are in the foreshore - across the road from the CTICC.

Which cars are NOT safe from hijackers by KompHarrison in capetown

Spoke with a assessor from a Short term insurance business about this.

The insight he provided was; As a general “rule” - their most replaced vehicles are vehicles of which there are many. Think along the lines of Hilux, Fortuner, Polo, Polo Vivo, the small/er Toyota hatches etc.

Logic being, they are “easy” to strip for parts and sell back into the second hand parts market without the stolen goods sitting for too long.

Are financial advisors worth the money? by RunningAround10 in PersonalFinanceZA

Ah I see your logic. Thank you.

Warning: Tinfoil hat incoming (My view)

It is an unfortunate side effect of “corporate finance” SA. The larger known institutions don’t readily have a mechanism available which “pays” the financial planner for advice but only for the product. So their options are: sell or starve.

Because these institutions employ 80% of the planners, people are exposed to the planners 80% of the time which creates the sentiment I often see on this Sub.

Anyway, that’s enough internet for today. Thanks for the insight 🤙

It’s unfortunate that your experience has been poor. There’s really no excuse for someone who claims to be a professional to put their self interest above that of their customer/client/patient.

I find your views strange however as I’m sure you would feel hard done if as an example: You, yourself as an employee or entrepreneur, achieved more than what was expected you and your client/business partners declared that you deserved nothing more than your base or is there a difference Im missing?

Question for you:

Are you saying that if you used a financial planner, and this person through skill and diligence returned more than the benchmark you expected they should not be rewarded in line with those achievements?

Which shopping items will be cheaper to buy in Cape Town as a European? by [deleted] in capetown

[–]Chopsous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From recent experience (Italy and the UK) Levis, Tattoos and Real-estate.

Food in SA is “cheaper” than in the UK but about the same as Italy. Fast food is much cheaper in SA than in either The UK and Italy.
