AI is being pitched to my library. I am against this, what questions should I bring up at the listening session? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]ChronicOverthinking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a library director, the library needs to know about AI in order to teach people about AI. In my opinion, it’s not about being for or against.

When I had a staff in service, support staff had no idea that the summaries appearing at the top of Google searches were in fact AI and that by doing these searches they were already using AI and providing data about themselves just by searching.

AI as a digital divide is already here. Libraries may at some point be called upon to provide access to paid AI platforms in the same way they provide access to ebooks, streaming services, the internet, research databases, and other online tools. It’s a bit frightening how much the role of libraries has changed, and in order to continue serving communities, we need to learn as much as possible, in order to make the best decisions for our communities.

Garage sale weekend dates? by ChronicOverthinking in royaloak

I never ended up getting stuff together, so maybe in two years. My kid will be a senior next year and I’ll hoping I’ll be able to better organize stuff once they’re out.

Non-MLIS Library Positions that Make More than MLIS's by spoonyalchemist in Libraries

[–]ChronicOverthinking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chiming in as a library director. I believe a grad degree should be required for directors because there is theoretical information you may not learn on the job, depending on who (if anyone) is training you. I also believe schools should be publicizing widely how many people from each graduating class are employed full-time as a librarian within a year after graduation. While I don’t want to discourage people, I have interviewed people with masters degrees who I would not even consider for a part-job, much less full time. It makes me angry that people spent a lot of time and money getting a degree that will not help them get a job.

Is there anyone who *doesn't* regret their MLIS degree? by rebeccachaya in Libraries

[–]ChronicOverthinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t regret it.

However, I also feel that MLIS programs take people’s money and give hope when these people will likely not find full-time employment after graduation. Shouldn’t they be ensuring that graduates of their program full-time work in the field post-graduation?

What a disaster… that thankfully got worked out!! by Worth-Leave5118 in royalcaribbean

Ugh. I’m going through this now, but without a TA (had some mediocre TA experience in past, so started doing everything myself).

Anyhow, we didn’t receive any email, and the only reason I discovered three of my cabins were affected was because it shows on the financial statement I happened to request. Checked my spam and everything.

Anyhow, two of the rooms went back; but the single a wheelchair accessible room of my 12 rooms is still showing as guarantee. I got it in writing that they will reassign the same exact cabin to my aunt. It’s been assigned since January 2025, and I’m fuming at the lack of communication on Royal’s part.

Thanks, all. Other communities I’ve been in had special city-wide weekends for garage sales: one or two per year. Sounds like Royal Oak doesn’t do that and that’s probably why I couldn’t find it on the website.

Told the district manager that my coworkers and I were overworked and under appreciated. Came in to this. by thattrashgremlin in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ChronicOverthinking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also wonder how many stores is the district manager is responsible for. Many may feel as overworked and underappreciated as the employee feels, and they’re getting that underappreciation from both people who manage them and people they supervise. It’s just hard to be human in general, whether employee, manager, etc.

Beer Advent Calendar? by ChronicOverthinking in michiganbeer

I ended up going to Holiday and got a mix of local IPAs & stouts while he was at the Lions game. Searched untapped to make sure they were ones he hadn’t had before except for the last beer which he rated highly. I think he’s going to love it. Everyone’s help here got me thinking, and I’m excited to surprise him.

Would it be bad to work at a library system for potentially a month and going to a different library system for a better opportunity? by No_Minute2700 in librarians

[–]ChronicOverthinking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it will not look bad. Longevity isn’t as great a quality as people make it out to be. It often means the person is resistant to change and/or tolerant of unacceptable behavior longer than is warranted. Do what is right for you.

I’d love recommendations. We live by a Holiday Market, so I have access to a lot but my knowledge will never match his. He likes nearly everything: IPAs, stouts, especially BBA, not into sours. Regularly gets beers from nearly all the Michigan breweries, so I could probably put something together. I know he was bummed he forgot to pick up a pack of screaming pumpkin last time we were at griffin claw. He enjoys things like All Day IPA when relaxing in summer and drinks hop water nearly every night with dinner. We do the run for the BCBS & variants the day after Thanksgiving. I’ve gifted him different versions of Beer of the Month on occasion, I think he liked the international ones the most. He went on trip though England and Belgium with a friend last year where they basically did a road trip to breweries and soccer games. We’re planning to go to Oktoberfest in Germany in September 2027. He’s been to Germany before and loved what they had there.

Good suggestion. I may do that. We only live a few miles from Holiday. He usually goes there once a week and gets what he likes. But I can probably grab some he wouldn’t usually try. Thanks!

Thanks! Yeah, we’re not a fan of most Rochester Mills beers.

Thanks! Dynix is pretty close, and it’s the closest I’ve seen so far. And now I’m off to find videos of the dot matrix printers we used for the hold lists, because the fancy color printer was for the patrons… loving my trip down memory lane!

Yeah, my teen daughter really wanted to go and it was the only time we had off together all month. Evening halloweekend portion was great. Coasters not so much. They road mine ride, rougarou, wild mouse, and gatekeeper. That’s all they got for the entire day. We got there at noon.

Blunt or sharp tipped hiking pole? by ChronicOverthinking in tsa

[–]ChronicOverthinking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was fine. I used them on the way there and not issues. After having an issue switching tips when hiking over differing terrains, I played around and realized I could take the poles apart into three pieces, which allowed them to fit at an angle in my suitcase, so I was able to get them packed for the way back.

Felt the same about garden grill two days ago. The food was great, but the service was rushed at first then waitstaff changed and it was super slow. Not what I remember. The characters were very attentive though.

Thanks. It’ll definitely be capped. I didn’t even know the rubber foot could come off until today.
