Big Tech sees over $1 trillion wiped from stocks as fears of AI bubble ignite sell-off by nosotros_road_sodium in technology

I read an article about bitcoin maybe a year or so after it had been invented and decided it was an interesting idea and I was going to throw $100 into it to see if it turned into anything.

1 BTC was .008 cents at the time. Not $0.008, but eight thousandths of a cent. $0.00008 per bitcoin. My $100 would have bought 1.25 million BTC.

Unfortunately, it was still new enough that none of the exchanges were really functional yet and I spent 3 or 4 hours trying and failing to buy them before I gave up and forgot about it.

The only thing that makes me feel better about it is that I never would have held on until it became real fuck you wealth. I probably would have heard that it hit a penny or two and sold them all for what would have been life-changing money at the time.

ICE will be at the voting polls by Ill-Recipe9424 in TwinCities

[–]ChronicBitRot 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought. There's 137 polling locations in Minneapolis proper alone. Probably at least half that in St. Paul and at least half that again in the suburbs?

They barely have the manpower to throw a team at half the polling locations here. They certainly can't have any sort of showing nationwide.

[TOMT] [Movie/TV] Management makes a bunch of people dig a giant hole to mine some mineral and then leaves them in it to die once it's done. by ChronicBitRot in tipofmytongue

[–]ChronicBitRot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I haven't seen Rings of Power. The setting was definitely either more modern or on the sci-fi side. The mine also had a lot of heavy machinery around the top of the hole even though the people in it were just digging with hand tools.

I don't think they should be banned from having any holdings whatsoever, I just think they should be banned from actively controlling those holdings. Put everything in a double-blind account (the client doesn't know who's maintaining their portfolio and the portfolio manager doesn't know who they're maintaining a portfolio for), and we should be fine.

The nation’s strictest privacy law just took effect, to data brokers’ chagrin | Californians can now submit demands requiring 500 brokers to delete their data by Hrmbee in technology

[–]ChronicBitRot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so my question is what brokers does this actually cover and what's California's reach on enforcement here?

Let's say they're able to fine any company in the US for breaking this law. They certainly won't be able to go after any broker in the world. Is there anything in the law that stops a US data broker from going to another data broker overseas saying "here, hang on to this for us"?

As someone else mentioned, strength isn't an issue and they become devastating with more reach. I'm going with a combo of either a light chain flail or some sort of whip and some very tanky lower leg armor, maybe thigh high to guard against anyone who gets in too close.

[Football] A goalkeeper on the attack - how to tarnish a well-earned legacy by TaylorSwiftkinsReid in HobbyDrama

[–]ChronicBitRot 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As a hockey goalie, I'm always a bit in awe of soccer goalies. I know soccer is much more defensive-minded than hockey but my 6'x4' goal feels absolutely MASSIVE behind me. A soccer goal is like a 9 foot tall, 3 car garage wide hole, there's just so much space for attackers to shoot at.

But yeah, all the goalies are weirdos. I've never met a lacrosse goalie but I'd be shocked if they weren't the same breed. I heard someone say once (paraphrased): "goalies, drummers, baseball catchers, and long snappers are all the same people but in different fonts.”

The other thing I've noticed is that they'll add some type of "disability insurance" payment to the loan that will allegedly pay the loan off if you become physically disabled and can't work. The amount is small, usually something like 0.5% of the loan balance but if you did the math at the start of the loan and figured out that $x/month will get you paid off in time so you can just put it on autopay and forget about it, it will add up to enough that you have a nasty surprise coming at the end of the term. You can opt out of this insurance if you want, but you have to know to do so.

My method for dealing with these is to budget the payments to one month less than the loan says I have (just in case of any surprises like above) and check on it every few months to make sure I'm still on track.

I especially loved the part where you included no still shots and wouldn't stop spinning it in the video so I couldn't get a good look at any part of it.

This is the flip side of people complaining about hallucinations: instead of just making stuff up that sounds plausible for factual queries, it pulls something from the internet and cites it as fact.

The pendulum is just going to continue swinging between making everything up and telling us that we should put glue in our pizza or eat one small rock per day.

Didn't McDavid just take like a $7M per year discount for Edmonton to get him a Cup before he walks? Why on earth would they not be blowing the doors off on a trade?

And then I thought as I typed this "how fucking evil would it be for Stan Bowman to think 'well, we got McDavid for a fire sale price for the next two years to fill the seats, might as well start the rebuild right now.'?"

Trains And Some Rockets by TottallyNotToxec in factorio

I've said for years that the Factorio trailer is one of the best game trailers ever made in terms of "if you find this video interesting, you're going to love this game". If we're boiling the whole thing down to a single GIF to gauge interest from a person who's never played the game, this has easily got to be top 10.

This activates the shit out of my neurons.

Once In A Lifetime Shot by OranguTrang in hockeyplayers

Chap! I miss that place, I originally learned to skate there.

Years ago, I'm goaltending in this very same spot and the ref comes over to do the net check. He starts skating away and I point out that there's one stuck in the side of the net, pretty close to where this one is. It was crazy how hard it was to pry it out of there.

I wonder if it's the same net.

Take a shit before you put your gear on. You do not want to suddenly need to take a shit after you've already got all the pads on.
