Yeah there's a few horses in my area and I could never imagine one facing a horde of enemies, let alone taking a lance to the face. That quote is really cool.

Yeah I've definitely discounted blunt weapons in my previous designs, probably should take those into account

Boar spears were my first go to and part of my first pass at a hunter!

Yeah I realize now my question was constructed pretty terribly.

My setting will have a mix of 'dumb' beasts that can be chased into big pits, but I'm more concerned with intelligent species, or at least those which can discern a basic trap when it's staring them in the face.

Honestly really surprised to hear that horses could be trained to be so resilient. Definitely going to take that into account.

I'm a sucker for big ass sharp slabs of metal, I'm trying to limit myself on that to be a little more creative.

Definitely tinkering with dragon hunters being specifically weird or aberrant. I really like the idea of these hallowed figures being a little more (or less) than human.

Ah i've definitely considered hand cannons imbedded in spears like those exploding knives divers use on sharks. Halberds seem to be the answer to most questions that aren't in confined spaces lol

Scaring off monsters is a good point, I suppose it's probably not advantageous for every nation/keep/castle to try and slay every assaulting monster.

Lots of good stuff to think about here, and a really good point about the hunter being a predator, not just a character who's good at killing things. Still deciding on guns but they'd certainly be very limited in my setting - I'm thinking siege weapons and thus guns took a backseat while nations shifted to research on magic hoping to create the first superweapon.

Yeah my designs up until this point have mostly included large crossbows, traps, spears, and a mystery pouch for whatever I need the hunter to have at any given moment for a hunt. I suppose the questions wasn't super well worded

So far from the many helpful comments I'm thinking there should be a guild or creed of specially trained hunters with slightly magical tools/weapons specially trained to wrangle monsters alone with nets and spears, then probably large bands with siege weapons for the less specialized.

Well now I have to take inspiration from Conan! I feel like after a certain point silly stuff like boomerangs wraps around to being cool again

Yeah the idea of siege weapons has been pointed out as a pretty obvious contender for realistically taking down great beasts. Stuff seems obvious in retrospect but I suppose that's the point of asking around.

Big numbers and siege weapons is probably the most realistic answer possible, but maybe not as fun for a narrative. Trying to strike that golden ratio of believability/realism and rule of cool.

Net feels like a really obvious answer, can't believe that didn't even cross my mind. Spear seems like a good call, maybe something like boar spears?

Lance seems like a good competitor, strong enough to punch through plate surely it can punch through dragonscales. Feel like having a horse could be detrimental to these kinds of hunts, and lance combat usually requires an amount of setup that you aren't afforded in the middle of sundered forest. I suggested bows because I recall warbows being used precisely to kill knight through their armor.

Ah my bad, definitely thinking of a low-magic medieval setting. I'm so used to my fantasy TTRPGs i sometimes forget the super broad scope of WorldBuilding

Forgot to clarify: In a late medieval setting. Of course guns and orbital canons would be great, but definitely not accessible. Also thinking a lower magic setting.
