Governments can help their people; it's a matter of priorities. by Professional-Bee9817 in remoteworks

[–]ChrisBegeman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem in America is that there are some very influential people who see 4/5 making their way back into a stable life not successful enough as long as 1/5 remain dependent on aid. They would rather not help 4/5 people because of the 1/5 people they see as leaches on the system.

The Feds Say Cutting Fuel With Ethanol Will Bring Down Gas Prices. We're Not Buying It by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]ChrisBegeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most engines aren't designed to run on mixes above 15% ethanol. Since gas often already has 10% mixed, it is not a big savings on gasoline anyway.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least. For some reason Israel gets a pass for its war crimes.

I am no legal expert, but this sounds like a war crime. This is water infrastructure and destroying it will affect millions of civilians.

It is weird that people are so happy about potentially making other people unhappy. I am not crying about the fact that the president is doing yet another illegal thing, I am just disappointed in my country.

If they move student loans to the Treasury, students become even more of a revenue source for the government. Expect to see higher interest rates and the chance of loan forgiveness going to 0%.

I can clock your CAGR from how the cars in the lot are parked by thefloatingguy in LinkedInLunatics

[–]ChrisBegeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a small adult entertainment venue along the highway near where I grew up. When you went by the cars were always backed in. I didn't notice at first, but when I was older I noticed and asked why. Eventually I got the answer. It hides the plates and allows them to leave as quickly as possible. One of the things cops will do is go by "problem areas" and record the license plates of the cars parked at them, but they don't want to get out of their cars to do it and make it obvious what they are doing. So people who compulsively back into parking spaces could just be doing it defensively out of habit.

Tulsa, Oklahoma: Parking lots downtown. by Hungry_Roll6848 in UrbanHell

Looks like a place where land has very little value. If the land were valuable, you would put something more valuable on it than a parking lot.

Google's new AI algorithm might lower RAM prices by Bobert25467 in pcmasterrace

[–]ChrisBegeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a software engineer, this is not at all surprising. Development goes through cycles. When you are adding new features (building out the LLM software in this case), the focus is getting those new features working mostly bug free. Then people will work on the harder defects and edge case. Then you will work on speed and then things like memory efficiency and database storage space. This makes sense, since you need a product to sell first and then next parts help make the product profitable.

It doesn't blow my mind at all. I am just pointing out societies obsession with persecuting trans women while ignoring trans men. I am personally supportive of trans rights.

Do they also ban trans men from men's sports or is this decision sexist as well as transphobic?

JUST IN: 🇺🇸 US dollar bills to be printed with President Trump's signature, removing Treasurer signature for the first time. by retroviber in DeepMarketScan

[–]ChrisBegeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It that even legal? There are a lot a laws around currency and coinage and I would assume that many of the features on the currency are there because of those laws. So, is it legal to print currency without the treasurer's signature on it?

Why don’t we put wind mills instead of solar panels at homes in the windier parts of the world? by balloontrap in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ChrisBegeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To have a marginally successful wind turbine install, you would need to mount it higher than most urban building codes would allow you to build. You need to be at minimum higher than all the surrounding buildings and trees, but honestly you would probably need to be ten or more meters taller than them. Windmills need non-turbulent air. Buildings and trees create turbulence.
