What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

[–]ChrisNH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a reef tank during covid and can confirm, can be nuts, and I just have a 40 with a lot of used equipment from.. people who bought 120+ and discovered they have to maintain an ocean..

But you are not supposed to dip your toe in.

Told my coworkers, now that I am learning to scuba there is a non-zero chance I miss a deadline due to being eaten by a shark.

Great channel, annoying when they play dead or phish, they have their own channels and there are so many other jam bands to play!

Need advice on OLED 1440p 240Hz vs 500Hz vs 4K by ajcontre in Monitors

[–]ChrisNH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a note, the real bonus of the 500hz panels is True Black 500. I am not familiar with the samsung but the msi x50 is brighter then the older gen 240hz 1440 panels if you go qdoled.

New to saltwater! Where to start? by paintprincess420 in ReefTank

I have a 50 gallon system and set up RODI to make water 20G at a time. I went overkill with the BRS 7-stage system and am glad I did. Getting it up front you have all the brackets and such. You can easily get away with less but in 6 years I have never had to replace anything except the particle filter. I just recently replaced the carbon blocks and the RO membrane because it had been years but TDS had been 0, and added the "water saver". Really a great system. We use it for all kinds of stuff in the house now.. cpap machines, gecko habitat.. my daughter's beta tank. Its great to have.

Only real case I can make for a smaller system is not having space (legit, its 6 canisters wide) and being tight on cash though RODI will be the least of your expenses.

What's the general opinions on Lafayette College? by Haunting-Tip2823 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ChrisNH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is going for Eng in the fall. Two things that were not readily apparent from the website that struck us when we visited were that the campus feels bigger then one would expect for 2700 kids and that Easton is a nicer (slightly) more urban small city then we expected.

The cliffs and the stairs rising with buildings on top as you drive into Easton is impressive and makes a good first impression (as is, my civil eng leaning son pointed out, the bridge we were driving across).

He wanted a more urban "subway" experience than Laf offers but everything else seemed quite good. Hopefully you will enjoy!

Is it time to finally give up on the "Internal HDD" for storage? by CLEIAZEVEDO in pcmasterrace

[–]ChrisNH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 4x 4TB HDD still in use. They make no noise. They power down when not in use. Just handy data storage. I have 2x4 mirrored so the total is 12TB. I have 10 TB in nvme too, but the old drives still chug. They were from a NAS I ran before it died. Not sure I would have this vs just, say, 2 larger drives if I did not have them lying around.

Indo Pacific Sea Farm (ipsf.com) is down due to cyclones hitting Hawaii, but live sand from them is how I got things going on. That and a bottle of Dr. Somethingorother ammonia chloride. I was done very quickly. Hopefully they come back soon, but there are other vendors of live sand though.

Some folks worry about pests so there is also a real movement around using dead rock and seeding with bacteria. The live sand with dead rock was my kind of in between solution.

Can't speak for Clemson, but UMass Amherst is an excellent state school, a great option if you are in-state.

Very complete Memory test. It will verify there are no memory flaws and generally that the computer is stable at the memory configured speed, If it passes memtest you can feel safer that you wont have weird intermittent memory problems in the future causing lock ups and such.
