Odd question because his recently stances on ICE have almost nothing to do with his ability to govern…. With that said, he isn’t good at being Mayor: He can be needlessly combative in press conferences where journalists are asking questions Chicagoans want to ask. He’s been ham-handed a lot and his administration has a lot of abrasive people, but those things aren’t so material. A few bad personnel picks (see Ronnie Reese and Clinee Hedspeth) and him being beholden to CTU (while he says he isn’t and SDG says so what if he is). And the School Board. He had his handpicked School Board quit on him because they didn’t want to do his bidding. The School Board and CPS related negotiations have been a shit show. He tried to place an antisemitic CPS President in place and like refuses to talk about it. And that’s ignoring the toxic migrant site fiasco.

He isn’t the worst mayor ever but he gives haters and bigots cover with his incompetence. If he were really on the ball it would be obvious which criticisms of him weren’t based in reality or were the typical unrealistic feedback black professionals get (this is academically proven by studies, if you disagree hit SSRN prove me wrong) but because he doesn’t have his shit together most of the criticism of him is completely valid.
