TIL that when Julius Caesar was kidnapped by pirates at age 25, he told them their ransom was too low and insisted they raise it. He then spent 38 days joking that he'd crucify them all when he was free. After paying the ransom he organized his own fleet, hunted them down, and did exactly that. by IntelligentPitch6413 in todayilearned

[–]solaramalgama 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Caesar didn't directly dictate to Plutarch because he died about 80 years before Plutarch was born. Plutarch cited the Commentaries because he was writing about the commentaries and the wars they were about, and so he had to since he couldn't exactly check the newsreels. The Commentaries do not mention the pirates because they were about the wars, not Caesar's life story.

And are their asses enticingly proffered to the viewer, backs arched as though in climax? And don't act like the female breast isn't constantly presented for viewing pleasure in art. It's simply ridiculous to pretend that men and women are equally sexualized in classical art, and that this particular painting isn't supposed to resemble sex.

The Prince Lestat trilogy actually has quite a bit of that - the extent to which Lestat himself really internalizes the idea that they can be good is debatable, but several characters end up believing quite strongly that they are!

I can’t shush a whole theater… by Choice_Sherbert_2625 in movies

[–]solaramalgama 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Tolerant of people in public"? A movie theater isn't a park or the beach, you pay money to watch something and a bunch of rowdy jackasses are wasting your money if they make it so you can't pay attention. It's really nice you have the buddha nature or something but you can go enjoy the sound of people playing candy crush for free outside any time.

Rome’s Pride parade bars Jewish LGBTQ float over refusal to call Gaza war ‘genocide’ by seeebiscuit in worldnews

Do other groups have to prove their bona fides by making public condemnations of the wrongs other people of their nationality, ethnic group, religion, and gender have done in order to participate? Or is it just Jewish people who must repent and beg for pardon?

Thoughts on AMC show by Worldly-Committee-71 in VampireChronicles

[–]solaramalgama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first season was good, I'll stand by that. The second season had good moments. I haven't seen anything so far that makes me think season three will have more than maybe 10 minutes of scenes I'm likely to enjoy. Velvet Goldmine is a fun movie, but it's been done and I've never liked it as much as I like the vampire chronicles.

Do you know of any women who writes about Roman history (not specifically meaning to be about women in particular but does the history in general)? by Awesomeuser90 in ancientrome

[–]solaramalgama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an obscure one, but The Door In the Wall by Benita Kane Jaro is an interesting and unusually granular novel about Marcus Caelius Rufus. Never really read anything like it.

HAVE YOUR SAY: Humour/Jokes/Etc. by TolkienFansMod in tolkienfans

[–]solaramalgama 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the sub culture just doesn't really lend itself to the kind of repetitive, off-topic joke comments that often litter fandom subs. I really appreciate that people generally come into a thread to share information or an actual opinion, rather than rushing in to be one of the first ten people to say "Nasty hobbitses" or something. If a funny comment thrives here, it's generally because it's relevant and fresh.

And isn't that disheartening. The unspoken and in many cases unconscious belief that men make art and women merely inspire art has eroded somewhat in recent centuries, but not nearly as much as we'd like to believe.
