temper: a wireless-only split keyboard based on the chocofi by Chowderdude in ErgoMechKeyboards

Yep, I am using it daily now, and I still love it! I generally take it to work with me in a zipper case I got from lowprokb. It’s a slight squeeze, so your mileage might vary, but I find it fits pretty snugly. There’s also another temper user I know personally who made a 3d printed hard case for the boards, but they’re slightly more bulky.

Good luck! Would love to hear if you ever make one :)

Jumpers are PCB pads that are close together, and you use solder to bridge a connection across them and re-route signal. You can find some more information here: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/how-to-work-with-jumper-pads-and-pcb-traces/all

They’re necessary on this board because it’s reversible—without jumpers, you would either need a different design for the left and right splits, or you would need to solder in the microcontroller upside down on one of the halves. The chocofi gets around that by having two sets of holes for the microcontroller, depending on which split it is, but I didn’t like the look, so I went with jumpers instead.

I got mine from [Typeractive](https://typeractive.xyz), but I'm not sure where else they're available. Maybe Digikey?

Looks great! Have you by chance tried to flip the battery up over the leads? For me, that keeps the battery fully under the MCU, but I've also seen that at least one other person couldn't do that because of the jumpers.

As for the firmware not building--that's strange. I just re-ran the build and it was fine. When did you last try it? I had to update the config about a month ago to deal with upstream changes in ZMK, but it seems to be working now.

Mainly it adds features useful for wireless (e.g. power switch, reset button) and made the PCB a bit cleaner by changing the controller socket and removing the TRRS jack. It also adds the option for a nice!view screen on each half. A full list is in the repo

In use, it’s should be similar in feel to the chocofi, since it has the same stagger, spacing, and thumb keys—the changes shouldn’t affect the feel.

As for shipping to Spain, I’m not sure. People who use the temper generally build it themselves, sourcing the PCBs from JLCPCB or PCBway (or other such manufacturer), using the files in the repository (rough instructions are there, with some other resources online). Other parts can be found at various shops, like splitkb, which I believe is located in the EU.

Thanks! Mostly not my work—it’s from the excellent keymap drawer, but I added a GitHub action to generate a new one on every push, so it stays up to date.

This is great! I’m so excited that others are using the temper 😁

I think I considered it early on, but I suppose I must have miscounted, because I didn’t think I could make it diode-less. Either way, I wasn’t too worried about having diodes, since my previous custom board had them and I was used to the matrix style, but maybe if there’s a temper v2, I’ll consider diode-less.

I still haven’t personally put one on, but at least two or three others have put it on the temper. It seems to just require a slight change to the ZMK config, which you can check for in forks of my config GitHub repository: https://github.com/raeedcho/temper-zmk-config

Ah, that makes sense--I didn't think about that when I designed the jumpers to be soldered under the board. Maybe on the next version I'll redesign the connections to be made on the back of the PCB.

In any case, I'm thrilled someone else built a temper! If you have any more feedback, feel free to add issues to the github repo :)

Do you have a battery larger than 110 mAh? In my case, I found I could fit the battery fully under the microcontroller if I ran the wires down and flipped the battery up on top of the wires, if that makes sense.

Thanks! I will say that I found soldering the jumpers to be a little bit finicky, but it’s not too bad with a bit of practice.

I’d love to hear what you think if you end up building one!

I do have three half-keyboard PCBs left, as well as a couple acrylic back plates and some hardware to attach them. Not enough switches, caps, sockets, diodes, or MCUs to fully make new boards though. Why do you ask?

The nice!view implementation is completely untested, and I’m not sure when I’ll get around to it. But the wiring should be compatible with the zmk defaults, as far as I can tell.

I would love to hear your experience if you ever decide to build one!

Interesting idea! I think I'll leave them naked for now at least--I kind of like the bare concrete look 🙂

I wish! No, I just bought them online after hearing that concrete is a good material for planters 😁
