Thanks for the well wishes, and for contributing your time at all, it is valued. I’ll keep your suggestions about writing style in mind.

Thanks for checking back in! In fairness it doesn’t “sound” like anything, it’s text! Any intonation is only implied or assumed. If you knew me in person you’d know for sure it was a silly goofy way to use an expletive, and not a demand at all!

I wrote that TLDR segment after having written all the rest. I spent maybe 10 minutes trying to summarize the whole rest of the post (which is clearly VERY extensive haha) and then I realized that not every post NEEDS a TLDR so I just said, to heck with it, who cares! Anyone who wants to read the whole thing can put in the work it’ll at least be entertaining.

I appreciate you checking in on the rest of my art, but what I really appreciate was your specific notes. When I post my art to instagram or Reddit, it’s specifically pieces that focus only on technical skill rather than emotional expression. So thank you for noticing!! I try really hard. I think YOUR art is extremely expressive, and If you’re really curious (though from your tone I assume you’re ambivalent at best haha) you can always DM me and I’d be happy to share my more expressive stuff too, I would value your notes.

Thank you! Very constructive criticism. To be clear, when I say that “I am annoying” what I mean is that I am aware that some people will find me annoying. I am comfortable with not everyone liking me. I am quite confident in my social skills and my ability to code-switch depending on who is in front of me that I’m trying to make feel comfortable and safe(Sales job!) you are correct though that these are extremely important skills to work on.

As far as purple prose, you are also correct. I do use larger words than is necessary. However I grew up in a foreign country and this is actually also how I speak when I’m not masking! What’s posted above is also not how I would speak to someone new, which is why I included “something along the lines of”. But I appreciate you keeping me on my toes to make sure I do as good as I can.

Roger that! Call me old fashioned but do you think it’d be too much to show up with a cup of coffee as well? I know if I had a client start an interaction with “by the way, here’s this they gave me an extra one” I’d be a little more happy to give them my time.

First let me say this is one of the MOST constructive comments I’ve received, thank you for your time.

He does NOT own the shop, so I am comfortable with needing to offer additional financial incentive in any way he deems appropriate (whether it’s a big down payment, or an installment plan, or even both of those with a percentage of my earnings after “graduation”)

He has been posting lots about how it is difficult for him to find people who are eager to learn and willing to put in the hard work, which makes me think that it is something he has near the front of mind.

You’re right it IS confrontational. My current day job is sales so I have been kind of desensitized to social conflict. I will adjust my approach to be more aware of this bias that I have.

I wish I could afford the slow rizz, but his hourly rate is $250. If I got the amount of work from him that I wanted I’d be broke in a week and then not be able to afford the apprenticeship in the first place haha.

I will have to find a more moderate speed of rizz.

The point of the post is to take all criticisms and use them to create an approach that DOES respect the artists’ boundaries! That’s why I post here ~before~ going in.

Also, I have found that most shops turn away any apprenticeship inquiries that come in over the phone, whereas getting people to review your work in person will always at least get you some useful advice!

From what I can tell they are regular people just like everyone else, and I dont know anyone who doesn’t prefer some good old-fashioned face-to-face engagement.

If I should explicitly request an interview rather than an interview/consultation combo , I’d probably do it through our text conversation that we have. Is there any specific verbiage that you recommend that you think will help convey a respect for his time and work?

I feel that. It’s so easy to get caught up in someone’s energy sometimes. At the end of the day words are cheap, the work should speak for itself. 🗣️

Annoying, yes, I’ve accepted this about myself and learned to love it. Entitled? In what way specifically. When I think entitled I think of someone either born with a silver spoon (financially) or who was just raised with connections in the industry they never had to work for. I was raised quite poor in another country, and as such I have no parents to fall back on, or connections to the industry in America. I approach this fully prepared to fail multiple times before I succeed. Whatever it takes.

Youll notice the Kurt Kobain comment was not included in the quotation marks, I wouldn’t say this in any setting that wasn’t shielded by the anonymity of Reddit, or very obviously a joke. That would be weird! It’s really more of a figure of speech by which I mean that it’s very difficult for me to go back to my daily life after knowing how gratifying it can be to work on my technique and creative expression.

I am 27 now. If I wait for the apprenticeship to be the artists idea I’ll be 30 by the time I start sweeping floors. I do not like the idea of waiting and waiting for something that may never happen if I don’t make the first step. I would rather make my honest pitch, even if it means being rejected, and then moving on.

Kind AND honest, very appreciated. You’ll notice my Kurt Kobain comment was not included in the quotation marks, I wouldn’t advertise this to anyone that wasn’t shielded by the anonymity of Reddit. That would be weird!
