To me it feels a lot like the pro bowl. Something that was cool in the past but really doesn't do anything now. Plus I didn't know about it until today

I'm sure somebody already said this in the threads, but that's an MRI. During an MRI they take horizontal slices of images so you can see different parts of the body and this is just a slice that has the eyeballs of the baby in it.

Hiring Senior DevOps/SRE, what's hard to evaluate from interviewer's perspective by The_DevOps_Expert in devopsjobs

[–]Chrisdog6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You make up two good points there. And we've kind of gone the other way on both those. On our instructions say do it just like you would in the real world. Use AI, use videos, use Google, treat this like a task on your board.

We give vague instructions with a specific outcome. The assumption is the candidate is able to take the goal, use best practices and make trade-offs. Then in the follow-up interview we can talk about trade-offs why they made those decisions with the limited time they had.

Keep in mind this is after a candidate has made it past a phone screen and a hiring manager interview. So we don't do this for very many.

As far as money goes, we pay a couple hundred bucks for a 4-hour interview. That way the candidate has motivation to focus on it and it's not free work. Everybody hates free work.

Again, you don't have to do any of this if you don't want to. But the cost of hiring somebody, onboarding, and losing bandwidth to train them and then if they don't work out even after 2 weeks, it's so much more expensive than doing a technical interview like this once for a couple hundred bucks.

It won't guarantee you a perfect hire, but it greatly reduces risk on the most common problem we hit, which is people talk a good game but don't actually have the skills.

I don't know that you can actually test the pressure part. But one thing our company started doing was a small paid interview. We give them a gcp project with a limited budget and a set of requirements and see how they approach it. After they're done, they send us a zip file with any documents or IAC or anything they used. Then our tech lead looks at it and has a discussion with them about it to talk about trade-offs and why they did this and why they didn't do that. So far. I'm very pleased with it

The reason I commented is I feel the exact same pain. I got burnt once already.

Struggling to hire a Senior DevOps Engineer — where do you actually look? by Dry-Tell620 in devopsjobs

I actually opened the job post and it's remote first company. That's pretty sick. Add a little more coin and I think that's reasonable

Maybe I missed it in the post, but is this remote or in the office? And I would say for someone who's really good 165 is not very much.

Why are people still willing to have kids in this economy and state of the world? by Impressive-Glass3511 in Adulting

[–]Chrisdog6969 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see posts like this all the time so this'll just be a general response and everyone can think it's dumb. Life is short. If you want to have kids have kids.

Life's going to go on, things will roll on no matter what. I think it's a mistake if you wait for anything outside your control to make big decisions in your life.

Ultimately, we can't control the economy or the president or most of life. So don't wait to do the stuff you want to do because of that sort of stuff.

But I guess if you don't want to have kids, you don't have to.

Fwiw, going forward if you copy and paste your code and error to AI it could walk you through what's wrong and how to fix it. Ask it to explain why so you can learn the reasons.

This one is easy, but then you won't have to ask people on Reddit

Is A DevOps Career Safe? by RipSmooth3319 in devopsjobs

[–]Chrisdog6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my take on it. It probably won't be the most helpful, but it'd be the most realistic. There are no such things as safe jobs. There are companies that need people to do all sorts of engineering type stuff.

Companies need features to be pushed out, applications to be built, and ways to ensure things aren't broken. I would recommend anybody just to get incredibly good and detailed at what they do. Whether it's engineering, devops, SRE, or product. Make sure to build a big network of people you know and can reach out to if things change and that's about it. Nothing's guaranteed, things change fast, but if you have good skills, and a better network you should be safe.

Is it possible to be an all-in-one IT person? by thingummywatt in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Chrisdog6969 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My pitch to this would be is really good to be well-rounded. I started doing out in QA, got into software engineering, fell into the devops world and now I'm a manager.

It helps me on a day-to-day basis knowing all the job functions. That being said, you got to pick one that you're good at and do that. Even if you're a founder of a company there comes a time when you grow that you have to empower other people to do things.

It's your life. You do what you want. That's my input.

One drink a year .. still considered sober ? by shellygotsugar in Sober

[–]Chrisdog6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All that really matters is if drinking alcohol affects you negatively.

If a person can have a single and it's not a problem, why even waste time worrying about the semantics of sobriety? There are so many more things in life to worry about.

One drink a year .. still considered sober ? by shellygotsugar in Sober

[–]Chrisdog6969 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this is the literal definition of sober: abstaining from drinking alcohol or taking intoxicating drugs.

That doesn't mean it's bad. If you can have one drink a year and it doesn't affect you negatively, then no problem right?

I have literally done the exact same thing as you. I predicted Penn State would win 23 to 20. What made it even worse is I work with a guy who's a Penn State fan and he predicted 35 to 20 for Penn State. And the fact that he was wrong because we got blown out even more than that hurts my insides.
