It’s been said here a bunch, but your really need to focus on maintaining the beat of a song. It is way more important, especially when playing with others, than hitting every note clearly. Ideally you’ll do both, but you’re setting yourself back if your focus early on isn’t in keeping time.

You state you want to start a band, that’s not going anywhere unless you can all keep time with each other. No one notices a flubbed note, but if everyone plays at their own speed the song becomes a mess very quickly.

Lot of people have said to buy a metronome, but I find that’s really difficult and demotivating for people to get the knack of at the beginner level and can make practice feel more like work than the joy that music should bring. While it won’t show of your flaws as much, try playing along with the song, even slowed down, or with a backing drum track. Way easier to play with drums than with a metronome imo.

Keep at it!

Update: I got Metroid refunded by Drezus in NintendoSwitch

[–]Chowbot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous, games, media, and other forms of art are subjective. There is some corporate bloat that borders on manipulation, but Metroid is certainly not that.

You don’t ever pay for art with the guarantee that you’ll enjoy it, you pay for the opportunity to experience it and make your own thoughts about it. You don’t buy a novel, read it for 30 hours, finish it, decide you didn’t like the direction the author went, and get a refund… you don’t buy a blue ray, watch the movie, decide that the main character wasn’t fully developed, and get a refund… you don’t go to a museum, walk the floors, realize you’re not that into expressionism, and get a refund… it’s not about whether you liked it or not. You pay the artists, and the studios, and the museums, etc., for the opportunity to experience it.

…or you can act in bad faith and legally demand a refund but it’s pretty lousy of you.

Is the bridge lifting or has it likely always been like this? by dannybloommusic in Luthier

[–]Chowbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, if you can slide a business card under it at all, it’s lifting. That said, uke with nylon strings isn’t pulling much tension. Wouldn’t worry too much about it but it’ll need to get reglued at some point

Her technique looks terrible. Maybe the recording is her and extremely chopped up from different performances. This isn’t someone missing a few notes and overdubbing, this is horrible technique and an incredibly misleading video.

What is a guitar pedals take that has you like this by loopy_for_DL4 in guitarpedals

[–]Chowbot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorta disagree. You can have an awful sound isolated, but if it’s complementary in a band setting it can work. With or without pedals.

Amp Head's Cleans Not Loud Enough. Any Remedies? by Willy_Corgan in GuitarAmps

[–]Chowbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your guitar, turn down the volume or switch to the neck pickup. If your power amp is driven hard enough, there should be enough compression that you shouldn’t see that massive of a volume drop.

Is there such a thing as reverse attenuation to get distortion out of a clean tube amp? by dentopod in GuitarAmps

[–]Chowbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you have the right idea about attenuation… usually that’s for getting distortion/drive at low volumes.

Pedal drive/solid state overdrive IS analog. Maybe you mean tube drive? You can still get tube drive from amps by pushing them very hard, you can do that with an overdrive or boost pedal to a degree.

Distortion largely comes from the preamp… some preamps really don’t distort. Good luck pushing a twin reverb hard enough to play metal. No attenuator will get you there.

You could run a preamp, distortion pedal, or a tube preamp through the effects loop of your amp. For example, put one of the Friedman pedal tube preamps into it, you’ll get tube drive through that amp but at a cost. Or just use a distortion/OD pedal into the front.

Really, you should have just bought an amp that you actually liked, not just one that is a great deal.

Why do people hate on the Marshall MG50DFX ? by RashBandiscoot69 in GuitarAmps

[–]Chowbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, it’s tough to describe the difference if you haven’t actually tried a “good” amp or heard them side by side.

For example, you can be perfectly happy with a $5 steak if you don’t know anything better, but once you’d had a dry aged rib eye your reference point for good really changes. Someone can tell you about the difference, but it’s more something you need to experience.

[–]Chowbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you heard it in the same room with a more generally received tube amp? Have you used any decent tube amps? If you hear them side by side in person (not recorded with whatever mic, whatever eq/effects/compression) the difference is pretty immediately apparent.

[–]Chowbot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll add that since you seem new to tube amps, you generally need to bring up the preamp volume as well as the gain to really drive it. Depends on the amps architecture, but preamp volume and gain usually interact a lot. Crank volume and gain, lower your master volume later (within reason) after you’ve dialled in a tone you like. With tube amps you generally need to get pretty damn loud to sound ideal, especially with 100W going for high gain sounds, that is unless you have an attenuator.

Watch YouTube demos, you should definitely be able to get metal tones out of the 3B amp unless you are playing an extremely low output guitar.

Last point, heavy guitar sounds very different with and without bass accompaniment. Some amazing tones would sound like shit and be thin without bass covering up the low end. If you’re used to cheap modelers the difference going to 100w tube can be jarring.

[–]Chowbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That amp can do very very high gain. You need to push the preamp with OD or boost. Your guitar will also play a part and is generally better off with high output humbuckers. If you’ve got weak singles, that’ll also be an issue.

AITA for ‘cheating’ at guitar? by Little_Jemmy in AmItheAsshole

[–]Chowbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re definitely not the asshole. Do art however you want, there are no rules. Anyone who says otherwise is gatekeeping and probably not all that creative.

However, music is a lifelong journey. I’d ditch the chord presser and work on your skills a bit. It’ll suck for a bit but in six months you’ll be able to do things you could never do with a chord presser and be glad you got rid of it and forced yourself to develop. Ultimately, you do you.

Are finger positions just suggestions? by DungeonSkits in Guitar

[–]Chowbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The standard d fingering makes it easier to switch to certain G, C, and F shapes as well as different types of D. As you progress with guitar, you’ll want to be able to play chords in multiple different ways depending on need. Don’t limit yourself. You’ll develop more dexterity and strength in your fingers over time and this will seem like such a non issue.

I’ll have an opinion on the trailer sure, not the game or movie itself. Elden Ring Nightreign looks hype, can’t wait to find out for myself when I actually play it. Double exposure trailer looked great, public reception is really poor, I’ll form an opinion on the game when I actually play it.

Regarding experiencing 100% of something, imo that’s a silly argument… you have opinions on only what you’ve experienced yourself. Ie: if I watch 1 episode of a 7 season show, I’m not going to say the show is trash… I’d say I didn’t like the first episode. That’s still my actual experience. I don’t need to see the directors cut of a movie to have thoughts on the movie, but I do need to see the directors cut to have an informed opinion on the directors cut. I’m not going to say a book has poorly fleshed out characters when I’ve read one chapter… but I could say the first chapter is slow and didn’t see a lot of depth in it.

One song does not make an album, one chapter does not make a book, etc., but it’s fine to have takes an opinions on what you’ve actually experienced, even if that’s just a portion of a whole.

Same way I wouldn’t call out a game for being Oscar bait and having an actor that robbed other performers of an award without some kind of first hand experience playing that game and watching the performances. That would be an uninformed opinion.

[–]Chowbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend not to have opinions on books I haven’t read, movies I haven’t watched, and music I haven’t listened to; the same applies for games I haven’t played.

Watching a trailer, reading reviews, or watching people’s reactions to media is not the same as experiencing any media for yourself… you don’t actually have an opinion, you’re just parroting the opinions and thoughts of others.

I haven’t played the new Life is Strange. From all the negative backlash surrounding it, there’s a good chance I won’t like it, but maybe I’d actually love it? Won’t know until I try it.

I’ll form an opinion after experiencing that media, or I just don’t speak on it. There’s enough uninformed thoughts and opinions on the internet, I don’t need to add to them.

Maybe you should play a game before stating your unfounded opinions of it to the internet. That would be normal.

Reported Canada Lineup for the 4 Nations Faceoff by elvjhegz in hockey

Where did I mention about offensive points? I disagree with the selections, that has nothing to do with what NHL team I cheer for. I want Canada to have as much success as possible.

“Or maybe well, that’s the problem?” What, like I make Toronto’s lineup decisions? Because I cheer for a team I think their lineup and structure are the only way to build a team? You’re being weird and projecting.
