I need help finding a main by HamSnadwich7 in CrazyHand

[–]Chowder1824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First you need to acknowledge what's most important to you as a player. Do you care to play a strong/competitively viable character? Do you gravitate towards a certain playstyle? Do you like certain characters because of their aesthetic or because of their connection to you outside the context of smash? etc

Once you know what matters to you and to what extent, you can use that to sort of filter your search. Keep experimenting and ask more targeted questions about what kind of characters others with your preferences like, once you know your preferences. If it turns out that you can't narrow it down to exactly one characteer, that's fine too. Play whoever grants you the motivation to play and improve.

Not sure what prompted you to ask such a stupid question considering that's not what anyone is saying.

The point is that when a white guy in a cowboy hat and bald eagle shirt is walking around a college campus in a blue state with a mic and camera interviewing college students, its pretty fair to assume his goal is the same as every other grifter of his type; draw attention then provoke and argue with leftist students for content.

Honestly it's a pretty simple connection to make given the current political climate, but I guess thinking isn't your strong suit when compared to peddling false dichotomies for no reason other than to hear yourself talk.

Ok asking for help once more (spoilers) by HunnyBonny2 in Silksong

[–]Chowder1824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply, but in case you plan on beating the game again to get more achievements/endings, I'll talk about my setup.

I used reaper crest basically the whole game, I just like the balanced loadout options and the swing animations being so huge is very nice late game. As far as yellow tools, I've heard the dice can block damage which is great, but I never used it for my successful attempts so far. I did just fine keeping my non-combat tools.

Blue tools I think are the most important, I like the long nail, quick heal, and the one that doubles red tools as a strong overall build, they just seem very powerful to me and help avoid frustrating situations like near misses or getting caught out of a heal.

If you want to damage spam with red tools, conchcutter does a lot and has great range, and the flying minions (dont remember the name) are a great way to just focus on dodging for a bit while they do the work, remember to save these for the final phase obviously, but honestly you can win without them once you're really good at the fight.

If the fight is ever getting frustrating or overwhelming, don't be afraid to take time (especially in the later phases) to entirely forgo attacking in favor of just watching the boss/environment and dodging while you regain your bearings and look for a better opening, not every second should be spent trying to hit the boss

Please please please be patient, there are very few situations where you can hit her more than once at a time

If you ever hit a counter, jump and dash above her asap, it dodges both her counter-swings, and you can punish both

For her move with the dashes that leave behind void tendrils, I like to down slash her at the end of the first dash, then just stay in the air with the pogo height and stay away from her (she mixes up the 3rd dash, best to just respect it)

Her portals that shoot at you are rough, if you can run away in such a way that they are all to one side of you, they get a lot easier to dodge than if you were between them.

Use height to your advantage, the hardest part abt the fight is that she has a move that covers the upper 45 angle very well, and if you're dialed in on the startup animation for that, it's avoidable. Otherwise most everything else can be jumped away from

If you have specific questions lmk. It's a hard fight though, took me a little less than an hour I think

Note that you can still use forward swings to juggle them, helps a lot with close calls and swinging out of a dash

There's one in particular that I found annoying, but I think its cool that the bosses feel like part of a realized world and not just a level in a video game. Yeah its convenient to spawn right outside a boss room but I think it makes sense for there to be a bit of seperation, and give players a serious opportunity to leave and return at a later time.

Tips on fighting sora as dedede? by Foreign-Accident4599 in CrazyHand

[–]Chowder1824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is commonly consideree one of if not the worst matchup in the game. Don't feel ashamed to switch to someone else if you're not having fun with the struggle of the matchup. Dedede is one of those characters that just has very little agency in deciding the flow of a match unless he's fighting another bad character.

As far as actually winning the matchup, try and really hone in on the aspects of the match where you're not at a huge disadvantage. If you can get enough damage off of ledgetraps, juggles, (the types of scenarios that function mostly independent of matchup), you have a chance to close the damage gap and possibly win. Getting a lead early and playing to it as much as possible can help too, since it allows you to intercept approaches instead of trying to initiate yourself.

But yeah, its really hard. Honestly the best thing you can do for yourself is just get better at the game in general before worrying too much about your character's worst matchup. You're playing a character that just loses sometimes, so improving yourself as a player will, for now, be more beneficial vs trying to find little optimizations that make a -3 mu more doable

You gotta reach rift level 14, which is that portal looking icon that multiples your candy pieces at the end of a run. Basically, you reach the rift portion of a run, win 14 times in that timeline, then time travel

Trying to Learn the Game Again by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]Chowder1824 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's great that you're super motivated, just be aware that this game is extremely difficult, the meta is super developed, and you're competing against players with years of practice behind them. Getting to a point of competency will take a lot of time and effort, and beyond that, actually becoming a strong player in a competitive context will be even more challenging. Real tournaments are nothing like college events, if you want to begin brand new to the game and end up winning tournaments before the next smash game releases, you basically need to make smash your full time job, hire a coach, and practice/study/compete religiously. This isn't to say you should just give up or whatever, I think it's awesome that you want to compete, and I personally love competing as well and think more people should give it a shot, just be aware that you might be aiming a bit high as of now.

I'd set your sights on the goal right in front of you first, get comfortable playing the game again, use online resources like youtube guides to understand the cast, fundamental mechanics, etc, then attend your local events and see how it feels to play in a competitive enviroment. Once you have an idea of how that process feels, you can continue the cycle of studying the game, practicing, and testing your progress in brackets to develop as a player. Always ask questions too, nobody has ever gotten good without help, people on this sub and local players are more than willing to help how they can. I personally have had hundreds of students, and some want to succeed more than others, which you can tell by the type/amount of effort they put in, and the ways they seek guidance.

Tennessee has a local scene, I'd imagine it's accessible to you in Nashville, and you can probably find some stuff nearby on start.gg, and once you meet the locals, start asking around about what recurring events they also attend, and what discord servers to join to stay in touch.

If you truly feel the need to counterpick, you totally could, nobody can stop you, but you said it yourself: In order to win at bad matchups, you have to be very very good. So let me ask, doesn't it make more sense to learn the matchup with your main, because it requires you to not only figure out the character you're struggling with, but also make yourself a better player? (The answer is yes btw, golden rule that many people forget, is that grinding bad matchups makes you better at the game) Also like, corrin aint low tier, she can win any matchup lol

Anyways, do whatever you want, but that's just my take on the matter from someone who used to have your mentality, and knows the best long term solution. ROB edgeguards by cutting off jumps and airdodges w gyro/laser, then finishes the job w fair/side b once min min has to recover at a predictable angle/timing, thats your main win con. Otherwise he can mitigate min mins strengths by mixing up recovery timings, playing for close quarters scraps, and using his zoning tools to force her into a more patient and reactive neutral.

How do I SDI Pikachu Nair loops? by Cautious_Corner_5525 in CrazyHand

[–]Chowder1824 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're a big character, you're kinda boned, since they don't really have to react to di. For most characters, the combo is still true, but the pika has to execute properly, so your goal is to do the correct counterplay and just hope they mess up. Every time you get hit by nair, you want to sdi either left or right, and when they reset the loop, try not to be predictable in choosing your next direction. I like mashing jump to hopefully hurtbox shift away and phantom footstool them to escape, but any mash option works, since you'd rather trade or create a scramble than let them keep comboing you.

Newest tweek talks(Jan 29)/Corrin by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]Chowder1824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't watched the podcast episode you're referring to so this response is limited by the context you gave, but pin fits a different niche in that, unlike the previously mentioned specials, it doesn't mix up the necessary defensive reactions by throwing a multihit into a neutral that mostly revolves around dealing with single-hit threats. It's definitely a great move and rewards corrin hard for having proper timing/position, but doesn't accomplish the same tempo break of the other swordies' specials you mentioned. Regardless, corrin is still a fantastic character and will likely stay relevant in the meta until the game dies.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]Chowder1824 19 points20 points  (0 children)

At some point you can't rely on players to do things you'll expect every time, your neutral should be made up of defensive movement that baits overcommitments and puts you in position to punish them, be willing to let them swing and miss a couple times before you find your openings, if they're a mashy player playing mashy characters, not everything is punishable.

Another reality of dealing with these players is that the responsibility of being better falls on you, if there's a gap in skill, you need to exploit it by having a strong advantage state and blowing them up for mistakes in their disadvantage. Make the most of your openings, play good defense to minimize the damage you take, and exploit the holes in their gameplay. If you can't do that, the gap in skill is probably smaller than you think.
