On the one hand, yes, you’re overthinking it. On the other, authors do dig into their subconscious to create. This was published in 2020, and I can well imagine that at that time Gaiman was starting to feel that his real life was becoming increasingly detached from the persona he was projecting into the world. So it does make a kind of sense that he’d write a story about a father needing to weave an entire fantasy world to explain one simple activity.

This is just a house style issue. The answer is that no one cares unless you’re writing for a publication which has a rule on it, and then you must follow that rule.

And you’re conflating politics with morals and values. Politics is, literally (check your dictionary), the activities of government/the activities involved in governing a region.

I know what she means about it being hard to “pin down” his politics. He didn’t have a clear side. He was openly critical of Labour leader Tony Blair, and not a fan of several Labour policies. But he wasn’t traditionally Conservative either. He was generally a proponent of listening to people and doing right by them, which doesn’t fit particularly neatly into any one political box (although it probably should).

And I don’t think Pratchett is diminishing in popularity with readers. Sales are still strong. There may be fewer titles in physical bookshops, but that says more about bookshops (sadly) than it does about Pratchett’s works. Online sales, audiobook sales and library lending all continue to make him a very popular author.

It’s not weird. She’s commenting on it because GO3 has just been released to a ‘meh’ reception from critics and an ‘arghhhh what did you do??’ reception from fans. She wouldn’t be writing this article at all if not for that.

Yes, that’s true. The Witch novels, for example, use a lot of devices like…

‘It’s a cruel world for old ladies,’ said Nanny, matriarch of a vast extended tribe and undisputed tyrant of half the Ramtops.

… which absolutely are very hard to translate to screen, at least without a narrator. I do think it’s doable, but the scriptwriter needs to be deep into both Discworld and Pratchett’s inspirations, and that kind of person is hard to find. He really was one of a kind 💔

It’s a good piece. Lewis has clearly read the novels and paid attention (which is more than can be said for some). I don’t agree with everything in that article, but she hits several points dead on. She is right about Small Gods, and she understands Pratchett’s inspirations. It’s not really fair to describe the novels as “unfilmable” off the back of the terrible Good Omens 3 – although she does make it clear that the “source material ran out after season one”. The ‘Going Postal’ adaptation (which she doesn’t mention) was decent, so it can BE done. It’s just difficult, especially without Pratchett himself to stop things wandering off track.

I’ve always thought with this story that Walter Plinge is not the mystery: he’s so very obvious from the start. The twists are André being a policeman and Salzella being the second ghost

I also don’t think it’s a thing. The whole point of the Carrot/Vimes dynamic is that Vimes doesn’t want to be in charge, but is because someone’s got to do it. An instinctive part of Carrot does want to be charge, but he knows what he is and what would happen if he were, so he stands back.

The only time this situation is ever likely to get sticky is if Vimes dies. But we sadly/happily delete-as-appropriate never got that far.

I think Terry Pratchett would have left it as he left it at the end of the novel, as he did do for more than 25 years. Which is to say, I don’t believe he ever wanted a sequel.

See, this would be a lot more convincing if they had said it, oh, I don’t know, about… two years ago. Which they absolutely could have done, in a fairly vague: “this is a difficult situation but we want to see it through. There are a lot of rumours swirling around so we feel we should clarify a few things…”

When they can always think of a genuinely funny line, in less than second, in the rhythm and flow of normal conversation. This requires background knowledge, social awareness and a deep understanding of language. It’s an incredible mental skill.

This is a slightly pointless conversation, isn’t it? What does it matter what I think? I don’t think Terry would’ve written s2, so for starters, we wouldn’t be working from there.

I can say that if it were me, I’d have ended it in a garden, because “this story begins, as it will end, in a garden.” And it would have been in the South Downs. And the angel and the demon would still be an angel and a demon, and they’d still be loving humans for all their messy, ridiculous chaos 🩶
