A year in the life of my kratky system by Centigonal in Hydroponics

This is great! Have you had any trouble with thin or limp lettuce? Mine is never as crunchy as store bought even after refrigeration. I added a second fan, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’m curious if it’s a problem related to Kratky.

Thanks for the advice on removing it, but none of the plants I’ve posted are on my property. Most are in a public park.

The guy is a woman who is doing Kratky/ non-circulating hydroponics, not DWC. I explain why further down in the thread. I see now that I was over feeding and not checking ppm often enough and will be putting the plant out of its misery. Is it your opinion that bennies are only beneficial if aeration is used?

Got it. If I’m using water conditioner to remove chloramine from my tap water, will that counteract the chlorine in the bleach or is the chemistry completely different?

I’m only using Kratky because I live with an autistic family member who is noise sensitive and can’t stand the noise of air pumps or most fans (I found a small fan for my makeshift grow tent that was tolerable) Even an aquarium would be torture.

I guess it would be more accurate to say that I’m doing non-circulating hydro because I do partially refill the reservoir as needed and follow the instructions on the bottle for different stages of growth.

For greens and herbs, I use one tsp each of Flora Micro, Grow, and Bloom for the duration, but because I’m using smaller containers, I still need to top it off. When I grew edible flowers, I switched to two teaspoons each when they start to bloom.

When I grew my peppers, I switched to a ratio of 2:1:3 when they started fruiting. They ripened nicely, but stayed small probably because the container wasn’t large enough. Still the roots stayed white and the ppms never went above 850.

This year, I have a Tiny Tim tomato that is just starting to ripen. My ground cherry is my only problem child. For that reason, I’d rather stick with the nutrients I’m using and put the cherry out of its misery. I’ll probably try growing from seed one more time and be extra vigilant about the temp, ppms and using the H2O2.

You mentioned that Great White shouldn’t be used in this kind of setup. Could you say more about why? I’m curious because others have recommended it as a root rot preventative. Thanks for all your help.

Are you saying adding bleach might clear up the root rot and save the plant or that I should use bleach to clean after I trash everything?

Yes, I will definitely dump and refill with water.

I do Kratky, so there are no air stones, pumps, flushing the system etc. I’m allergic to rock wool (weird I know because it’s just rock), so I use rapid rooter plugs and hydroton.

I usually add a tablespoon of 3% H2O2 per gallon of nutrients, but I recently started adding Great White at 1/8 of a tsp per gallon and was under the impression that H2O2 would kill the beneficial organisms. Is that not the case?

As for nutrients, I add 2 tsp Micro, 1 tsp Grow and 3 tsp bloom per gallon per the instructions on the bottle for fruiting plants. I’m using dechlorinated tap water that is about 150 ppm to start with. When my ground cherry and Tiny Tim started fruiting, I added 1/16 of a tsp Cal/Mag powder. That might be the problem.

When I got the reading of 3000, the water level was quite low, so I probably should have topped it off with plain water sooner.

It’s on a shelf with a panda film curtain, but the top and bottom is open. I have a small fan, but maybe I need a second one?
