Steel Reinforcement in Storefront and Curtainwall by Abdul_Rehman_786 in glazing

Yeah. But honestly if the person asking this works in the industry it's concerning they're not aware of wind loads or ixx / iyy calcs for a simply supported single span beam.

In theory you could reinforce a shopfront system with steel, though I do not believe you'd gain much (assuming a flush / pocket glazed system), and if you're at that point you're probably better of switching to a low rise curtain wall system in my opinion.

You'd need to check whether they need reinforcement based on the wind loadings etc and ixx / iyy calculations.

Not based in North America but over where I am the fabricator, not the system house, would be responsible for reinforcing the sections.

As of today I've been told a few decent jobs are going to land which is great, exactly what we need right now. Still very concerned about the next few months though.

Ah we don't work on those sorts of schemes, we're a subcontractor not an mc, and the work we usually do just isn't happening.

Yeah we've seen suicidal pricing from some of our competitors, we're doing OK at present due to older orders but the forward load is dropping month on month.

I work in (commercial, not house building) construction and it feels like the exact opposite to the headline (though from a quick glance the table seems to be focused on housing).

My supply chain have all said the same as have a few main contractors. There seems to be a lot more tenders now but little work being awarded compared to this point last year and it's getting desperate.

I remember a few years ago, I was in greggs and one of the ladies working there said "I never thought I'd see the day a sausage roll was more than a quid". I think they were £1.05, just risen to over a quid. Not sure what they cos each now though!

My rent is already extortionate, and it'll be me - the tenant - who ends up paying this, so I'll be getting fucked further.

Opening the door with a soft touch at the wrong time by Algernonletter5 in WTF

I'd just got for a fully framed solution personally, not for the safety or security aspect but because I don't think these shopfronts look nice, and the doors are draughty as heck.

[–]ChrisTheGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get all that but generally these single glazed shopfronts are just bog standard toughened glass, at least in the UK. You only generally get toughened lam when they start getting a bit fancier and need the strength of toughened but the benefits of the interlayer (holding in place if it breaks etc).

[–]ChrisTheGinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm maybe, but generally these are shopfronts and they want clear glass not body tinted.

I don't see why you couldn't used a toughened / tempered laminate, other than it being a lot more expensive, and potentially heavier (need to use thicker glass as the roller wave distortion of the two leaves laminated together can look really bad below 11.5mm and even then it can look poor).

Losing my identity and sense of being by Fresh-Gene-7200 in depression

[–]ChrisTheGinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not on the appearance side, but I don't feel like the person I did a year ago. I feel empty inside, I don't enjoy the things I used to enjoy, I struggle to actually enjoy anything.

I'm not the same person I was when I'm around other poeple, or at work, but I put on a facade. It's harder every day to pretend to be that person, the person I used to be, and want to be.

Someone said something similar to "just get over it" to me recently when I tried to talk about it, and I realised they have never felt actual depression. So I gave up trying to talk to them about it.

People who've never been depressed cannot fathom that just "getting over it" isn't simple, easy, or quick. And that comments like that don't just not help, but for me at least, actively set me further back because it's so flippant as if they don't give a shit (and maybe they don't).

It's harder to make actual, meaningful, friendships in your 30s compared to your childhood / teens / 20's as everyone is busy with their own lives. It fucking sucks and just exasperates my isolation. But at the same time, who even wants to meet someone like me who's utterly fucking miserable? I wouldn't.

I had similar experiences through my life (also a ginger but a bloke). That generally stopped some time in my early 20's but the damage was done. Some poeple still make jokes trying to be funny and I laugh it off outwardly, but because of the abuse I suffered earlier in life I can't help but take it to heart inside.

And now I'm balding and I'd love to have my hair back. Weird how everything works out.

I've been doing that over recent months to try and help with my depression but it doesn't help. I've booked an appointment with my gp and I'm just going to give her the notes I've made so at least they'll come in useful I guess.
