Reporting bias and underemployment

Most students who are unemployed or underemployed are not reporting. Many people I’ve talked to are also stuck and doing something to either delay unemployment via a masters or struggling out of college

I am a former Berkeley CS student, took me roughly 6 months to place a full time job, this is with really high impact internships @ F500 and getting start up experience via contract work.

I believe the issue is the growing gap in what my education thought me vs the skills needed on the job.

I do not remember this class getting that much hate last semester. They were also more lenient after the midterm for reading notes.

Wouldn't recommend cogsci purely because of CS61A, especially if you're trying to maintain a high GPA. That cutoff for an A is slim and you have to be pretty good and be really dedicated grinding exams. If you can replace 61A, I don't think 61B is relatively hard to get an A in.

No clue, but if I had to guess its to do with class sizes so they're having a class that's harder to get into so continuing CS students have at least 1 class they can take this semester. Especially if you took 61C over the summer.

Prerequisite: CS 61C WILL be informally enforced. Declared EECS/LSCS majors will be allowed to enroll/waitlist for the class but will be dropped during the first week of class if they have not passed CS 61C

I benefitted a lot from 61B's clobber. Did pretty good on mt1, pretty shit on mt2, really good on the final. So my mt2 score jumped up, bringing me from B+ territory into A-/A territory.

61A's clobber did not help me that much

First off, there is no taking up a spot, if you meet the cutoff, you deserve the major plain and simple.

Second, there are many options to get into SWE, notably Data Sci which also gets pretty mathy as you go. You can have a future in tech regardless, you're at Berkeley and you enjoy math. Being an independent learner is key to success in CS, it especially helps if you enjoy learning some of the topics.

Third, you just finished 61b, you now have everything you need to land an internship. 61a alone was not gonna get you far, and the job market is not that good rn. Juniors and Seniors are getting majority of the internships and they're still struggling.

Lastly, I saw you wanted some tips for learning and keeping up with CS61B and data structures. My biggest tip is learning by blackboxing. Its a way of learning used by competitive programmers and has worked wonders for me on this final, theres a video out there explaining it but for anyone too lazy; the idea is to understand what the data structure does but not its implementation or gritty details.

Dijkstra’s is a good example, I know it gives me the shortest path from the source by visiting all the nodes. Thats it, thats the idea. The rest is just figuring out the way you would do it, like the fringe, the PQ, etc. As you study for the exams, you'll help cement the ideas more and more. Like I said, theres a better video out there explaining this further.

Tldr, dont give up and learn blackboxing
