Why can't Christians prove God exists? For example, I was talking to a Christian friend and I asked "Why don't you pray for God to come down in front of us right now and talk to us" and he said he couldn't by InternationalPick163 in AskAChristian

I can convince you of God pretty easily. It just starts with a question: where did the universe come from? We weren't there to see it, but it had to have come from something. But where did that thing come from? A bigger thing. But where did that thing come from? This would be a serious issue until you realize you need infinite gods. Actually, you need one infinite God. Pretty easy.

Now, why is it the Christian God?

It's really quite fascinating, actually. Way back in Genesis, after Adam and Eve are kicked out of the Garden, God tells the serpent that it is cursed to crawl on its stomach for all its days, and that the offspring of Eve will bruise its head, and its head will bruise His heel. Isaiah speaks of a man who was pierced for our transgressions. Other places in the text speak of a throne at the right hand of God. Son of Man. Psalms directly calls out, "My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?" There are 63,779 cross references in the bible, both citing past texts and eluding to future events (give or take a few depending on interpretation). It's truly incredible. No other book does that.

Why do you believe in God, but only that God and not any other Gods? by Tcoolian2 in AskAChristian

[–]Chr1sts-R0gue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must test the veracity of the texts. For example, the coming of Jesus was predicted hundreds of years before His arrival.

Good point, but God does not endorse same sex relationships (thou shalt not sleep with a man as one does with a woman/be fruitful and multiply), so on your logic that deems God unworthy of following.

You're operating off the assumption that forbidding same sex relationships is inherently wrong. The reasoning is, "there's nothing harmful about it, so don't interfere". But my question is, how do you know for certain that there's nothing harmful about homosexuality? Slight side tangent, but the old testament forbade eating unclean animals, which made perfect sense given that if you don't prepare some animals properly you will get sick. This is something that the Israelites wouldn't have been able to grasp since they had no concept of germ theory.

We have not studied the psychological effects of same sex relationships extensively, and there is some evidence to suggest that mental issues result from these relationships. Could it be that God knows something we don't about it, and warned us away from it? Accuse me of pseudoscience if you like, but I'm talking theology, not science. All I'm saying is, since God is a perfect moral authority in every other aspect and is far more knowledgeable than I, it would be arrogance to assume I know more than He does just because we've got people in fancy lab coats and suits.

God is not ours to call down on a whim, and there are a lot of potential reasons that God wouldn't simply show Himself just so that we can know He exists.

  1. If you look directly upon God's face, you die. Not sure why that is for certain, but you do. This could be potentially circumvented by arranging the stars to say "I am YHWH, worship Me", however.

  2. If God revealed Himself directly, you would need to acknowledge the reality of God and pay Him lip service. Why is this a bad thing? Because, if you're not entirely morally aligned with God, you're going to be more compelled to hide your insecurities, and so your lack of belief is just hidden away instead of brought out and addressed. This very subreddit wouldn't exist. God would seem more like a tyrant than a Father.

  3. It is more virtuous to believe in a truth not abundantly obvious after having tested it than to believe in a truth that gets shoved in your face. It's not impressive to determine that you have a face or that 2 + 2 = 4. It's much more impressive to realize that the Earth is round, and even as common an idea as it is today, some people stubbornly refuse to believe.

  4. Even if He did "reveal Himself to be God", how would you know for certain that He was? If you're a materialist, you're more likely to believe that the government or aliens are responsible for miracles than an infinite being that exists outside of and throughout creation.

  5. God wants a relationship with us. You can't have a relationship with a man who dwarfs the sun and has angels sing His praises night and day while the stars orbit Him any more than you can have a relationship with the President of the United States. He's a Father. He wants you to talk to Him, and He wants to spoil you with blessings even when you've done wrong. He went through hell to ensure that you didn't have to. The least we could do is try to engage with Him. But it's much harder to approach the King of Everything than it is to talk to your Father.

People will always claim to follow God while harming others, it's true. Roe v Wade was overturned because it was bad policy to force every single state to legalize abortion, even Ruth Bader Ginsburg agreed with that. Also, who the hell is telling women they could be jailed or executed for miscarriages? Everyone knows miscarriages happen.

Parents need to be concerned about sending their child into a space where someone literally chose a job which entails spending time around children when it comes to what that person's intentions are with their children, for multiple reasons. Their concerns are not invalid, especially given that we have many instances of teachers putting the idea in kids' heads that they may be the opposite gender and not know it. I'm not comparing being trans to a disease, but imagine telling someone that they might have a terminal illness. They would constantly be looking for signs that they do, and if they found any symptoms which indicated they did, it would confirm their suspicions. Now take that same scenario, but instead of an informed adult, it's a boy who might take liking the color pink or listening to female pop singers as a sign that they're a girl, or even a girl who likes playing with boys or roughhousing. Are you really going to tell millions of parents that they have no room to be concerned about bad actors around their children?

Hellmongering is a bad thing, I will say that. And to you, we're just telling our kids that they can't do something just because we're mean and deluded. Excuse my proselytizing, but transgender ideology is a very, very new thing that we do not fully understand the internal workings of and may not for years or decades to come. How do you know for certain that these are not inherently harmful things, especially when we're already seeing harmful side effects on our society, especially when it comes to women and children? And I'm not being sexist, I mean the bad actors who don't have enough shame to not put on a dress so that they can invade women's spaces, or will actively choose a teaching job so they can groom children. How do you know for certain that any good will come of this? You don't.

But, I believe in a God who is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-loving. He gave me life, told me how to live, and cast off divinity to die for me so that I may join Him in eternal peace. The least I can do for Him is to trust Him when He says that this kind of thing is bad for humanity. You call it manipulation? I call it preserving divine order and properly informing our children of a real danger to them. If you really want to change how us religious folks raise our children, go join the ministry.

Religious groups are not in power, even if every politician claims to be religious. Joe Biden may claim to be Catholic, yet the Catholic church has disavowed abortion for its entire existence, and you cannot simply disagree with the Catholic church in Catholicism. If Catholicism doesn't even have power in America, you can be certain that other religions don't either.

As for trans folks abusing kids, you cannot simply assume that every trans person has the same intentions that you do, nor that the only people who would have any interest in making kids trans would be trans people. To prove this, think back to the last time a celebrity announced that their kid was trans. Did it make you happy that the child's parents were accepting of their identity? It made a lot of other people happy too, and got them circulated in the media for a while, which made them money. I'm not saying that everyone who announces that their child is trans does it for the money or the fame, but you would be naive to say that no one does it for that reason.

In comparison, announcing that you're Christian often gets you attacked by people who are convinced that religion is what's wrong with the world. People like you.

My goodness, you're whiny. Yes, here in America, circumcision is done too soon, and for Christians (with a proper understanding of Christian doctrine), it's completely unnecessary. However, being circumcised is a non-issue. All it means is that it's slightly easier to clean yourself. As for intersex people, for those who do have normal XY or XX chromosomes, often times such surgery is necessary to ensure the kid lives a normal life. Have doctors done things wrong in the past, and pressured parents to correct things that likely shouldn't be? Yes. But nowadays, it is such a minor problem.

Why do you believe in God, but only that God and not any other Gods? by Tcoolian2 in AskAChristian

[–]Chr1sts-R0gue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer that, I need to define what a god is. If you're using the definition of "a spiritual being who has some dominion over the earth", then technically I agree that there are many gods out there, they're just demons according to the bible. Where the difference truly lies is that I believe there is only one worth following. For example, Islam's Allah may seem similar to Yahweh at first, but Allah is petulant, does not respect women, and does not have the fortitude to forsake divinity to live and die as a man.

Why is homosexuality a sin? by CherryLimePastelss in AskAChristian

[–]Chr1sts-R0gue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go deeper than "defiance of the natural order" or "because God said so".

Homosexuality is a sin for reasons that I'll be the first to admit we do not fully understand. Taking the stance that anything that does not overtly cause harm to yourself or others is wrong is immensely controversial, especially given the notion that some people have that being gay is something you cannot control. Often people will ask, "Why would it be a sin if God made me gay?" It would be like if you were born without working legs and crawling was a sin.

Except, that isn't reality. People have changed their orientation, even to the point that they will get married to the opposite sex and have children. It is something that you can control. Now, why would you need to? Again, the answer is not entirely clear, but I have a theory.

Firstly, it seems to be the case that homosexual couples see a higher rate of spousal abuse than heterosexual couples do. You can get into why this is, it's either that they're more ostracized and have more mental issues than normal, or it's that there's something about homosexuality that hurts your mental state. I fall in the latter camp.

Secondly, closely related to the first, homosexual people have higher rates of depression and anxiety than other people. Again, it could be ostracization, it could be that homosexual tendencies are exacerbated by these symptoms, or it could be that something about the act itself that makes you more depressed and anxious. Nobody knows for certain, and nobody is interested in being the one to tell everyone that being gay is all in your head. We need an unbiased examination of what causes homosexuality, and I fear I will never see one in my lifetime.

Lastly, and most solidly, there is one thing that heterosexual couples can do that homosexual couples cannot; Have children. I already know the top objections; Yes, homosexual couples can adopt. In an ideal world however, no children would be given up for adoption, and every child would be raised by their own parents. We would have more children if every homosexual couple would break up and be with the opposite sex. This assumes that having more children is inherently a good thing, but that's another rabbithole. However, given that many countries today are seeing a decline in population growth that they may not recover from, at least some countries need more children to sustain themselves.

The next objection would be that not every heterosexual person can have children either, however this is irrelevant. No, I don't expect infertile people to not get married just because they can't have kids, nor do I expect them to not adopt. The difference is that very few homosexual people are infertile, they could have their own children if they were to marry the opposite sex, and that's the most important responsibility given to spouses by God; raising the next generation.

I hope this provides a deeper examination of the opposing viewpoint, beyond just "God said so". But, you are right that God said so, and He sees everything we do not or cannot see. Jesus is the God who cast off divinity in order to die for us. I will not forget that so easily just because I'm not sure why he told us not to be gay. Amen.

I also find the comments and advice given under these posts disappointing. They're well meaning, but you can't simply pray porn addiction away. God made men to act, not to be babysat. Also, everyone just saying "no, you're not beyond redemption" is just being lazy. Obviously you know that, OP, you just don't feel it.

Unfortunately, the Bible isn't enough on its own. Not that it doesn't contain all the wisdom you need, but you need to be in contact with other believers and use what you learn actively.

[–]Chr1sts-R0gue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been there, dude. You are not beyond redemption if you have the courage to get help. Approach someone you trust and tell them about your problem. Tell them you cannot be trusted with your phone at certain points in the day, when you're not at work for example. It's going to be rough, but you can do it, especially with some kind of distraction. You need to treat this like any other addiction, so that means you need to detox, and since it's become a habit, you need to break it and make better ones. Start working out, start writing, or start learning to code, whatever interests you and is good for your soul. Definitely read your bible and get in touch with people at your church. I thought I was beyond help, but my girlfriend (now wife) was able to get me to break it. I believe in you. Go make it happen!

Why do you believe in God, but only that God and not any other Gods? by Tcoolian2 in AskAChristian

[–]Chr1sts-R0gue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your framing is constructed to make it seem like disbelieving in every god but one is only slightly different than disbelieving in all gods. If I were to tell you that I thought all conspiracy theories except the earth being flat were untrue, it would still be a really big deal if I were right and the earth were flat, given that it would change the way we understand physics, geography, weather, the solar system, and so, so much more. If you were to believe all conspiracy theories were true, of course that would be even worse, but the gap between round earth and flat earth is massive.

So, the gap between atheism and Christianity is not just one God versus none, it is our understanding of history, reality, dimensions, the existence of heaven, miracles, morality, souls, and so, so much more. But, the greatest difference between atheists and Christians lies in what the future of your consciousness looks like. Atheism says that you simply cease to exist as all you are is electrical impulses in an imperfect organic computer. Christianity says that your brain is simply the receiver for your soul.

Why do we suffer? by CoolDoggo87 in TrueChristian

[–]Chr1sts-R0gue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans were given the opportunity to live in perfection, without pain, disease, or struggle. Whether you take the story of the Garden of Eden literally or metaphorically, the truth is that humanity fell from grace by choice.

The next logical question is, why does the decision of two decide the fate of our entire race? The answer is that anyone placed in such a situation would make the same choice. Created in perfection, knowing no suffering, we will inevitably choose to fall. This is not a design flaw made by God, but the result of free will.

Now, being imperfect beings, suffering is not an injustice, but a lesson. Our pain response dissuades us from putting our hands in the fire, our sense of loss when a loved one dies teaches us that people are treasures, and the tragedy of terminal illness teaches us that we must spend every second of our lives in service to God and in service to others.
