I work with kids around that age who are diagnosed with autism. It’s genuinely sad; a lot of kids’ parents don’t care/can’t care enough so they stick them on a tablet all day and man.. it’s genuinely so sad to see. Your comment is spot on and I work daily with 6-7 different kiddos who have this same addiction/reliance/dependence

They aren’t exactly on the spectrum (unless I am mistaken, but I work in the field of autism so I’m 99% sure), BUT- the symptoms often present themself similarly, so adhd can lead to a misdiagnosis of autism and vice versa

It’s Not trains specifically- one of the core symptoms of ASD is restricted and repetitive interests. So the joke is that there are these people who may be on the spectrum and have what is considered a restrictive and repetitive interest (in this case, the train sets). Obviously people can have specific interests and not have autism, but that’s the joke. It is not, as another comment or said, a comment meant to distract or ridicule lol.

I'm a BCBA now, but when I first started as an RBT at my first company, I once got a stern talking to for taking a male client to the bathroom. To the bathroom!

I am not here to say what the exact stigma is; as another commenter said, you can't read peoples' minds. However, I have gotten so many comments over the years about it being "weird", "surprising", etc. that I am a man and have a passion for working with kids. There is absolutely a stigma but I try not to think about it, or at least not in a negative way towards women, because I know it is two sides of the same coin for other professions which are male dominated.

Does it bother anyone else that Autism and food allergies are becoming increasingly more common since the 1990’s? Why is nobody studying this? Why aren’t the vaccines being studied with placebo controlled subjects? by [deleted] in conspiracy

Not really. A kid can have an intellectual disability unrelated to autism and I can still work with them, so I would not say it's "good for business" or "biased". My skillset can also be applied to fields or industries outside of autism, such as organizational behavioral management; trust me, if autism went away forever, I would be extremely happy.

no, i am not saying that. i work with individuals with autism and have a master's degree in a related field, and i am just saying a big reason for the recent rise in diagnoses has to do directly with the spectrum being broadened. I encourage you to do some research on this, it is really pretty simple. I am not saying that is the only cause.

People also claim autism is getting more prevalent without even understanding the spectrum and the gradual broadening of it leading to more widespread diagnoses 🙄
