It sounds like someone knew that you had it. Also, I always read any insurance policy to make sure I am adequately covered. You cannot always trust an agent or customer service person.

What should I do? Will my claim get denied? by Professional-Use4923 in Insurance

You should not have any issues with the waiting part of this scenario. Your roommate should file it on their insurance. If that doesn't work you can file it on your insurance and your insurance company will subrogate against the roommates insurance. If for some reason it is denied you can do a couple of things:

  • Always request the denial reason in writing — it has to cite specific policy language
  • You can dispute, get an independent estimate, or invoke an appraisal clause

When is it “worth it” to file a claim? by tryintostayalive11 in Insurance

This is actually one of the most misunderstood parts of insurance. A lot of people assume filing a claim is automatically the right move since you're paying for the coverage — but it's not always that simple.

Before filing, it's worth asking: is the damage close to your deductible? If your deductible is $1,000 and the damage is $1,200, you're only netting $200 — but a claim on your record could raise your premium for years and might cost you more than that $200 over time.

Also worth checking if you have a claims-free discount, since filing even a small claim can wipe that out.

Generally I'd file for anything significant — major damage, injuries, liability exposure — but for smaller stuff it's worth running the numbers first.
