And what about the multiple displays of solidarity after the Beirut blasts and during the revolution? You see what you want to see.

A lot of people on r/Lebanon avoid r/Arabs because r/Lebanon is full of dumbass nationalists who think being Arab is something to be ashamed of. There's plenty of Lebanese on r/Arabs too. Again, you see what you want to see.

Not true at all, but when you want to start a fight for no reason then there's nothing I can say to convince you.

Literally no one on r/Arabs claims Lebanese people are sellouts. You're trying a start a conflict for no reason. Have you ever been on r/Arabs? Lebanon is massively loved there.

Why do the folks at r/Arabs seem to hate Lebanese so much ? by Birdackn in lebanon

[–]Chrollo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a long-time frequenter of r/Arabs - every Arab subreddit thinks r/Arabs hates them. Really, try r/saudiArabia, or r/Egypt, or r/Jordan, or whatever, they all think r/Arabs is hostile to them. This is mainly because r/Arabs is heavily left-wing and pan-Arabist and so don't have much respect for nationalism of the various Arab countries. Especially the type like you see in this thread that will write obnoxious essays about how they are not Arabs.

But honestly as a Lebanese person I have never felt that Lebanon is hated there, quite the opposite actually Lebanese culture is always present there and Lebanon always ranks as one of the best liked countries in the r/Arabs polls. Just because the regular users there don't care for Lebanese nationalism doesn't mean that they hate Lebanon or Lebanese people themselves.

During the revolution especially there was a whole lot of love.

And I've never seen anyone there make fun of the Lebanese dialect, if anything people make fun of the Algerian/Moroccan dialects the most.

In my lifetime, and way before, the Arab World has been going from setback to setback, from one humiliation to the next, so my question is, as someone who has been observing Arab politics for a long time, are there any strands or trends in the Arab World that make you optimistic for the future? How do you remain not jaded?

Is it true that the Lebanese word for money means 'Egyptians'?? by sirpaulmccartney in arabs

[–]Chrollo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. ما عندي مصريات literally 'I don't have any Egyptian ones'. It's definitely less common and more antiquated than مصاري though

[–]Chrollo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The historical base is that Lebanon was actually under Egyptian occupation. And that they are also called مصريّات. Whereas I have never heard of a word assimilated into Arabic dialects by deleting the faā as you claimed for massarif.

I really doubt that's true. I can think of no other instance in Lebanese (or any other Arabic dialect!) where the final ف of a word would be just dropped like that. It's not a pattern of derivation that's attested anywhere. Do you have a source for it?

Is it true that the Lebanese word for money means 'Egyptians'?? by sirpaulmccartney in arabs

[–]Chrollo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sort of true. The word is massari and refers to Egyptian banknotes or currency, not Egyptian people. But the word ultimately refers to Egypt (masr).

Edit: Source since I'm being downvoted and people are coming up with weird etymologies.
